Horns Watching in NYC
Any of the NYC Horns out there have a good spot to watch the games? With the big one coming next Monday, trying to figure out the best place. Both for hoops and for football in the fall. I know Stout seems to be the spot where a lot of fans congregate, but want to make sure I'm not missing the true oasis in the concrete. Hook 'em

the back page on the UES
is pretty popular for games. i like it more than stout. they usually have the game on a projector with the sound, etc. or at least they did wehn Duke demolished texas a few years ago in the "black jersey" game. that was fun.
My favorite place for college football is Proof on 19th and 3rd, but I'm not sure that they still have a deal with the texas exes and i never saw a b-ball game there.

Ugh
I remember going to the game at the Meadowlands that day and being really psyched when the Horns came out in the 100th anniversary black jerseys (why black?). I was thinking to myself: if PJ and Lamarcus can control Williams on the boards, and Gibson and Paulino can neutralize Reddick with some points and some D, there's no reason why we shouldn't win and be the #1 team in the land. It was clear after about 20 minutes real time that we never showed up and were in for a long one.
Just when it was getting ugly, VY appears, in town for the Heisman ceremony that night, sporting a burnt orange #2 PJ jersey, and all the Texas fans in the crowd go crazy bananas. Just apeshit. Like he had the anecdote and only we knew it (we were outnumbered about 7 to 1). Everyone's fired up enough to where we think that we might jut hit a few 3s and go on a run, and take this game like VY was taking the Heisman that night.
At that point, Reddick goes berserck and basically puts the game away in the first half, as the Duke nerds start chanting "Reg-gie Bu-sh." Fucking nerds. All of them. Man we got destroyed that day, and then Bush won the Heisman.
It's time likes these where I put the 2006 Rose Bowl DVD in and get chills watching.

Ugh II
I was at that miserable game, too. I remember the feeling on both sides that Texas was a mere pretender, a football school in basketball clothing. A Duke fan passing me by after the game said, "Well at least you're good at football." Thank God for the Rose Bowl a few weeks later.

On the west side
There's a gay sports bar in Chelsea called Gym Bar (8th Avenue between 18 & 19) that has half a dozen screens around the place showing a variety of stuff. Unless there's a New York team playing, the crowd usually doesn't care what's on. I've always found the bartenders amenable to tuning in to whatever I've wanted to see. I've watched baseball and basketball there, never football. Not a lot of seating, but you can usually find a decent perch somewhere.
