The roots behind the mutual Texas/Nebraska respect...
As a longhorns student and a former NU transfer, I have naturally been inclined to root for both teams.

(its always the horns when they play, of course) but I've always wondered where the widespread mutual respect these two programs have for each other has rooted from. Can anyone fill me in on how these programs seem to constantly have a healthy rivalry but such a strong respect for each other?

couple of things
- Nebraska fans are gracious people generally
- Texas usually beats Nebraska and never had to go through that Big 8 phase where everyone other than OU lost to NU by 40 points every year.
- Nebraska fans cheered Ricky after Texas won in Lincoln in '98.
Therefore, Texas fans have no reason to have anything but respect for Nebraska. Maybe you can enlighten us as to NU's feelings towards Texas.

My hat's off to...
The people/fans of Nebraska. I was at school in the '90s, when Texas was the only team to beat Nebraska 3 times. They were very, very good, and we were able to come away with those three wins, including the inaugural Big XII championship game, when just about nobody gave us a snowball's chance in hell of winning.
I was at the game in Austin in 1999, when #3 Nebraska came to town, and man let me tell you, I've never seen another team's fan travel as well as the Cornhuskers. They were absolutely the friendliest people around. Before the game, during the tailgating, I heard no ugly taunting nor "fuck you" nor saw any middle fingers or anything along those lines. I was invited to drink their beer and eat some corn-on-the-cob with them and I was happy to do so. They are genuine red-blooded Americans, and very respectful of other people. Even after the game, when we beat them 24-20 (in a great game to watch), they walked out of the stands with their heads held high and never told any Longhorns to go to hell or stick anything where the sun don't shine (which I've heard plenty in Dallas).
So to all the Cornhuskers out there reading this, my hat goes off to you.

Summarizing
2 fan bases with a high level of respect for the game, but without the god-complex.....or goat fucking.

NU people are classy people
I spend a lot of time outside of Texas and a number of times I've run into Nebraska fans while I'm wearing some UT gear and they're always nice and seem excited to meet fans of other teams.
In fact, one time I was at a restaurant (well, really a plastic picnic table on a beach in Door County, WI) with 8 other members of my family. My dad, brother, brother-in-law, and I were all wearing some sort of Texas gear and we ran into some Nebraska fans on the way to our table. Almost before we could sit down, they had bought our entire group our first round!
It's one example, but it explains why I will always give Nebraska fans the time of day.

Unique Perspective
I grew up a Texas fan, but went to Colorado. As a Colorado fan I am supposed to hate Nebraska, and for the day after Thanksgiving I can muster up a little hate.
But really, when you are at Colorado, and you see the CU fans are more interested in talking shit and throwing things on the field and at each other than the actual game being played (if they show up for the game at all), it is hard to have anything but envy for a fan base that travels so well, is knowledgeable about the game, and is respectful to the other team and fans.
Now Colorado St fans on the other hand manage to make CU fans look like Nebraska or Texas fans.

It may have started
with baseball. We've had to forward our mail to 1202 Bert Murphy Ave., Omaha, NE 68107 some 32 times out of the last 50 years.
All I remember reading was how great the Texas baseball teams were treated when they made the trip up.
Plus maybe some of that "enemy of our enemy" thing too.

Interesting Note
Ever since I read this diary, I've trying in vain to find an article written by a San Antonio Express News columnist named Mark Wranglin (SP)...about the formation of the Big XII.
What's interesting about it is that while the Texas and Nebraska fans may share a mutual respect for each other, the two Athletic Departments and more specifically the AD's, were constantly at odds when the Big XII was formed.
Everything from what grade/SAT qualifications recruits had to have in order to qualify to play for a Big XII team to where the Big XII Championship game would take place.
If anyone can locate this article, please post a link...it's really a fascinating read and presents a counter view to the love-fest we fans seem to feel.

Great article in Playboy
There was also a great article in Playboy about the formation of the Big XII and the fact that the AD's from Texas and Nebraska butted heads during the entire process. If I'm able to find it I'll post it.

Nebraska fans
Really, they are the best. Take, for instance, the treatment my family received in Lincoln, during the hours immediately following the Ryan Bailey field goal in 2006. There were a couple corny dipsticks flailing insults from afar, but the majority of the crowd was all pats-on-the-back congratulations. My dad and I walked down to the drinking area, the Haymarket, a short distance from campus. We were adorned in Texas gear, obviously giddy from the victory. Within five minutes of arriving at the bars, some dude we had not even spoken with sat down at the table next to us with four tall boys. He said, "Beers to the victor," and then we proceeded to drink and talk about football. It was a good afternoon.
Also, my mom and most of her family grew up/still live in Lincoln. They're enthusiastic and somehow, even in the most depressing moments of defeat, always positive.

Nebraska 2006
I drove up to Lincoln for the Ryan Bailey coming out party, and let me tell you, the fans there really do live up to the hype surrounding them. For any of you that were there that day, you know that it was cold. Very cold. One of the guys we were walking to the stadium with didn't have a jacket, and after offering us all some beer, a 'Husker fan offered to let my friend borrow his jacket. He simply requested that it be dropped off after the game. So my buddy took the jacket (it was not Nebraska apparel), wore it during the game, and gave it back to the guy on the walk back to the car.
There is no other fan base that would do that. None.
