Russell Shepard to be a Tiger

Orangebloods.com is reporting that Shepard has verbally committed to LSU. Guess we were wrong, he is not going to wait for the Terrell Pryor decision.

At least, we get Garrett Gilbert.

damn

you beat me to it. As I mentioned before, I'm happy that Texas got Garret instead. He is the better QB.

It shouldn't have been either-or

Shepard would have been played WR or DB, if we had just given him a chance at QB.  RS and GG were not mutually exclusive.

But

Where was this ever actually confirmed?  I loved the idea that we might be able to get Shepard as an athlete who could compete for QB, but this is quickly turning into an urban legend of sorts.

Where are the facts that truly prove "All we had to do was offer him a shot at QB, and he would have played any position at Texas"?  This just seems like another case of something that became factual a week after reading it on blogs.

what constitutes "offer" LSU vs UT?

It's one thing to offer a chance at QB, it's another thing to say come BE the QB. By recruiting Gilbert, clearly the better of the two prospects AT QB, there was no way Mack could say come be the man.

LSU on the other hand is suffering from Perrilouxser disease and has only one QB worth anything on the roster and who will be a RS sophomore (I believe) this coming fall. Nature abhors a vacuum, and the vaccum that is currently the LSU QB situation sucked in Darrell Shepard.

Inside Texas

spoke with Shepard several times and he indicated that Mack did not feel comfortable offering him as a quarterback because of the glut on our roster.  He told Inside Texas that all he wanted at Texas was the chance to compete for the quarterback job when he came in.  He said that he was willing to be an All-American DB or WR, but he wanted a fair chance.  Apparently, Mack didn't feel comfortable telling him he would have that chance, which is what I don't quite understand, but can't really blame Mack for saying.  With talk surfacing of Sherrod Harris or GJ Kinne changing positions this spring and speculation that one or both could transfer, Shepard was considering waiting until the end of spring practice to see if anything opened up (which he also told Inside Texas).  So no, this was not an urban legend, but came straight from the mouth of the only person who could talk about it, Shepard himself.

The writing was on the wall, though, after he visited the LSU Junior Day and spoke glowingly about the experience.  His girlfriend goes to LSU and, honestly, the situation there is wide open for him to come in as a true freshman and win the job.  Barring unforeseen circumstances here at UT, there was little chance of him getting on the field as a quarterback in his first several seasons.

As disappointed as Texas fans understandably are about this situation, I think it's important to remember that we have three more years (probably) of John Chiles, and assuming a redshirt year for Garrett Gilbert, three years of him leading the 'Horns.  Realistically, we're talking about our quarterback situation being under control for the next six years.  Any program in the country would be happy about that.  With so much attention being paid to recruiting, it's easy to focus on the Next Big Thing and lose track of the Last Big Thing.  Remember how excited everyone was about John Chiles last fall?  Well, he's coming back with a year under his belt and new resolutions from the coaching staff to involve him more (who knows how much they will be worth).

It's unfortunate that our quarterback situation worked out like it did, but hey, it's better to have an embarassment of riches than a bare cupboard like we did after Vince left.  So, best of luck to Russell Shepard, from everything I have read about him he seems like a great kid and deserves a chance to play quarterback when he gets to college.

Thanks

All these points are extremely valid.  As far as I remember, no one ever linked or sourced the Inside Texas interview w/ Shepard.

But sadly, these days I don't even trust the direct quotes.  If so, I'd be watching Scott & JC in Austin this year....and still waiting for VY to come back and play his senior year.

Exactly

I agree, Shake. Some posters on rivals.com which have been reliable in the past report that Shep was recruited as an athlete, but was offered a chance of playing QB. Take it for what's it worth. But the kid wants to play QB. Even in the publicized interview he said that he wants a chance, a real chance. Why the need to emphasize the real thing?

Anyway, Shep can't throw yet and I'm very happy that Mack did not deceive him.  Get well soon Garret and brings us more championships.

LSU and Miles

With the QB situation in limbo in Baton Rouge and Les Miles having no problem putting freshmen on the field, it makes sense for an elite athlete to go to the school that just won the national title by being a daredevil and letting his players make plays.

And the Offensive Coordinator didn't go anywhere. He's still at LSU

And I agree, you may soon have to worry more about Houston and Golden triangle players. Maybe even more players from East Teaxs towns like Tyler and Lufkin, too

Better than OU

At least he's not going anywhere where he's really going to hurt Texas. The Horns get the QB they most wanted and LSU does the same. I would've loved Shepard to come to Texas, but what can we do?

An addendum to your comment

The first thing that a lot of people thought about following the news of the impeding surgery for Gilbert were the comparisons to what happened to Drew Brees.  It turns out that the two injuries weren't comparable, which is positive, even though Brees seems to have made a completely or close to complete recovery.  Brees severely tore his labrum, while Gilbert suffered from a slightly torn glenoid labrum and played the entire football season with it.  The doctors expect him to make a full recovery, although there has been no word on how his follow-up visit went on February 26th.

well truth be told...

with major on board, i think gilbert can thrive.

and by that i mean, i saw applewhite doing a lot more than coaching running backs on those 2 practices I saw.

Taking nothing away from Shepard.....

but i'm from Houston and have seen this guy play in the  regular season and the playoffs and he is just a pure athlete right now.  That's not to say he cannot develop into a good quarterback but if you look at his youtube highlights all he does is run.  All i'm saying is that compared to a guy like Vince Young (even out of high school), he is not as advanced in throwing at this point in his career.  IMO I think its just the loss of a very good athlete.

by vyrexall on Mar 4, 2008 11:12 AM CST reply actions

Agreed

I'm with vyrexall on this one. I saw the YouTube highlights, too. He's definitely not a pocket passer. I love the VY'ness of his feet, but, honestly, how long before the zone-read becomes the wishbone?

I'm really of the mind that the zone-read has run it's course. Same for the spread offense.

Just my 2-cents.

I would totally read the Washington Post every single day if I cared at all about helping Dan Steinberg keep his job.

by Bombilla on Mar 4, 2008 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

RIP Zone Read?

Bombilla, what makes you think that the zone read and spread offense have run their course?  I think OU's defense would argue that spread option offenses are still working pretty well.  They could certainly tell you how to spell Noel Devine's last name (OK, maybe not cuz they are Dirt Burglars, but my point is that they spent a lot of time looking at the back of his jersey fading into the distance).  Arkansas ran the zone read with two running backs last year and defenses (even vaunted LSU) had nightmares trying to stop them, even when they knew a run was coming.  I think that's the beauty of the zone read versus the option attack a la Nebraska.  A defense with speed can stretch that play out, but it's not so easy with the zone read.  Ask USC.  I understand that there are offensive trends that come and go in football, but I feel like it will still be a few more years until defenses catch up with the spread offenses.  Some schools never will be able to because I think the way to combat the spread offense is speed on defense and I just don't see their being enough to go around college football, especially the way power schools dominate recruiting.  Maybe we'll see more defenses run something like a 3-2-5 or 3-1-6 to put the most speed on the field they can.  Then maybe the pendulum will swing back to tight formations and the return of fullbacks.

Elaboration on your point?

Please refer to the Rose Bowl as Vince Young Field at the Rose Bowl -- he owns that place

by ghostoftheplaymaker4 on Mar 4, 2008 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

Well

I guess my thinking is that "gadget" option-type offenses have about a 3 or 4 year lifespan. I'm thinking about the wishbone, the flex-bone, the flex-T, etc - they all had good runs. I know that Rich Rodriguez (or Bill Synder) developed the zone-read, but let's face it: no one really made it devastating until GD wrapped it around VY.

Plus, there's a reason they don't run this offense in the NFL: speed kills it. We all know that college football borrows from the NFL, and it's just a matter of time before NCAA defenses catch up to it.

Now, I'm thinking what I said about the spread-offense becoming obsolete was a silly comment because as I was trying to formulate my argument I started contradicting myself. So, I rescind what I said about the spread.

I don't know if I'm explaining my opinion succinctly or convincingly, but let me just summarize by saying: I think the zone-read has it's run its course as a base offensive strategy.

I would totally read the Washington Post every single day if I cared at all about helping Dan Steinberg keep his job.

My biggest concern...

...here is just how many of Texas Top-25 will end up following him to LSU to play for the defending Nat'l Champions. There are a lot of quality names being thrown around.

We have a better shot at a title..

with Gilbert, than we do with Shepard.  Trash me all you want.

But if you really want to know why, I read from a poster on hornfans.com who knows Gale Gilbert.  Mack told them that Garrett would be their QB of the future and that they have been recruiting to switch to the spread offense to better fit his strengths.  Look at our abundance of receivers.

And if you still don't believe me, look at Gilbert's eye-popping numbers; 64.6% competion, 4826 yards, 52 td's, 12 int's.  All of this came with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, he injured it in the third game of the season.

Shepard is a serious talent, but his future does NOT lie at QB.

My adopted son Sergio Kindle does not sleep; he waits.

by mvplonghorns on Mar 5, 2008 10:26 AM CST reply actions

nope

we (would've) had a better shot at a Nat'l Title with Shep.
Our glorious, highly regarded pocket passers do not have the improvisation skills to over come GD's gameplanning and play calling.
The air-attack based offense failed miserably this year.  We dont have the chops to run a Tech/Mizzou offense.  UT needs a ground control game.  VY, while a supremely efficient passer, was actually running a ground attack.

by DogTown on Mar 5, 2008 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

I've got a feeling...

... we're going to kill this kid.  They want to run the Patriots offense?  Or Missouri's?  The answer to that is Kill-the-QB, and someone we play will have the D-line to do it.  I'm scared for these slow kids we're putting back there.

Go boom, mothers. Please, just go boom.

Didn't ASU run the spread in the Holiday Bowl? Didn't we pretty much kill that poor Rudaaaay bastard?

Even VY

Had a great O-line in front of him, and he could not have done what he did without them.  Rudy Carpenter didn't have a good O-Line and that was his problem this past year... and ours as well at times.

Lord willing, IMHO the O-line will be much improved next year.  Gotta have guys to block for you no matter what scheme you are running.

by HornsFan87 on Mar 5, 2008 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

just to add,

Gilbert has some mobility. ran for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Do you have that little trust in our O-line?  Because I thought I mentioned that Mack told Gale Gilbert that he's going to switch over to a spread offense.

My adopted son Sergio Kindle does not sleep; he waits.

by mvplonghorns on Mar 5, 2008 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think it's so much about the O-line...

If an opposing DC wants to get pressure on the QB, he generally can no matter how good your O-line is.  The trick is making them pay for it with a big play, which I have zero confidence in GD to do.  A good O-line just prevents them from getting pressure without opening up the rest of the field.

Go boom, mothers. Please, just go boom.

Admire Mack's Stance
  1.  First of all, Mack is in it for the long run and having the integrity to tell Russell the straight scoop rather than a bait and switch scenario is much better for Texas and Russel.  The reality is that their is a 5 Star athlete in Texas every year.
  1.  Secondly, how far from a QB is Russel?  Must be a Texas country mile if Mack feels more comfortable with Chiles throwing the football than Russel.  Chiles has problems standing on the beach and pitching the ball into the Gulf.
  1. Finally, I wish Russel luck, but I do think he is making a mistake, and not just because I bleed the burnt orange.  What good does it do him to compete at a position that he does not have the long term potential to play in the NFL?  He should have come to Texas, focused on the DB position, and carried on the Thorpe tradition at Texas.  The list of outstanding, athletic college QBs that fail at the position switch in the NFL is almost endless.  The list of people that have switched and had success is very short, maybe headlined by Josh Cribbs and Randall El.
