Orange-White Game Thoughts

The highlight so far for me is that John Chiles has not had a good day at quarterback. Greg Davis apparently said that Chiles has made great strides as a "quarterback" but it was not evident today. Chiles misfired on the majority of his throws, underthrowing an out route by the running back and a drag route to Dan Buckner. Chiles can still run though.

Deon Beasley had a nice pass breakup. He followed that up with a pass interference call going against Cosby. Real nice throw by McCoy on that play.

McGee was probably the most impressive running back. He lowered his shoulder pads on one run, knocking a defensive back to the ground. McGee really should have gotten credit for a tackle.

Hard to tell anything regarding the offensive and defensive line.

Sherrod seemed a more complete QB

than Chiles. Sure, Chiles can run like a fiend, but Sherrod is elusive in his own right. But he sure looked like the superior passer by a long shot.

by whills on Mar 29, 2008 1:38 PM CDT   0 recs

I Agree.

Sherrod has a nice, high release and looked confident in all his throws...which were for the most part accurate. Chiles' burst of speed is dazzling, but Harris gives me a lot more confidence. Buckner's big catch on the deep toss from Kinne made me happy. I'm excited about him and Grant. =)

Beasley is gonna be a force in the backfield. Hook 'em!

QB's and RB's

I personally don't think any of the QB's looked good throwing the ball. Colt made a few passes, but missed a few too (wide open shipley down the middle). Chiles is special when it comes to running the ball. I hope his throwing improves. I'm also hoping our defense has something to do with both QB's stuggling (I think so).

I think both running backs looked really good. Fozzy looked amazing to me, he has great speed and quickness. McGee is a bulldozer! The Texas running back situation is good.

The defense looked good against the pass. Bobino and Orakpo stood out to me. I think the defense is going to be good, they held their own without any special play calling.

I saw A LOT of muffed balls on kick returns. We have to fix this, but it very fixable.

I agree with Mack, the schedule is going to be tough next year. The defense might just bring a championship back to TEXAS!

by Longhorns84 on Mar 29, 2008 2:00 PM CDT   0 recs

Chiles is soo big...he looks like a runningback

he made some horrible throws...he seemed more eager to show the public what he can do with his feet rather than be a good passer.

I think the touch-rule made the QBs to make quicker decisions and consequently, McCoy and Chiles made some bad throws. But Chiles should be able to hit a 5 yd out route with his eyes closed....

Passing game was almost nonexistent today...hopefully that is due to our superb defense and much improved secondary...

Fozzy is a beast and I think we will see more of him upcoming season. McGee did not play too great today...I think we are still missing a deep threat WR. Shipley and Quan are basically same type of players, and Brandon Collins seems not quick enough to be our play maker. All these three wide receivers are a bit undersized and I don't think we have a kickass TE this year.

Chiles = RB

I've always thought Chiles would be a beast as a running back rather than QB.  I think once Gilbert shows up next year, poor Chiles might find himself playing second fiddle again.  Everyone thought Chiles would be the next VY since he's a mobile QB, but his passing just isn't up to snuff (which people said about VY but mostly because he has that funky side arm action).  Maybe he'll prove me wrong.  I don't care as long as we play better than we have the last 2 years and come out with more than 10 wins (as in, losing to OU, KState AND A&M again this year would be a disaster).

Honk if you're longhorny!

Don't worry about K St

if we lose to them, it will have to be in the Big 12 championship game.

Blake Gideon

is a great young player. He saw most of the strong safety  action for both teams, and I think he did a acceptable job covering even our most experienced receivers. Earl Thomas showed up to play too, but got lost in zone schemes from time to time.

Wasn't Earl one of those 9 early enrollees?

If I remember, he's from WOS like Beasley and would have been a year behind him.

by whills on Mar 29, 2008 8:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not surprisingly

I was disappointd with the QB situation.  I had high hopes for Chiles, but I'm not really surprised that hasn't developed much, since he has seen almost no playing time.

McCoy is just flat out average, which isn't going to cut it for Texas to do any better than we've done the past 2 years.

Sherrod looked surprisingly good.  I hope he sees more playing time.

Overall, I still hold the opinion that Colt needs to be benched.  We aren't going to win any championships with him, so we might as well try to get some of the other guys some experience, instead of ignorantly sticking it out through a failed system like we did this last year.

Sadly, based on past performance, I expect that Mack and GD won't give the other QB's much playing time until Colt is out of eligibility, so it will be 2010, probably 2011 before we contend for a Big XII or MNC again, which is senseless.

by Texas Our Texas on Mar 29, 2008 5:41 PM CDT   0 recs

McCoy Capable

Colt can do the job - I really think the big issue with him last year was the drop in OL effectiveness.  If the OL is solid - I have a feeling that he will improve from his freshmen year numbers and that will be sufficient to take this team to its overall potential.

by realmccoy on Mar 29, 2008 7:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

scary. worried.

What I saw today was a lot of bad passing, dropped catches & kickoffs, short & negative yardage gains, 4th downs, and general confusion.  The offensive side of the ball looked totally lost out there, to me, despite a couple of decent/acceptable runs by RBs.  As for the QBs, ouch.  I agree that Harris looked way better than Chiles today.

Defensively, coverage seemed pretty good.  I hope that the reason the offense looked so bad was that the defense was so good, but I am not convinced this was the case.

Overall, a boring game, and a cause for concern, in my opinion.

:(

by crocodile235 on Mar 29, 2008 6:06 PM CDT   0 recs

I vote for the D.

What I saw today was a lot of bad passing, dropped catches & kickoffs, short & negative yardage gains, 4th downs, and general confusion.

Usually when you see things like this, it means the defense is stealing their lunch money and kickin' their ass.

The one positive I see is the fact we have gone to real live action. This crap will show up much sooner, will be more apparent, against a good D. We don't need to frickin' wait until we play a good team to find out the harsh truth, not when we can find out in practice. This puts the onus on GD and Mack.

The caveat (or excuse: pick 'em) is that Mack said we were using basic plays (last year's attack) and not anything from this coming year. I hope he wasn't whistlin' past the graveyard of 10-win seasons.

And, frankly, I don't want to hear how tough the schedule is. It's way to early to be downplaying expectations.

by whills on Mar 29, 2008 8:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I was going to make a new comment

But you've said it already...

One positive on offense was the overall effort and play of the running backs. I liked what I saw from Fozzy Whitaker.

by beast in bama on Mar 29, 2008 8:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought Fozzy looked good, too.

But, really, Chiles was the best RB on the field. We should take a vote.

by whills on Mar 29, 2008 8:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not that bad

It really wasn't all that bad. I actually think the defense played really well overall. Even though the OL and DL are both very young, the DL was in the backfield all day without even blitzing. The OL didn't look all that great to me.

by UTKevin66 on Mar 30, 2008 12:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

final grade imo

QB- C+.. colt didnt look like he's progressed... with all of greg davis's prase that john's accuracy has improved... well we have the same opinion on that...

RB- B-.. saw alot of depth but face it were not going to be rewinding our "tevo" to see Chris or Vondrell blazing by everybody

WR- C.. Wow extremely dissapointed, but cant really tell with the level the QB's were playing at, but did not see a homerun hitter. kinda sad to say that shipley is the vertical threat

OL-B.. should have the most improvment on the offensive side of the ball from last season

DL/LB B-.. i could kinda see the "aggresive" approach that Will brings to the table

DB's-f'in A.. i think well be able to breath a lil easier when a QB drops back, imo is the most improved unit on the defensive side.

feel free to pick at this seeing the next game is 153 days 16 hours 02 minutes 34 sec away

by bbcc07 on Mar 29, 2008 7:58 PM CDT   0 recs

Boy, it looks to me like

if Chiles moves to RB slash receiver, this makes all three groups (QB, RB, WR) better.

by whills on Mar 29, 2008 8:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

How is QB Better?

Colt can't get it done.  Plain and simple.  I would love for him to prove me wrong and go 13-0, but it's just not going to happen.  He has peaked, and it is time to look to the future and find a QB who can actually develop into someone who can lead this time to at least a Big XII.

rating the schedule

from statesman.com:

"This was maybe our best spring since we've been here," Brown said. "Now, we've got the toughest schedule we've ever had coming up in the fall."

Texas opens the season Aug. 30 at home against Florida Atlantic.

I just thought that was funny.

by SelimSivad on Mar 29, 2008 10:24 PM CDT   0 recs

Colt

Colt is lucky that his back-ups are all struggling. I think for us to return to the MNC game, we have to hope Chiles gets it going. Colt's specialty is passing, and he really doesn't look good doing it. Chiles specialty is running, and atleast he looks good doing that.

I really liked the RB though. I think Fozzy will big the next big name coming out of UT. He looked special to me.

The defense will be much better this year. I think the whole season depends on the QB's again(not good).

We still have Desean Hales coming in! I hope he gets a chance at returning kicks, since nobody can catch the ball now.

by Longhorns84 on Mar 30, 2008 7:23 AM CDT   0 recs

texas needs

to move Harris up over Chiles. Harris looked a million times better throwing the ball and he can still run. maybe this would motivate Chiles to switch positions.

#1 schedule??

MB just said the 2008 schedule "may be the toughest in Texas history"

.
After getting back from the game and watching the tape, I almost cracked a rib laughing at Mack's fairytale projection. For someone who claims a strong sense of history, he's not even close.

1979:
#5 Missouri
#3 Oklahoma
#10 Arkansas
#5 Houston
#17 Baylor
#13 Washington

1990:
#21 PennSt.
#20 Colorado
#4 Oklahoma
#3 Houston
#4 Miami

FloridaAtl, UTEP, Arkansas and Rice will never make for a school's strongest schedule Mack. First you have to schedule somebody.

While Missouri and OU may well face one another in a CCG of unbeatens, the remainder of the schedule is not made of the stuff required to make a school's toughest season. TexasTech might be a borderline Top-10 team. The Kansas game is too late in the season for them to be ranked. The Ags lost both of their lines and won't be worth much for quite awhile.

--- All roads to the Big-XII Championship lead through OU/RRS. It's not just another game! We're all about championships here. ---

play calling

Did anyone else think that GD's "basic playcalling" during the spring game looked like every game he called last year, with the exception of trick plays that blew up in his face and lost us 4-5yrds? Chiles' passing was awful, and unless he develops some kind of passing threat, he won't ever be a good option at QB. Harris definitely deserves the look at backup.  He looked better passing during open practices and still looks better now. Don't get me wrong, I love Chiles at a RB/WR role(assuming he can catch). GD and MB need to pull their collective heads out of their a$$es, because Chiles is not panning out at QB, his awesome runs notwithstanding. Imagine what it would be like with Harris, McGee, Chiles and Hales in the lineup. An embarrassment of riches.

by 98horn on Mar 30, 2008 4:13 PM CDT   0 recs

They used last year's attack

so that's not a big surprise.

The first reverse to Shipley set up the TD. They tried it again if I remember correctly, for a small gain. Then they got blown up by Acho for the big loss. Good to see a DE hold his ground and not get sucked in.

Agree wrt to Chiles. His legs are his best asset.

by whills on Mar 30, 2008 4:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Just Sayin'

GD is vanilla, even in regular games. I just thought it was funny that his "vanilla" playcalling didn't strike me as different from his "regular" playcalling.  I hope GD proves me wrong this year, and does tricksy things like make adjustments in the 2d half.

this was just a show to us football fans who are craving for some football already...and Greg Davis didn't want to throw anything out there that would give Florida Atlantic something to study over from now till August....

QB's

Why isn't anybody talking about how bad Colt looked? We know Chiles is a work in progress at passing, but atleast he can run the ball well. Colt is going on his third year now, and he just isn't standing out like he should. He struggled at passing, and he can't touch Chiles or Harris running the ball. Hell, why don't we just move Harris to the starting role!!!

re:

"Why isn't anybody talking about how bad Colt looked?"

Not everyone has to agree with you.  We get that you are anti-Colt.  You've made 5-10 such comments in the past week across different Diaries.  At this point it just seems as though you are attempting to bait someone into an argument about it.  You may need to switch lures, as they don't seem to be biting.

If you want a website where everyone will agree with your stance on our current Longhorn QB, then start one called www.FireColtDavis.com

Disclaimer: I may be wrong.

by Shake on Mar 31, 2008 8:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You also need to remember

the plays were blown dead several times after the defense touched Colt. TYou know thats not how football works....Think of all those instances where Colt escaped pressure with his feet and made big plays and Im  pretty sure our DBs are talented enough to cover our below average WR corps.
Not to mention we pretty much have no threat in TE spot.

anti-Colt

I'm not anti-Colt. I just speak the truth. I just don't think its right that some people bash Chiles for not throwing the ball great, when Colt(the passer)isn't either. I'm just trying to get people to not give up on Chiles. He will be special in the future!

by Longhorns84 on Apr 1, 2008 11:11 AM CDT   0 recs

Complaining about people NOT complaining

Makes you look anti-Colt.

Why isn't anybody talking about how bad Colt looked?

Personally I saw some good, I saw some bad, I take it all and then I have the facts of life.  The facts of life.
