9-0 Horns, timeout APU

Nice start. Governors can't hit and we're getting out in transition and moving the ball well in the halfcourt. AJ with 5 early points. Love it.

not complaining, but feels like atchley

has gone a bit cold lately from the 3pt line.

Not a big deal, especially today; would like to see him hit a couple, though.

Pittman in and contributing

Talk about a size advantage. This must feel like middle school ball for Sexy Dex.

Horns up 19-3. Another timeout by APU.

by awiggo on Mar 21, 2008 2:30 PM CDT reply actions

James = matchup nightmare

We need to feed him in the LOW POST. Tired of the jumpers. If we get jumpers, it better be from an inside-out game.

Pittman in the game and just scored. Great that he's playing. I was thinking that since their team is so small, they would play fast, so Dexy couldn't get minutes.

We need to post up Connor

but then again, how many post moves does he have?

Connor improved so much this year, but in the upcoming offseason, that's what he needs to focus on - his post-up game. He should be in the paint practicing hooks/fade aways/layups. He needs Wright to help him get stronger.

25-10 Texas, under 8

Just missed a highlight dunk from DJ to James. That would have been something if DaMo had been able to throw it down.

Longhorns have a tremendous advantage in size and talent. I'd like to see them play sharply though. Don't just go through the motions. Keep running our offense, lock down on D, and stayed focused.

This one could get sloopy very easily.

Would you suspect that Rick is dictating future coverage? I mean, the Horns could just dump inside to the big guys the rest of the game, no problemo.

Just letting the boys play. When AJ is on, his teammates look for him more often. I don't think Miami or Stanford would change their designed defenses based on this game.

Consider

how well we've played, and Butler has a bigger lead on So. Alabama at the half. Interesting.

Good first half, though. After the Duke and Tennessee debacles, a 2 seed should take nothing for granted.

by jc25 on Mar 21, 2008 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

At half, Texas leads 39-24

This seems unfair. Texas is just way to big and too athletic for the Governors. It would have been even worse if APU hadn't hit a few threes to end the half.

Again, Texas needs to play another half of focused basketball. I will be disappointed if we win by 18 but play sloppy ball in the second half.

Pittman game Barnes some nice minutes off the bench. I want to see similar contributions from Chap and Wingman.

DJ is actually a little off with his shot but is distributing the ball nicely. AJ and Damion also with strong halves. And Mason is just being Mason.

Considering the size advantage

A 22-16 rebounding margin is not that impressive.

In a game where our big men should be dominating, Connor has jacked up 3 threes. He's always going to be a finesse scorer, but he should still be able to score in the paint. Hopefully someone like a Chris Mihm can come over in the summer and help him out with his inside game.

by goingforthecorner on Mar 21, 2008 3:07 PM CDT reply actions

Yes rebounding is still the issue for the horns..

if we are going to be a serious contender in this tournament, we cannot give up offensive rebounds. Texas seems to give up on long rebounds....

Texas leads 51-29, under 16

Longhorns on cruise conrol. DJ playing very calmly and confidently, Mason has found his jumper, and Dex giving us great minutes off the bench.

Keep playing at a high level and give those starters some rest with about eight to go.

Barnes

I don't think Rick has stood up all game. Just letting the Longhorns play.

Nice dish DJ to Connor for three.

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 21, 2008 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

Mason

should play a bigger role on offense. His athleticism is underrated. The opposing teams focuses on DJ, AJ, and James. This should allow Mason to get open looks to drive, especially if Connor makes his threes, forcing the big men outside of the paint.

Mase, DJ, AJ, James are all capable of penetrating.

Does Barnes hate Smith?

Why does he never get playing time in these situations? Who cares if he sucks? There's no need for DJ and AJ to be on the court at this time.

I'm going to guess that Smith is a horrible defender and/or has a low basketball IQ, and with Barnes philosophy, you have to earn your playing time.

And yet JD Lewis has somehow gotten playing time, probably because of his seniority. That's the Mack Brown in him.

by goingforthecorner on Mar 21, 2008 4:05 PM CDT reply actions

Re:

Lewis can handle the ball (sort of). Smith can...score. During garbage time, you'd pick the former over the latter.

With that said, there's no reason why any of the starters should be out on the court at this time. Save them for Sunday. Come on, Rick, use your head.

UConn lost their starting PG Price, so #13 San Diego has a great chance to pull off the upset.

I will say as I have said all season..

Justin Mason is pretty much key in every game.  No one out-hustles him.  His offense is shaping up nicely if he could just get the passes a little more on target.. We are just too used to seeing DJ make those types of passes that Mason's missing.

OU SUCKS!

by LadyLonghorninOK on Mar 21, 2008 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I feel the same way

His intensity is one of the BIG reasons we had a shot at winning that Big XII Championship game.  His defensive play is so overlooked.  The media likes to call him the "glue man", but they really have no idea or they would give him more credit than that.

by RLee49 on Mar 21, 2008 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not obvious is it?

That J. Mason is my favorite player is it?? The rest are great but remember when Barnes benched him? What happened? Think of the chemistry these five have together.. JM is the one that pulls it all together.  I watched him last year all year long doing the same thing, this year he is much better and I feel he is very overlooked by most..
