Bill Self - next Okie St coach??
A friend told me that Self is considering the Okie State coaching gig. Anyone hear/see anything along these lines?
That guy is a douchebag if he even CONSIDERS the job (well, I think he's a douchebag period). I know he's from the land of thieves but there aren't many gigs bigger than KU.
Self is the basketball version of Bobby Petrino - jumping ship at the drop of a hat.

how is he Petrino
He put in 4 years at Oral Roberts.
4 years at Tulsa (sweet 16 got him the Illinois job which he obviously had to accept)
4 years at Illinois (turned their program around and stockpiled them with talent for a near championship run the year he left)
Then took the kansas, one of the premiere jobs in America.
What's the problem? The guy's an incredible coach that every program would be blessed to have. If he's there, your program is going to either be turned around or taken to the promise land (Final four).
I'm not sure how I feel about his chances of leaving for OSU. There's several things to consider:
- It's not like Lawrence Kansas is some incredible palce to live compared to Stillwater. It may be a smidge better, but we're not talking about Austin vs. College Station
- Money talks.
- OSU has lots and lots of fan support and pride in their hoops program. Iba Gallager is not that far down the totem pole from Mr. Naismith. With the resrouces and commitment there, he can probably have OSU as a Final Four and title contender.
- If he loses to UNC, he's going to be in Roy Williams' shadow for quite some time. That's not fair considering the failures Williams had on the big stages.
- It's his alma mater. I don't care what you think of OSU and Stillwater. He holds a special affinity for the place, just like we all do for our respectvie alma maters. He met his wife there, played there, partied there, grew up there, etc. If he wanted to go back there, that's legitimate.
Theres no way you leave Kansas for OSU
Everyone things T Boone is going to throw the world at a bball coach, if thats the case, why is there a 40 year old man as head football coach, making only 900k million a year? Yes, thats 3/4th of new Baylor head coach Art Briles' salary. KSU may not go wild with salaries either, but they would pay some of the difference it would keep Self.
Theres no way you compare OSU fan support and resources to Kansas. Kansas Basketball rivals the most rabid and faithful fanbases out there, OSU does not.

resources
Fan support may not quite be the same, but resources are equal, if not in favor of OSU. I'm sorry, the coffers of KU aren't incredibly deep. It's a small state, small tax revenue, only recently a bunch of financial windfall from football, etc. The resources are a wash.
As for Gundy not getting paid. Well, he doesnt dserve it. That doesnt mean the money's not there if they had a bigger name/more seasoned coach. Just because the money's there doesnt mean you just throw it to any old dufus who's in place. That's just bad business. OSU will throw big bucks to their next football coach if they're able to get the guy they want. Kansas, will no, at least not in football. One of Mangino's assistants will likely take over, whereas the Mike Gundy regime will likely be ridded in its entirety.
You seem to be arguing in favor of tradition and prestige. I agree there's nothing quite like KU (outside of UK, UNC, and Duke), but that could be negated by the alma mater factor.

Gundy
I dont think he deserves it either. But if you asked the OSU faithful on who they want to throw money at to rip away from a successful program, I bet they would choose a Football coach over a Bball one. Financially you want football to be the most successful as well, to get a good return on your salary payments.
I just bring it up as an example that while they may have deep coffers, they have yet to show that they are willing to toss it to coaches.
Maybe they will for an Alum, but theres nothing to support that they will at this point.
Id also toss UCLA up there for tradition, but now Im just nitpicking =D

Lawrence
FYI, Lawrence as compared to Stillwater is almost exactly Austin vs College Station. Lawrence is a fantastic college town with a lot of fun things going on, a great outdoors scene including a river in the middle of town, and it's within 40 miles of Kansas City. Stillwater is...in Oklahoma.
petrino
Self's had 6 jobs since 1985 (including assistant positions; 4 head coaching gigs in the past 15 years)
Petrino's had 15 jobs since 1983 (3 head coaching gigs in past year).
This was reported a while back
The rumor about Self, that is. He denied any interest. I like Self, personally, and can't see any reason whatsoever for him to jump ship to OSU. As sandiego pointed out, the only conceivable reason might be a yearning to be at his alma mater. I've never been to Lawrence, but I hear good things -- not Austin good, but a damn sight better than Stillwater. But everybody's different; I can never for the LIFE of me understand how anyone can choose to live in College Station unless they are getting paid bazillions.
To springboard yourself
to Kentucky?

re: gillespie
Did yall also hear that Gillespie was being recruited to be their coach as well. I know it sounds ridiculous, but you never know w/ him.

Gillespie
I covered basketball this season and potential job openings among the coaching ranks are always a topic. Among coaches, it was common knowledge that Sutton would not keep his job and the popular speculation was that Pickens and OSU would be targetting Billy Gillespie and lure him a way from Kentucky. It's believed that even Gillespie does not feel he is the right fit at UK and would ultimately take the money offered by OSU.
Those coaches were right about Sutton's departure. Now we'll see about Gillespie.
Recent Interview
He seemed to be trying to avoid the questions. Stuff like "if they aksed, I would suggest they should probably go in a different direction" doesn't exactly scream "no".
Makes sense though -
I'd rather answer questions about the team I coached into the Final Four, and how I plan to beat UNC on Saturday. He'd be crazy to trade down like that.
Whatever happens
I wouldn't mind seeing OSU be damn good again. It was always a great matchup with Texas, did a lot for the conference, and gave us an ally against the annual KU juggernaut.
Definitely a Possibility
This couldn't come at a worse time for Self (ala Williams to Carolina in 2003). If you are Bill Self and OSU calls and offers $5 million a year to return to your alma mater, how do say no?
What we need...
... is Beergut to chime in with his insider-prediction. If he says he goes to OSU, then you can bet your ass he's staying at Kansas.
Lawrence, KS
I grew up in Lawrence. Graduated from Lawrence High and then went to UT.
I've often told people that Lawrence is like a little Austin. It's got about 100,000 people but still maintains a thriving music scene, and plenty of other cultural activities. It's also the liberal bastion of a very conservative state.
Anything Lawrence doesn't have can be found in Kansas City which is less than an hour away.
I don't know what Stillwater is like, but I'd guess Lawrence has it beat about as much as Austin does College Station.
Also, regarding coffers, at KU basketball is the money sport. Or at least it has been from the mid 90s until this last year. It's the sport that pays for all the womens athletics and for the other sports losses. KU's athletic facilities were built for the basketball team and Mangino actually had trouble with Williams because basketball players were using the gym while football was supposed to have access. Therefore, while the coffers at KU may not be incredibly deep, they'll dig deeper for basketball than most places will. Also, since when is Duke a traditional powerhouse in the league of KU, UNC, Kentucky and UCLA? Coach K's been great, but all the others have had more than one coach winning national championships or keeping the program elite year after year. Duke's final AP only got as high as 2, and that only 2 times, pre-Coach K.
duke
Is now forever going to be associated as one of the premiere, revered jobs in basketball. It need not be just from the past. That's just semantics though. There's plenty of old programs that were incredible back in the day that are irrelevant now. My alma mater (penn) is one of them. I wouldnt put them in any discussion about great coaching jobs just beacuse of the past. I'm referring to what coaches think now, and undeniably Duke is one of those programs.
could be right
Self to osu
If Sef leaves KU to go to osu, it'd be the worst move he'll ever make. I just don't see that happeing.
