Kinne to transfer

Guess this is no big surprise.  Here's the link.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas redshirt freshman QB G.J. Kinne has elected to transfer, he confirmed Friday. Kinne will depart the Longhorns program after one season, but has not yet determined where he will transfer.

"I chose the best school at what was the end of a very successful, but difficult high school career," Kinne said. "I have definitely become a better quarterback with the help of one of the most knowledgeable offensive coaches in college football, Greg Davis. However, the quarterback position is unique in terms of playing time, and I have to find a program that best fits my skills.

"Quarterbacks transfer in college football. That’s life for this position. I’ve made great memories, great friends and have been blessed with experiences most can only watch. So the answer is, ‘No,’ I have no regrets. I’m looking forward to what the future holds for me. I wish nothing but great things for The University of Texas. I appreciate all that Coach Brown and The University have done for me."

Kinne, a graduate of Gilmer High School in Gilmer, Texas, was a valuable member of the Longhorns’ scout team offense during his redshirt season in 2007. He was a two-time 3A Offensive Player of the Year at Gilmer and finished his prep career ranked second in Texas high school history in passing yards (11,695) and second in TD passes (130).

"G.J. is a great young man and has added a lot to our program in his time at Texas," Brown said. "Even though we hate to see him go, we understand he wants to play. We wish him lots of luck and will continue to follow his progress."

not to take anything away from him...

He seems solid (maybe another colt), but he was sort of a throw in at the end of the 07 class when Brantley switched his commit to florida.  I have nothing against his decision, who knows if he'd ever have seen serious PT, especially with Gilbert on the way.

Yeah

I think perhaps he thought he had a shot over Harris/Chiles to take over after McCoy, but once Gilbert committed, I think he saw the writing on the wall.  Can't blame him really.  Honestly, I can't understand why he de-committed from Baylor in the first place.  He's really regretting it now I bet, with Art Briles coaching.

Spots needed......

With only 12 spots to give and 17 recruits committed, you had to see it coming. Yet another baby bird pushed out the back of the nest.

We still need to sign another QB next season.

Even with Gilbert, Colt will be a senior when the class of 2009 takes field.  Since the Colt/Sherrod/Jevan year, we now only have 1 scholarship QB on the roster (Chiles) and he may or may not ever actually start at QB here.  He's shown flashes as a runner, but has really struggled in the air.

Say Colt/Chiles becomes Chiles/Gilbert and vice versa.  We are one Gilbert injury (knock on wood) away from total chaos.

I would also argue that this new habit of highly touted (and even somewhat touted like Kinne) Qb's transferring once it becomes inevitable they will never start at a major program will greatly contribute to the ever growing strength of "mid majors" and BCS cellar dwellers. 10 years ago it seems like a Kinne type kid would be happy to ride the pine at a UT or LSU or whatever and maybe get a ring or two, take some knees, hold some clipboards.  But now, they are transferring to less stellar programs and getting on the field.  Off the top of my head, here are some examples...

  1.  Josh Portis (From Florida to Maryland)
  1.  Demetrius Jones (From Notre Dame to Cincinnati)
  1.  Jevan (UT to Ole Miss)
  1.  Tommy Grady (OU to Utah, but as far as I can tell hasn't taken off there)
  1.  Rhett Bomar to Sam Houston (he lead them to two straight national titles, and should be a first round pick)

Okay threw in Bomar for kicks...  Anyway, there are some once highly regarded guys now playing at not-so powerhouses next season.  Chances are their teams will still kinda suck next year, but if one of them becomes the 2008 Boise State anchored by one of these transfers, I'll look like a genius.

I think the mid-majors do better with their own

kids.

Not to say I disagree with your theory, b/c it has some merit, but I think mid-majors experience more success with kids who may have been looked over by the powerhouses, came to their school, and have had four years to develop in their program.
The success the MAC has had developing pro QBs like Chad Pennington, Bruce Gradkowski, Ben Roethlisberger, et al, is a good example.
I don't remember many of these kids who transfer for more playing time really blowing the doors off somewhere else after they transfered.
However, if you are going to leave, the time to do it is after your freshman year.

Kinne

I don't know why he came to UT. He should have stayed at Baylor. He would be starting right now if he went to Baylor.

And doesn't his dad coach there? Oh well, I hope

he does alright wherever he ends up.

There is.....
....a pretty fair chance he ends up at LaTech.

Personally, I was hoping he would look into Oregon. His dad took a high school position in Fresno on the left coast.
