Mack and JoePa
Obviously, i'm a Longhorn fan, and I have a ton of respect for Mack, as a football coach and a person. I also currently go to Penn State, and JoePa has really grown on me. His house is right near the law school, and I see him pretty frequently leaving his house - he never fails to wave and flash a smile.
Point being, I read that JoePa was flying to Austin on Friday to have dinner with Mack (in the espn article about Joe going to the hospital yesterday). I have heard random tidbits here and there over the years about how they were friends, but was wondering if some of you could shed some light on their relationship. Did they coach together at some point? Just mutual respect between great coaches?

They're basically the same coach...
... you’ll see.

Mother of God
If this is true, then Mack will coach another 40 years and at least one BON commenter will commit seppuku before the decade is up.
So take that.

for them to be the same coach
Mack would have to do something to revolutionize the way defense is played at all levels
I don’t see Mack ever inventing a new defensive (or offensive) scheme that will revolutionize football, particularly doing it as a head coach.
To say Mack and Joepa are the same coach is an insult to Paterno.
Paterno has left his mark on the game of football and college football in particular; Mack is basically just another Phil Fulmer.

This is why he is coming...
From mackbrown-texasfootball:
AUSTIN, Texas—A dinner honoring University of Texas football coach Mack Brown for his dedication to leadership on and off the field will be held Friday, May 16, at 7 p.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel. Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno will give the keynote address, and former pro football great and sportscaster Lynn Swann will emcee the event. The dinner will benefit The Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs. The Mack Brown Chair will be part of the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at The University of Texas, a university-wide global affairs research center named after renowned lawyer and public servant Ambassador Robert S. Strauss.
I've been fuelin' my dreams eatin' greens and beans.

wow
The event honors Mack, Lynn Swann is the emcee and JoePa is the keynote. Damn, that’s some football greatness in the same room.

Mack brown
built up this program from nothing, Fulmer was given a great Tennessee team and took it down from something great to an average team. Mack is a better coach and a more respectable person than Fulmer.

JoePa
Rarely have I pulled for his teams through the years – but my respect for JoePa has grown tremendously at the same time. Discipline, educated athletes, tenacious defenses who continue to hit you until the whistle blows.
If Mack Brown aims ultimately to emulate JoePa I think that is a laudable goal. I can’t think of a long term coach better for Mack to model himself after.
