VY redshirted, JC didn't...

A lot of us have criticized Chiles passing ability (or lack there of) as a true freshman.  VY had a whole year to get into the system, Chiles didn't.  How much does a redshirt year help as far as quarterbacking I wonder.  Also, did Chiles have a strong arm in HS and just hasn't shown it, or is he too raw for anyone to know yet?

Also, we talk a lot about how bad a passer Chiles is, but we tend to forget how mediocre the passing game was as a whole (receivers, O-line, playcalling) in 2007.  Would VY have torn it up like he did when he debuted had he been given a shaky O-line, and decent but not explosive receivers?

VY had Benson, Roy williams, Limas Sweed, a veteran O-line throughout his career.  All Chiles has gotten to work with is Mcgee (good, but unproven), freshman and true freshman receivers, a lousy o-line and every other play called is a draw or handoff.

I guess what I'm asking for, aside from general comments is your current opinion regarding Chiles.  Can he be good, great, dare I say Vince Young-esque?  okay, forget the last part, nobody will ever be VY.

VY was always a QB. Chiles was primarily a WR who played a lot of QB his senior year. I think that matters a lot more than the redshirt year.

I agree

I’m glad somebpdy is looking at the big picture. Colt McCoy (the passer) didn’t have a great year either. He had good stats, bad no results. Stats don’t mean anything in college football. Chiles needs times, and he will be fine.

Vince

only became VY AFTER Cedric and Roy left. Bad comparison there, IMHO.

You are right on the O-line though.

JC

Chiles looked lousy throwing the ball during spring practice just running drills. Slow release, not alot of velocity on the ball, wobbly spiral, no accuracy. His passes looked a little better in the Orange-White game, tighter spiral, ect., but his accuracy was still piss-poor. Vince worked hard on his passing game between his sophomore and junior year, and it showed on the field.

you seem to forget that

until halfway through his redshirt sophomore season, people were talking about moving Young to wide receiver, especially after the ‘04 Missouri game.
