Barnes' joke is gonna get y'all some unwelcome attention
Barnes makes a joke in an interview about playing in Little Rock, but I don't think the piggies will see the humor in it.

Barnes says, "Be nice, or we'll buy you out."
The problem here is, we know there are some Arkansas fans who simply won't understand that Barnes' comments are meant as a joke.
Barnes probably just assured himself that the fans in Little Rock will be rooting like crazy for Austin Peay, moreso than they would just for the underdog.
They're already getting riled up on the pig bulletin boards
Will this effect texas' performance at all? No. They'll still win.
P.S. The Statesman link is worth reading, if only to see the look back at Nolan Richardson's experiences playing in Austin.

No surprises
There's no love lost between Austin and Fayetteville, and the locals up there aren't going to root for Texas regardless of what Rick says. Let 'em play this up if they want, but Little Rock wouldn't be a welcome venue for us either way.

Come on Beergut
If you are going to put quote marks around it, get the words between them right. There is a difference between
"Be nice, or we'll buy you out"
and what he actually said
"We’re scheduled to come play Arkansas next year, and if the fans don’t treat us well, we’re not going to come. You can put that out there. I’m serious. We’ve got enough money here we can buy our way out of it. So, they’d better be good to us."
NYCHorn is right. Those of us old enough remember the pigs as an intra-conference rival who was (at times) as hated as the other crimson/maroon-tinted teams.

if not more
I dunno. I think I hated the piggies more when it was the old SWC.

Me too
They were the arch-basketball rival, the first SWC school to play in the big leagues. Those were the days when Aggie Basketball was an oxymoron on par with Aggie Education.

After playing at KState and OSU
we're used to the neverending chorus of boos

I really don't understand why he said that
I definitely hated Arkansas just as much as A&M back then because neither one of them are good sports whether winning or losing. Still, what Barnes said surprises me a lot. It's almost like he is inviting the Arkansas locals to treat us like the hated rivals we used to be during our trip there.
I have to wonder if he did this to light a fire under the team while they are up there. Maybe it's reverse psychology?
by UTAth on Mar 17, 2008 6:29 PM CDT 0 recs
I have no idea why
he said it, but as we see daily on this very blog, how we intend it to sound and how it looks in writing are often two vastly different things. That's the beauty of good blog-speak, you can actually hear the words being said, even though you're just reading them. (Many of you are quite skilled at this.)
When email was first used in business, many of us got burned by it, not realizing how difficult it would be to communicate informally yet without visible/audible emotion. Sometimes those little emoticons helped, but not always.
I cringe when I read quotes like Barnes', because they seem like they came out "wrong". Whether it's as he intended or not is anyone's guess...or for YouTube to decide.

I talk shit about Arkansas
every time they come up in a conversation, much like OU. Maybe it is just a force of habit for him too.

Whatever
First of all, they would boo us anyway, this will just give them another reason. Second of all, I don't think they'll have the energy to boo when we're up by 30. If we just play our game, it won't matter. If, for some reason, we struggle mightily and the game is close, yes it will be loud. But will it really be any worse than playing at OU, OSU, Kansas, or any other place where people under 30 remember playing us?
Barnes was obviously kidding and I wouldn't expect Arkansas fans to be able to tell.

I think
Rick knows what he's doing. We all know he has a wicked sense of humor. I'm pretty sure he knows that his quotes will inflame opponent's fan bases, as they will not understand his tongue-in-cheek style of humor. Two choices - either he makes these kind of comments for a well thought-out reason, or he is just a clueless bozo who pops off without thinking of the consequences. Based on his record here, I know which one I choose.

The game just became a sell-out.
Maybe more TV, too.

The hogville board posts are hilarious
They really took the bait on this one. It's funny just how much it got to them. You'd think someone threatened their family.

Now I know
exactly what Rick is doing. Everyone is talking about the Horns in Houston. Rick doesn't want his team to think they get to Houston automatically, just because they are the #2 seed. When they come out for warm-ups next Friday and start hearing the boos, it should help them remember they have to play their way to Houston.

Anyone else think...
... Rick just made a joke?
I don't think Rick cares what the piggies think of us. If they want to spend a bunch of money just to go boo Texas, whatever. If anyone else thinks this is just a simple joke reply to some silly reporter's question, please let me know I'm not the only one.
by Horn Brain on Mar 18, 2008 1:20 AM CDT 0 recs
That's what I insinuated above
You can't print a smirk, or an eye-roll. And many piggies probably don't know that Rick is not the most serious guy around. He has fun with this stuff, like with the watermelon yell. Whether it backfires or not is up to the five guys on the floor. Piggies need crap like this to keep themselves busy so they don't have (more) sex with their siblings.

Have to agree
On rereading my earlier post, it sounded like I thought Rick plans these comments ahead of time. That is not the case. I do think he is smart enough to know that his jokes will be taken seriously by a large portion of our rivals' fan bases. These are folks not known for their wit, after all. If Rick thought he was hurting his team, he would not make these cracks during press conferences.
Rick's sense of humor is well known around here. We enjoy it, but more importantly his players enjoy it. Remember the story about the recruiting visit dinner for Kevin Durant, where Rick and Kevin were cracking up? I'll take a coach who can recruit like Rick over one who is careful not to piss off other teams' fans.

and yet
the redneck, sister lovin' pigs seem to forget something Broyles said after playing in Austin years ago....
"I hope we never play in Austin again. ... I would want our team to be sent anywhere but Austin."
The piggie board is spewing hatred based on.....absolutely nothing. What do they have?
Baseball? Nope.
Basketball? Not anymore.
Football? Nutt left for a reason.
Women's b-ball? Volleyball? Track? Swimming? Puh-lease. We all know the Horns have a storied history of success in all of these sports.
How do you shut up a piggie? Just tell them "1969."

Re-posted from last year
19 Indoor team National Championships since 1984 including all from 1984 to 1995. 12 Outdoor team National Championships sine 1985. 11 Cross Country team National Championships since 194. That's an incredible run.
John McDonnell has won 42 National Championshipps since 1984. And he sent his daughter to the University of Texas.

Rick is not stupid
He knows exactly what he's doing. He and Gail Goestenkors both talked on Sportsline last night about keeping your team focused. They said that when you have a highly-seeded team, one of the biggest challenges is getting the players to remember that you still have to win games to advance. You can be the highest #1 seed in the tournament, but if you lose your first round game, you're done. Your season is over.
I agree with the person who said Rick WANTS his team to play in a hostile environment so that they don't forget that nothing is easy or guaranteed in the NCAA tournament.
But I do think it's hysterical that all the pig fans are all "oh it's on now" and "payback is hell." What are they going to do, hurt the players' feelings? It's like they think they're the first fan base to ever think of booing the Texas Longhorns.

Re:
First Alabama, now Arkansas? With Oklahoma also under constant siege, how many fronts can we keep fighting before we're stretched as thin as the Maginot Line?

I agree with UTAth
It appears that someone threatened their sister/wives. Man, I haven't had a good inbread joke since the last time we played Oklahoma...

We better watch out next season,
Pig Sooey has two guards who are phenomenal: The Inbred Brothers, Jed and Fred. (Their parents and grandparents are all siblings.) They may be slow in the thinkin' department but they can really move down the court and they got a mean streak that just won't quit!

These 2
plus the front court of brothers Larry, Daryl and Daryl make quite a team. Don't worry. Rick has hired 2 champion hog callers, and will station one behind each basket. When Texas has the ball, one will call the hogs back to their own end, and vice-versa. I predict a final score of 200 - 0.
Part of the joy of being a Longhorn is making fun of our rivals (or ex-rivals). With Okies, Aggies and Arkies, the fun never ends.
