Following the squirrel's lead

As noted in the diary by eddiethealbinosquirrel (What kind of fan are you?) I was thinking along the same lines as it relates to professional sports.

Star-divide

Thus, a poll of my own to find out how you decide to cheer for the professional team(s) you do.  Obviously the reasons may vary depending upon the sport, so we'll stick to football for now, as I believe it's the most widely followed.

Poll
How did you decide to follow the NFL team you call your own?
Regional (follow the closest team within a few hundred miles)
14 votes
Some other reason not listed
15 votes
Hometown Heroes (live or lived in the city or very close by)
80 votes
Rivals (cheer for the team that hates the team you do)
1 votes
Players (cheer for certain players, to hell with the teams)
51 votes
Uniforms (dig the unis and thus, the team)
3 votes
Style of Play (love the schemes and sets used)
2 votes
Coaches (following the leader of the team)

My dad was a huge Cowboy fan so it's kinda what I grew to know and enjoy.  Separate me from that and it's more "Follow the players, screw the teams."  I'm not big on pro sports because college has so much more passion.

This won't go over well with most Texas folk ...

... but I hate the Cowboys. It all goes back to the Jerry Jones firing Tom Landry on the radio debacle. Jerry turns my stomach, for many reasons.

Anyway, I voted "follow the players," because Vince has turned me into a Titans fan. At this point, I'd follow VY anywhere, in fandom terms.

Beyond that, I'll cheer for whoever is playing the 'Boys.

I refused to name my children Vince, Kevin or Major ... despite my secret desire to do so.

I would wager

Nearly as many Texas folk hate the Cowboys as love them.  Just listen to Houston Radio for a day, and count the number of specific instances of Cowboy hate.

Im with GoHorns though, I love my Longhorns.  Pro Teams theres just not the same sense of ownership.  Players leave for other teams, coaches get fired, hell even teams move around to different cities on occasion.

All of that goes toward the notion that the same passion for the team isnt shared.  In the pros, who knows if you are going to play in the same place, but in college, you only have one school.

At least rooting for college sports I know they will always be there, and their players wont ever play for another team in the same league.  Coaches and ADs may change, but its a big difference from the pros.

That went over just fine...

How can anyone here cheer for the team that paid Switzer?

Disclaimer: I may be wrong.

I've always wondered

what Longhorn/Cowboys fans felt about that.

I intensely dislike the Cowboys, so when they traded Jimmy for Barry, it seemed to me that the axis of evil was appropriately coming into line. But looking back on it, it must have been cause for some serious soul-searching among many of Texas' more passionate citizens.

I knew Landry was

past his prime. I hated Jones and Jimmy until the 2nd SB win, then I just "Disliked" Jones, but started liking Jimmy. I've been around awhile, saw the very 1st NO Saints game in Tulane Stadium when I lived in Algiers,LA. They still have a little tug on me to this day.

I've grown to dislike the Pro Game over the last few years. Someone else has already said it in this diary that players change teams, teams change cities, I think I'll stick to watchin College Ball and enjoy the rest of my life. I like the complete feel of College Ball.

I will watch a "TITAN" game, as long as VY is there.....

"Nobody leaves this field until we beat the hell out of them".................... L.J."Louis"Jordan in 1913 before kickoff of the Texas/ou game.

Really?

I grew up in Algiers... good times.

I've always

rooted for the Seahawks since I was a kid.  I liked them because they always lost and their uni's were so awful that they were awesome!  Plus, Steve Largent, cmon!

Then it got even better when I was stationed in Alabama because a guy I became friends and worked with played football in Alabama and was friends with Shaun Alexander.  So when Shaun came to Alabama to visit, the guy set up a lunch with him and I went, and Shaun ended up being one of the nicest people I have ever met.

I'm like bambi's mom, I take care of you guys!

I'm with Eddie on this one. I hate the Cowboys even though my father's a life-long fan. I'm an Atlanta Falcons fan (insert jokes and pity here) and have been since the early 80's. My affection for this team started because I liked the quarterback at the time, Steve Bartkowski, and grew once Jerry Glanville and Deion Sanders arrived much later.

It's been mostly disappointment following this team but it has made the brief moments of glory more enjoyable than you can ever imagine(beating the 15-1 Vikes only to get blasted in Super Bowl XXXIII by the Broncos and being the first team to beat the Packers on their home turf in the playoffs).

As my screen name implies

I'm a huge Saints fan.  And there would be no reason to root for them other than growing up in New Orleans (unless you really enjoy having your spirit crushed).  I also hate the cowboys, although that hatred has dimmed a little bit as I've gotten older.  I'm not ashamed to admit that the source of the hatred was mostly bitterness and jealousy stemming from the fact that the Saints mostly sucked while the cowboys were always good.  I had lots of relatives in Texas and so I had to hear about how great the cowboys were in the 70s and 80s, so I developed a natural aversion to them.

Born and raised in Houston

so I hate the cowboys (actually, this didn't happen until I went to UT and a lot of my good friends were obnoxious Cowgirls fans).  When I was in college and Houston lost the Oilers, I rooted for my roommate's Bills.  Gotta say, it's tough being a diehard Texans fan in DC, but I love rooting for a team through the bad times that make the good times all that much sweeter (see Astros, Longhorns, Rockets, Oilers...).

I would have to say Tennessee

not only for VY, but my favorite college player, Michael Griffin.. From the first time I saw him beat down some ou player, I was hooked... Love his attitude.. But, to be honest, I never followed much NFL until VY went in.

OU SUCKS!

Houston Native

Being from Houston, I have a natural tendency to root for my hometown teams. I was never really into the Oilers, but was saddened to see Houston lose a Pro team. I've been an Astros and Rockets fan all my life. I did enjoy the Cowboys SB wins along with the Broncos and Packers. I would say I am a Texans fan, but I don't follow pro sports to anywhere near the extent I do college sports.

10 miles uphill through the snow.

You young ones have a wealth of choices. But once upon a time there wasn't much choice at all.

When I was young, there were no upper level pro teams in Texas. Then on the football side the AFL developed, but all we got on TV was Austin's Channel 7 and the Chicago Bears. Arghhhh. Got to see a lot of Jim Brown. A lotta of blood lust football, very boring until the last two minutes before the half. Saw YA Tittle throw 7 TDs in a game (on TV).

Saw the AFL on San Antonio stations when visiting there, but in the 50s there wasn't much. The AFL teams were much more exciting than the NFL teams.

I saw the Houston Colt .45s when they started. We drove down one evening to see them play the Cubs. Ron Santo and Ernie Banks hit back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches and that was it for the whole damn game. Lots of skeeters. Then we drove back to Central Texas. Would later see the Astros; much better. Also saw Ali-Inoki fight live at Dome; strangest fucking fight ever. Never saw so many puzzled and disappointed people in one place (except for Aggies after '65 21-17 Texas victory, when they all cried, the whole damn stadium full; best sight ever.)

There were the Austin Senators, AA/AAA farm team in the old stadium down by where the Coliseum is, west of the current auditorium. Great old stadium and I watched them play a few times. Once saw the ss and second basemen collide head-to-head on a single up the middle. Knocked both of them out cold. No permanent injury, though; very lucky. San Antonio also had a farm team, the Missions if I remember correctly.

Finally the Cowboys came in and there was pro football. Saw them play in the Cotton Bowl versus Pittsburgh when Bobby Lane was still in uniform and in his last year. He didn't play. Fun game, neither were very good at all. Long before they became America's team. Saw another great collision: with a runner (on a punt I think) going up the sideline, two big linemen came roaring full speed from opposite directions. Lots of people in between; at the last second everyone cleared out and these guys hit without really seeing each other. Knocked both of them out of the game and made the stadium echo. Better than Jim Brown running over CBs.

So, I've liked Dallas since the beginning; thought Tom was ready to go but didn't like how it happened. Murchison was dirty (read J. Edgar Hoover book by Anthony Summers) despite being so lionized by Dallas press, so Jerry was a step up; not much, but some. Loved the great defenses of the earlier era, Too Tall, Too Mean and the Manster. And the offenses of the later ain't-enough-balls-to-go-around era.

Enjoyed Houston when Earl was there. Before that they were really boring; Bud Adams was always a world class asshole. Besides, I don't like Houston, the city, at all. Have a tsunami on me.

Watch VY anytime; enjoy the Titans. Jeff Fisher is a fine coach, but more defensively oriented than offense. Hope they get VY a line, receivers and more D; from recent reports they're doing that.

Texans: when they do something, I'll watch. They ain't, and I ain't gonna.

Basketball: No favs. I like college, Horns and HS.

Just as I suspected...

VY got almost a third of the votes...

Go boom, mothers. Please, just go boom.

Miami - rough year

Born in Miami, only lived there a year before moving to texas. Dolphins are the only Miami team I root for because Marlins and Heat came after I started going for the astros and spurs.
Live in Nashville now and they would be 2nd favorite team, mostly due to the 4 horns they suit up.

Fantasy Football

I think after playing 10 years of  fantasy football, dishing out too much $$$ and not winning as much, I has lessoned my fandom for particular teams.  As crazy for cheering for players sounds, I do it.
