Big 12 Coach of the Year
Yes, our own Rick Barnes, was awarded his third Big 12 Coach of the Year award from the same members of the media who vilified him last year.
On a side note, six basketball players were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team.
First Team:
Connor Atchley
D.J. Augustin
Damion James
Dexter Pittman
Second Time:
Justin Mason
Ian Mooney
Damn, it feels good to be a Longhorn!

This isn't entirely relevant but I was wondering
What is Barnes going to do with Harrison Smith? Like Mooney and Lewis, he only received token PT. Is he a scholarship player? Wasn't he recruited? Or is he more or a 'project'? If anyone could enlighten me, it'd be much appreciated.
Anyway Congrats Barnes! I love his player development! Big XII champs

AW says
that basically we're going to ask him to transfer, so that we can make room for another recruit.
Smith appears to be a volume scorer, and so he's not a good fit on this team. He's better off going to a smaller school or a school that's completely rebuilding and lost most of its players. That's where he can shine.

Curious to know...
what is meant by "volume scorer," and how is it a bad thing?

Volume scorers
Score a lot of points, but not real efficiently. For a balanced team, volume scorers are not a good fit.

AW Here
I'm don't think that Barnes will directly ask Smith to transfer. I do think that Harrison will be able to see the writing on the wall, the same way that we do.
If DJ stays, he'll be behind Augustin, Abrams, Mason, Balbay, and J'Covan Brown. That is not a good position. And even if DJ leaves, it's still hard to see him earning any significant playing time.
I will say that the '09 class is going to be one of the best in the country, and it sure would be nice to have another scholarship to offer.

I'm surprised
That Barnes won it over Scott Drew, but I'll take it! I guess the national opinion is that Barnes did an amazing job given that Durant went pro.
But even before the season, I knew we'd be better than last year because all our remaining freshman gained a valuable year of experience. I knew James would become a bigger force, and I knew Augustin was special.
Then again, I didn't expect to beat KU and to beat 2 other top 10 teams in non-conference. Also didn't expect to go 13-3 and get a 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament. That's probably why he won it. Still an amazing job, and he's the best coach in the Big XII IMO.

Just to chart...
Team Conf W-L #Academics #Starters
UT 13-3 6 4
KU 13-3 3 1
KSU 10-6 1 1
BU 9-7 1 1
OU 9-7 2 2
aTm 8-8 1 0
NU 7-9 1 0
OSU 7-9 0 0
TTU 7-9 1 0
MU 6-10 1 1
ISU 4-12 2 0
CU 3-13 0 0
Oh well, chart looks like crap, but the basic idea is, we rule, on and off the court. This kind of thing is exceptional to see from the program. Not only do we have the most overall academically recognized players, 4 out of our 5 starters are recognized (Come on DamJam!).
