Longhorn Undrafted Free Agents
A few undrafted 'Horns wasted no time finding employers. The Vikings continued their recent attempt at establishing themselves as Austin-north, inking free agent contracts with wide receiver Nate Jones and safety Marcus Griffin (think that Week 4 date in Nashville with brother Michael could have an added friendly sibling rivalry undertone to it?). Also, the Colts picked up CB Brandon Foster while DT Derek Lokey landed with J.C. in Kanas City.
A few other undrafted FA's of note: Tech wideout Danny Amendola to stay in North Texas with the 'Boys, Nebraska LB Steve Octavien to the Chiefs, Baylor LB Nick Moore to the Browns, OU's TE Joe Jon Finley to the Niners, K Garrett Hartley to the Broncos (where he could replace the immortal Jason Elam), CB Marcus Walker to the Vikes, Mizzou's RB Tony Temple and CB Darnell Terrell also to Cleveland and OL Tyler Luellen to the Chargers, KU fullback Brandon McAnderson to the Rams, and NCAA all-time leading rusher Chadron State product Danny Woodhead officially to the Jets (as mentioned by Trey Wingo during the closing stages of ESPN's broadcast).
Editor's note: Thanks for the update, WF. One thing we'll have to keep in mind is that any and all players are subject to cuts, as NFL contracts are not guaranteed. Best of luck to all the newest NFL Longhorn hopefuls, drafted or signed. --PB--

All's quiet on the Pittman front
As for my sources, simply my trusty Google Reader. The DMN and the Statesman both have Hornscentric stories out now you can find here and here respectively.

I did a little amateur sleuthing...
Besides the aforementioned Amendola, the only other undrafted signee up to this point is Hampton defensive end Marcus Dixon. Although it looks like Jerry and co. have designs on signing in upwards of 13 to 14 more rookie FAs. I’ll keep y’all posted as I hear about it.

I had no idea 54b was Pro Fighter!
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.
Is it football season YET?

Update: Cowboys & Texans Undrafted Free Agent Acquisitions
Add TE Drew Atchison from William & Mary, P Jay Ottovegio from Stanford, G Brandon Hale from Sam Houston State, Okie State’s FB Julius Crosslin, DE Darrell Robertson from Georgia Tech, and WR Daniel Polk, a QB convert from Midwestern State into the undrafted free agent/tryout mix for the ‘Boys. For those bleeding Battle Red out there, the Texans have come to terms with LB Ben Moffit from USF, one of Colt Brennan’s targets at Hawaii receiver Ryan Grice-Mullins, LB Marcus Richardson of Troy, TE Cole Bennett from Auburn, CB Josh Bell from Baylor, WR Darnell Jenkins from The U, DE Jesse Mading of Colorado State, and DT Gabe Long from Utah.
Still no word on Billy Pittman unfortunately. Also of note, one time Oklahoma State QB Donovan Woods signed to play LB for the Pittsburgh Steelers. You don’t see that transformation every day.

jamaal charles
so jamaal charles passes up another year in austin, and if he held on to the ball could make a serious run at the Heisman Trophy to be picked 73RD in the draft.
sounds pathetic to me.
i’ll have to buy another jersey!

Don't understand this
Second comment I’ve seen from a BON’er ragging on Charles.
Seems petty to me.
I wish him the best.

I understand the frustration with JC
The difference in first round money and third round money is huge. If he would have stayed another year, he would have had a better O-line to run behind. He likely would have improved his stock to at least be a first day pick. Depending on the season that he would have had, who knows.
Still though, ragging on JC is moot at this point – that ship sailed, dead horse, 20/20 hindsight, or any other cliche that you want to thow in.

Frustration, sure
But there’s a difference between pointing out that he might not have made the best decision, and sort of shoving him out the door as he leaves. He gave Texas three brilliant years, which shouldn’t be discounted because he unwisely didn’t stay for a fourth.
That’s my opinion, anyway. Others may feel differently.

Best of luck in the NFL!!!
It would have been great to have him back for his senior year. I’m sure if he had come back and stayed healthy it would have been an unforgettable and record breaking year for him. But nothing about his current situation sounds “pathetic” to me, not by a long shot.
I've been fuelin' my dreams eatin' greens and beans.

Let's see...
4-time track All-American, Big XII Champion, National Champion, All-Big XII, undefeated in the post season. I get it that he reneged on his word to return, but so did T.J. Ford and VY, and while J.C. is obviously nowhere near that class, those 2 were anything but crucified for making the decisions that they ultimately did. The days of Ricky’s, Cedric’s, Roy’s, and DJ’s are behind us; the Matt Leinart’s and A.J. Hawk’s of the world are the exception as opposed to the rule. It’s probably best to just wish J.C. the best, be excited he landed in a good position to see some serious playing time in K.C. (Priest Holmes faired pretty well with the same organization after initially facing an uphill battle on the depth chart), and hope the Horns are “unfortunate” enough to be in position to have a game breaking tailback great enough to have to seriously consider leaving the 40 Acres early in the not too distant future.

A 3rd round pick isn’t all bad. He’s looking at about 600-700k to sign, 500k or so workout bonus and 400k a year, with a total value coming in the 700-800 a year total value on a 3-4 year deal. (FYI basing these numbers approximately off Dusty Dvoracek(DT) deal last year as 73rd with the bears)
Then the good part, he’ll be an an unrestricted free agent under a new CBA, at 25-26, which WILL have a higher salary cap, if indeed the NFL retains a hard cap, and likely no Franchise rights to deal with. He’ll be a free agent a year or 2 before he would have as a 1st rounder, and will have a good chance of making up a lot of lost earnings as a mid-late rounder.
At that point he’ll be in line for inflation and cap adjusted Michael Turner money, if not more, and will have some choice in where he goes.
So JC will do all right. Do I wish he’d come back? yeah, but when I was 21 if somebody had offered me a 700k a year gig you can bet your ass I wouldn’t be taking finals right now.

700k is nice
But its not set you up for life money, which first round money could have been.
I hope hes successful and his draft spot wont matter. If hes not, then it would have been better for him to be in a better position to be drafted higher.

True
My point was more that he’ll do all right, and that he has nothing to be ashamed of being a 3rd round pick.
He gave us some great years, helped bring a MNC and was one of the most exciting players in UT history. If he decided that he wants to be paid well now, rather than wait for a chance of being filthy rich now, I’m not going to fault him for it

Yes...
Plus you have to factor in the injury risk and breaking down that backs endure. Playing careers are short lived at that position (4.5 years or so), and they need to take advantage when they can. I can see J.C. making an impact with the Chiefs as a nice compliment to Larry Johnson. Does he have things to work on…..obviously, ball control, blitz pickup, and catching the ball out of the backfield, but those are things the NFL “coaches up” anyway. I just hope Mack carries over “the best players play” theme we had in San Diego. I’m sure a talented back will emerge prior to the fall.
