The What If Teams of UT Basketball
I had this conversation the other day with Meekrob, but thought it was a good enough conversation piece to bring up here for some more opinions.
The question is, which would have been our best what-if team of the Barnes era?
The choices include, but are not limited to:

Your 2003 Texas Longhorns:
TJ, at 110% health and commitment stays for a Junior campaign. The Longhorns retain almost the entirety of the their final four team, and continue their off season development into a stellar 2003-04 year. The two best teams to come out of the field in this tourney were UConn and Georgia Tech.
Your 2007 Texas Longhorns:
Kevin Durant, one of the most special freshman to grace the college game elects to forgo millions in endorsements, and make a bid for a national championship. Texas is able to start 2 guards with Durant in the lineup, and our depth instantly increases by a huge leap, and one bound. The offense flows through the forwards instead of relying on the guards, and very very few teams can manage to stop Durant with just one player, which opens up Abrams, Connor, and DJ for the deep shots. Texas still has to compete with the freaks on Memphis and Kansas.
Your 2008 Texas Longhorns:
DJ Augustine, worried about his defense, combined with a strong sense of team, and a gentle educational push from his family, decides to stay for his Junior season. Our team looks exactly the same as this past year, only a year older, wiser, stronger, and with more depth at guard courtesy of the man named Dogus, this team becomes perhaps the deepest we have seen at Texas. Dexter drops another 20lbs, Wingman and Chappy improve their games and conditioning with a full off season with Todd. A new freshman or two also help to contribute in limited but meaningful minutes. The big 12 is decidedly weaker than last year, but as to the rest of the field, who knows.
Which team has the best chance of winning it all? Would LaMarcus's team have been better? Disagree with any of my summaries? Discuss! And support your argument.

For 2008, you forgot to mention
The supernatural power of Matt Hill's hair.
I voted for 2003-04 for a couple reasons. I still think the final four team was the best team I've ever seen at Texas, as well as the deepest. Also, as good as both Durant and DJ are, neither were as important to their respective teams as TJ was. I think with the maturation of everyone on that Final Four team, with TJ distributing the rock, and not having to play Melo, it would have been the most likely team to bring home a championship.

I was assuming
He'd grow it back. He's got to miss it, right?

What abou the 2006 Longhorn Squad
With Danny Gibson, Lamarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant, DJ Augustin, PJ Tucker, AJ, and the rest of those guys.
Could have been amazing. Just think even if Danny Gibson and PJ stay they still would have been great.
My write in vote

Agreed
I know this is the biggest "what if" of them all...but me and my friends still wonder just how good a team with that much talent could have been. Seriously look at that team and tell me how they would have lost a game. I know some of you will say, well Durant and/or DJ wouldn't have come here if some of the others weren't already gone but what the hell we can dream can't we???
DJ
Gibson
Durant
Tucker
LaMarcus
abrahms

True
But for simplicity's sake I was limiting it to just one players decision.
That for some reason seems more likely than counting on several people coming back.
You know, like that Gwyneth Paltrow movie where one decision changes her entire life!
Did I just reference Sliding Doors on a sports blog? Thats right I did.

I like your way
because it is actually possible. I don't think there would have been enough scholarships to create the ultimate 2006 squad. If we are going to do that, we might as well say TJ gets a 2 year redshirt for his neck injury and plays on the 2006 squad as well.

Watching the Rockets game last night
Announcers mentioned that CJ Miles would've been a JUNIOR had he attended UT. Yikes.

I can't believe
that the 2007 team that lost in the 2nd round was mentioned in the poll, and not the 2006 team that lost in the Elite Eight in overtime.

Huh?
I think you missed to object of the post. Neither of those teams are in the poll. In fact, no REAL team is in the poll, they are all "what if" teams if a star player had stayed.
Also, teams are usually talked about by the year that they started in, not that they finished. The 2007 team in the poll, is the 2007-2008 team that we just got done watching. The 2008 team, is the one that will start playing this November, 2008, and end in March of 2009.
