McDonald's All American Game 8:30 ESPN
ESPN will televise the boys McDonald's All American game tonight at 8:30 p.m. So far, Texas has just one committment for next year, J'Covan Brown. Brown was not named a McDonald's All American. However, the Longhorns are in the running for two other players who will be participating tonight, Tyreke Evans and Scott Hopson.
Evans is a 6-5 combo guard from Pennsylvania who is said to be deciding between Memphis and Texas with Villanova also in the running. He appears to be waiting until the conclusion of this college basketball season before announcing his decision. He has said that who decides to leave early for the NBA will be a factor in his decision.
Hopson is a 6-5 small forward from Kentucky who recently backed off his verbal pledge to Mississippi State. He will decide between Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Texas and Louisville.

Hopson is fun to watch
That little dribble into the paint from the baseline scoop was sweet.

Question
JD Lewis is the only senior, and we currently have one commitment from J'Covan Brown. However, it seems that Barnes is still recruiting hard.
AW or anyone else, do we know that Harrison Smith is transferring or DJ is going to the pros? What happens if we get a commitment from Evans today, and DJ stays and Smith insists on staying?

It will work out
It is highly likely that either Augustin or James, if not both, will turn pro. So, we should have at least one more scholarship to offer. If they both stay, then there is also a chance, as you pointed out, that Smith could transfer.
Add up those possiblities and what Barnes knows that we don't, and we certainly have another scholarship for the 08 class.
We won't take three though. If Evans commits or Hopson or this other kid who just got out of Indiana scholarship wants to come to Texas, then that will be it for the 08 class.

I'm going to guess Evans wants to get big PT
That's why KD went to us, because he knew he'd get plenty of playing time seeing how we lost everyone the previous year.
But if DJ and James both comeback, would Evans be willing to play as a backup for DJ/AJ the 1st year? Then again, if both those two guys come back, I'm not exactly going to regret losing him. At 6'5", maybe he could play at the 3 and James at the 4 for a bit.

Definitely
I'm glad to see Barnes has put himself in a situation like this, and I wouldn't mind at all if we missed out on a few of these guys because of DJ and James deciding to stick around.

Not a lot of great defense here

Evans
He looks like one of those hard-nosed, strong work ethic type players we would love to have. He's definitely not a "glue guy" though. This guy can score in bunches and seems to always be around the ball.

You're right
If he does end up choosing Texas, he better get used to passing then. We don't need no stinkin' ball hogs.

Remember, many of these guys are natural
ball hogs. AJ averaged 27 ppg in high school, and if I remember correctly, Damion was well over 20 ppg. They played central scoring roles for their teams. It will take a while for those guys to overcome that tendency.
An interesting project would be comparing their HS averages to their collegiate performance.
In AJ's case, he didn't pass much. We played against him his final two years. The first time he nailed us for 27. But the second year we had a really fine defense, were to go to the regional semis only to lose to San Antonio Sam Houston, who fell in the 4A title game to the 6-9 monsters from Dallas.* We held AJ to 17 but we still lost by five; they were a fine 5A team and had other weapons.
- Now if we had both those guys, we'd would be having vastly difference conversations about Stanford. There would be some serious kick ass talk.
