The Dex Complex follow up:
Sorry this is dated about the Stanford game and Dexter Pittman, but I was out of town for the weekend but I still wanted to get my "I told you so" in before we move on from basketball :-)
The following refers to a previous diary which questioned AW's denial that Dexter Pittman would be an asset against Stanford.
The day after I write that diary the Statesman does a piece featuring how the bench big men would be used against the Lopezeses – it featured Dexter Pittman on the front. Huge pic. Then the inside story line was "Texas tries to see Forest through the Cardinal Trees". I realize that wasn’t the most original line, but I still think they stole it from here on BON.
More importantly came the post game recap Statesman headline "UT Men: Pittman pressured Stanford"
"Since he started guarding me, I started throwing up poor-percentage shots that I don’t normally make," Brook Lopez said. "He just bodied up against me and tried to push me off the lane."

So while we got our asses handed to us against Memphis, a consolation prize is that Pittman will be a force next year and now Barnes knows it.

I hope you are right
I'm worried we might lose a couple guys to the draft, but it is exciting to think how solid we should be down low next season. With Conner back, Dexy, Wingman, Chapman, and Gary, there is a lot to be excited about.
With Conner's outside shooting, and ability to spread the defense, is there any chance we see Conner and Dexter on the floor at the same time? That would be interesting....

matt hill?
Couldn't hurt to have him back and healthy, too. He looked to be solid, especially on the rebounding end, last year.

Dex played well
and was a big part of the Stanford win. He leaned hard on Brook, frustrated him, and took him completely out of his comfort zone.
Great game by Dex.
I was certainly a little hard on Dex before the Stanford game, but I think I even acknowleged that I'd been hard on him all season and that it was unlikely to change.
MMHorns, I'll throw one more out there for you: Dex will not be a force next year. He will be much improved and should be able to provide 10-15 great bench minutes but a force he will not be.
Of the following big men, who will Pittman be ahead of one the depth chart?
Atchley: not a chance.
Johnson: no.
Hill: Barnes thought he would compete for a starting job this season before his injury. I doubt that but if Barnes is that high on him, he'll get some minutes.
Wingman: a better defender than Pittman now.
Chapman: a better offensive player than Pittman now.
Pittman will be a great role player next season and remain extremely valuable against certain teams and certain big men, but I'd be shocked if he becomes a force.

he he
old opinions break hard, and I understand you are grumpy from the Memphis game.
If Barnes keeps him on the bench and our guards never figure out how to feed the post you may be right, but you are (IMO) wrong about Chapman and 100% wrong on Wingman. Atchley is clearly the better player, but as I recall BON rightly labeled him "Bad Connor" his sophmore season.
I just hope for your sake Dex's Mama doesn't find out how hard you are being on him. You guys thought the OU Crying Kid's mom was a tough nut :-)

Right and wrong
While Chapman probably has a more polished offensive game than Dexter, you can't teach height and weight, and Dexter will always get the highest % FGs when he's in the paint. When he gets position in the paint, no one on the team will finish as efficiently as he does.
I disagree (and agree with AW) about Wingman though. You talk about force? That boy is going to be a defensive force next year.

I supported you in the earlier diary
because I think Dex is on a different developmental curve than most suppose, one different than most of his teammates, and I feel that between now and next season that curve is going to go exponential.
Dex completed the mission against Stanford, which is what I thought he could do and so posted in your earlier diary.
He has more ground to cover than most recruits, both the physical in reformation of his body, and his post skills, which were certainly minimal on both offense and defense when he arrived. I think this season opened his eyes to what his future can be and perhaps made him realize that despite all the work he has done to date, that and much more remains for him to accomplish serious goals on the basketball court.
The course in the basics is over. That has taken two long years. He still needs to get down to the 265-270 range as far as his body goes so that he can run and acquire real stamina. Now his attention and that of the coaching staff can turn to polishing. He can become a dominating player; the real key is his discipline, which, despite the outward amiable, boyish demeanor, he seems to have a great depth.
Consider your own first two years in school at UT and now add in what Dex has to undergo in addition to those challenges. That's a lot for a teenager.
I don't know if he can show results in a year or if it will take two, but his upside is amazing if he keeps progressing at the same rate. To me, the rest of the team has different trajectories, some which will only be completed in the NBA. Dex is talented, more so than many realize. I just can't lump him in with everyone else because I find it so obvious that one day he will make a quantum leap and realize some great part of his potential.
I say these words to encourage him in this solitary task. He's been hungry for two years and I think at some point his hunger will be directed at the world of basketball and we'll all benefit. I support the celebration of maturity and not a requiem for what might have been.

exactly
the jump between this year and his junior year has the potential to be ginormous.
Again, there is a long line of slim challenged college basketball players that were dominant despite there slowness: Big Baby, Andrew Jones (he killed us his sophmore and junior years), Big Country, Kevin Love etc.
There is also the x-factor of how a player like Dexter can wear down an opposing team's post players in ways that don't show up on a stat sheet. Just ask Brook Lopez.

Andrew Jones?
Do you mean Joseph Jones from aggieland?
I agree with you on the potential that he has. He looked good against Stanford, and can hold his own against bigger, slower competition. Hopefully, by losing more weight, he can keep up with the more nimble, athletic big men.
I saw Dex working for position down low, but DJ never fed him. I'm wondering if DJ didn't try to b/c he didn't think Dex could finish or if that wasn't the designed play. Either way, this has to change next year for us to diversify our offense. I think if we focus on it, we can become solid offensively down low.

ole' Joseph career day on the Horns Jones.
Maybe an opening day phonetical attempt at Andruw?
And yes, feeding Dexter on the post. Let the man eat!

I still think
that Dex reminds me of Andrew Bynum. Look how far Bynum has come since he was drafted.. Dex will be there one day, mark my words.

Bynum
never had a weight problem. He just had to learn how to play basketball, and he had Kareem Abdul Jabbar to help him. Dexter still has to work on his weight and stamina. Once he does that, then he'll have to focus on basketball fundamentals like defense.

sorry, but I don't think Pittman will ever become
a force on the court.
He simply doesn't have teh stamina to be more than a role player against certain types of post players.
It is too easy to run him into the ground.
