My TV rant

My current life commitments completely and totally preclude any live TV watching.

Except for sports.

The catch? To watch all the Texas games this past season, I had to purchase not just Tier 2 of the cable package to ensure I got Fox Sports, but Tier 3 to ensure I also got Versus. In essence, I’m shelling out some $80 a month for 500 channels, about five of which I actually watch. Add in the ESPN football and college hoops packages and I could buy a car with all the money I spend on freaking cable.

As a further aside, I do manage to watch quite a few TV shows I’m interested in, but always after the fact when they’re out on DVD, a format I’ve rather grown to enjoy.

Summer Viewing

1. Weeds (Showtime)
2. Burn Notice (USA)
3. World Series of Pop Culture (VH1)
4. Californication (Showtime)

I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.

Wow

Haven’t even thought about summer shows yet. Weeds for sure, although without Showtime, I’ll have to wait for the torrent delay. And World Series of Pop Culture is enjoyable.

Without Braves baseball on TBS, I’m not sure I’ll be watching too much baseball this summer, though…

I’m also looking to start either BSG or The Wire on DVD.

Deadliest catch

Deadliest Catch is my #1, EASY.

Has anyone caught any of the new Man vs. Wilds? They took out the whole “survival” concept and now it’s just him doing crazy stuff without any pretense of having to survive. I know the survival concept is a bit contrived when you have a camera crew with you, but just lie to me, you know?

When does the new season of Entourage come on?

That's why Survivorman rocks

That dude is out on his own, carrying 50 lbs of camera gear all by himself and still surviving.

The other show that I watch inordinate amounts of (and also stars a Canadiense) is “Holmes on Homes”. Watching that guy tear entire houses apart, bitch about the injustice of it all, and rebuild them (mostly the tearing down part) is good TV in my book. But I’m sorta weird.

So take that.

You should watch Survivorman

Les Stroud’s a pretty cool dude, especially considering he’s from Canada (sorry Canadian Horns). He writes all the music for the show, films it himself without a crew, and is just much more enjoyable that hearing Bear Grylls constantly telling you how “Just thuh-ty yeahs agow, a hikah was on a mountainside just like this one, and rocks fell on his head, and he was killed. So you’ve gawt to be really caih-ful, and you should nehvah get into a situation like this one. But if you do…”

Kahuna agreed with me as I was typing this.

I love the fact that by the end of the week, Les is usually just laying there complaining about how he doesn’t have any energy, but he has to keep filming for the show. Hilarious. Much better, IMO, than watching Bear say “nevuh do this!” and then take off running down a mountain.

Survivorm

The Survivorman vs. Man vs. Wild is a pretty common argument but I feel like they’re two different types of shows. To me, Survivorman gets boring. Go out in the middle of nowhere, exist for a while, barely scrape by, I get it. Man vs. Wild does way cooler things to survive, even though the show isn’t as authentic. I don’t think it’s fair to fault Man vs. Wild for having a camera crew going along with him. They’re going for a different kind of show, and that’s why the two shows can coexist on the same network.

Anyway, I’ve liked Man vs. Wild up until the African episode two weeks ago. During that episode, I could almost hear the producers say “eat more weird bugs. People LOVE weird bugs.” Lo and behold, part of his narration went something like “now I’m going to go to the fahrest to eat WHATAVA I can find.” That was lame.

Deadliest catch is still the best program on that channel, though.

Has anyone seen those videos of Mike Rowe doing QVC back in the day?

summer tv

I’d rather catch up on shows I’ve missed out on entirely so far by renting them. These consist of Friday Night Lights and The Wire. Plus you can’t go wrong with Deadliest Catch, Survivorman, and reruns of The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock.

Also, I’m kinda looking forward to new episodes of My Boys. It’s too girly for some guys, but there’s a large sports aspect and some of it is pretty funny.

TV

Catching up and watching new seasons of Weeds and Californication are tops on my list this summer. I’d also like to start rewatching Lost. And if I have time start BSG.

Lost

Seconded on Lost. Season 4 is phenomenal. I daresay it’s the best show on television (especially with The Sopranos, The Wire, and BSG ending—admittedly haven’t watched the last two, but just going on reviews).
