Horns in a Thriller With Okie State
Chance Ruffin has gone 9 innings, but Texas has only managed a Preston Clark solo homer. Right now the score is 1-1 heading to the bottom of the 9th. Ruffin threw only 91 pitches, gave up just the one run (it was earned), striking out six.
In other news, sounds like a number of players may be dismissed from the baseball team. This info comes straight from Orangebloods ($$$). We won't comment on it other than to acknowledge the rumor until we hear from Augie.
Update [2008-4-18 21:21:54 by 40AS]: Torres singles to start off the inning, tying UT's hitting streak record at 24. Danks pops up the bunt, so runner at 1st with 1 out.
Update [2008-4-18 21:23:54 by 40AS]: Moldenhauer singles up the middle and Torres moves up to 3rd. Runners on the corner still 1 out. Kawika Emsley-Pai in for his biggest ABs since the Stanford series.
Update [2008-4-18 21:27:25 by 40AS]: K E-P strikes out swinging. Kyle Russell will be intentionally walked to bring up Kyle Lusson. Lusson grounds out, we'll give a final update when the game's over.
Update [2008-4-18 22:10:05 by 40AS]: Horns give up a run in the top of the 11th and go in order in the bottom. It's a tough loss. If there's any good to come out of this it's that Chance Ruffin is awesome. 10 innings, 104 pitches, 6 hits, 1 run. Simply amazing.

A few questions...
- Why pinch-run for Moldenhauer with Rowe in the 9th? That run wouldn't have mattered, and Moldy could've faced a righty in the 11th instead of Tant.
- Why pinch hit Emsley-Pai for Rupp? Yeah, you get your righty-lefty matchup, but Rupp is leading the team in hitting and about .200 better than much-less-battle-tested K E-P.
Of course hindsight is always 20/20, and if these are stupid questions for reasons that I am unaware of, please feel free to make me aware.

The K E-P
It baffles me. It baffled me against Stanford and it baffles me today. All I can say is that Augie sees something we don't and Augie has roughly 1500 more college victories than I do. We're approaching the point where I get excited about next season's possibilities (they're big), which is a shame to waste Danks and Russell's final seasons.

Dismissals?
Is it a deal with orangebloods.com that you can't talk about specifics on here? It wouldn't surprise if there were some serious cancers on this baseball team. Is it some young players or is it the veterans.
I was just thinking that for all the veteran players on this team who have a chance to have major league careers, the baseball teams certainly haven't been good the last three years. This final stretch is the last chance for players like Russell, Danks, and Clark to prove that they aren't just individual talents, but players capable of leading a team to Omaha.
Speaking of leadership, if Chance Ruffin has to step up and ream the team out as a freshman, that doesn't say much for the fire the veteran players are instilling in their teammates. What an incredible performance, though. He will be a Friday starter for this team for two more years I believe. Unless Workman comes on. Ruffin's fastball has good downward sink, even while it doesn't have super-elite velocity (ESPNU was reading 89 consistently, around normal for major league sinkerballers). It's probably still a plus pitch though. And the curve. Downright nasty. Easily a plus pitch. And then some. The Longhorns have something here, folks.

Dismissals
There really aren't any details over on Orangebloods. I don't feel very comfortable dealing with any rumors until they are addressed by somebody with the program. My understanding of the rumors is that it's essentially the bottom half of the roster is being told that they are being let go and will have a chance to compete for a limited number of roster spots. Until there's something more specific though I don't see much utility of naming names in a rumor.
You're damn right about Ruffin. The last two weekends have sucked but Texas has a fine pitcher in Chance Ruffin. Texas may not be very good this year but the future is pretty bright with Ruffin, Thomas, Workman, Belt, Rupp, etc.

Details
Just saw this story over at Scout:
http://texas.scout.com/2/747718.html
"His solution? Garrido sat down with four team "representatives" (leaders) and, as a group, they assessed each player on the roster. In the end, the team representatives and Coach Garrido came out with a mutually agreed list of 24 players that would continue suiting up. The others would be on the "B" team.
Garrido stressed the fact that these were not team cuts, but rather a strategy to identify and create a more cohesive team core. Those on the B list are still entitled everything that comes with being a University of Texas baseball player: work out equipment, doctors, team meals, etc.
Coach Garrido met with the team at 3:15 today and revealed the list and strategy to his players (Skip Johnson took care of the pitchers). The A team suited up, the B team didn’t. Garrido expressed that it was not his place to go into the reactions of his players or explain which list players were on."
Augie is the zen master. He sees problems with his team and he's working to fix them.

Team Chemistry is Over-Rated
Obviously there is something wrong with the team, but I don't see how this will accomplish anything. Just how many were on the team anyway if he is only going to "suit up" 24 and still have others left over for a "B team"? If he cuts players with attitude problems or discipline problems, that may help, but to just "suit up" fewer, what does that do? Is there any reason to think a team of 24 will be more cohesive that a team of 28 or 30? I think the whole concept of team chemistry may be over-rated, especially in baseball which is very much a game of "individual" performances. It is not like you are a RB dependent on your line blocking for you or a QB dependent on a receiving making his best effort to catch your pass. The classic argument against the importance of team chemistry is the Oakland A's of the 1970's, aways fighting but winning.

Horns lose 8-7...
by giving up 3 in the top of the 9th. Brandon Workman got roughed up for 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning, but Stayton Thomas and Cole Green combined for 6 2/3 (I think) and only 1 run. Brandon Belt and Pat McCrory couldn't seal the deal in the 9th.
On a positive note, a big congratulations to Michael Torres on his UT-record 25th straight game with a hit.

Yup
Just a devastating loss today. Had no business losing, but was the type of loss you expect in a rebuilding year (which this very quickly is becoming). It's a shame to lose Danks and Russel's senior year, but the future is bright.

It makes me shudder to wonder this, but...
...are the Horns in danger of missing the tournament if they continue this slide? 40AS, I think you have a much better grasp of the national scene than I do and maybe I’m just overreacting, but as they continue to fall in the national polls it made me wonder where they stand among other at-large teams.

Horns give away another one 13-10
The bullpen struggled yet again giving up 8 runs and huge days from Jordan Danks and Kyle Russell were wasted. Danks went 4-4 with 3 doubles, a triple, and an incredible diving catch in right-center field. Russell hit a pair of 2 run homers. The Horns also committed 4 errors, and surprisingly, none were made by Michael Torres. Oh, Torres was the DH today, maybe that had something to do with it… Either way, his hit streak came to an end at 25 games, definitely something to be proud of.
OSU 1B Rebel Ridling also had a huge day. He hit 2 towering blasts and almost had a third, but it hit high off the Green Monster in center and he got a triple instead.

Forget about hosting a Regional
Do the Horns even make the post-season now?
Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.
