Texas Baseball at A&M: Game 2
This will become your Game 2 recap once the 'Horns finish up in CS tonight (Knock on Austin Wood). For now though, here's what's up. You can follow the game yourself here .
- Texas goes up 4-2 in the top of the 6th when Kyle Russell goes yard for two runs. I peed a little.
- Preston Clark picks up where Kyle left off in the top of the 7th with a bomb of his own, 'Horns up 5-2 again.
- Defense has been spectacular tonight, again. Belt started another nice 3-6-1 DP recently. Gotta love the kid!
- Same score now in the middle of the 8th. Russell got on with a single, then Belt was robbed by A&M's first baseman, who snagged a would be RBI line drive and stepped on the bag for the double play to end the inning. Would have been nice, but let's hold on here
- Top of the 9th now, Austin Wood is still bringing the nasty, as he got the 'Horns out of the top of the 8th 1-2-3.
- Texas threatens again in the top of the 9th with runners on the corners and one out, but another great double play by the Aggies keeps the game close. Austin Wood back on the mound to finish his business. 108 pitches and counting, Aggies' 4-5-6 hitters up.
- Just as I'm clicking publish, Danks makes a diving catch to save an extra-base hit. One out. Danks, by the way, has been all over the field today. More on that later.
- After Aggie 1B Anders doubles, Austin strikes out a pinch hitter for out 2.
- Belt grabs a pop up in foul territory for the win! What a game by Austin Wood! This is a whole new team, Longhorns! Here we come, postseason!
Add what you will below.
[Note by Horn Brain, 05/18/08 3:29 AM CDT ] Sunday's game will be live on FSN Southwest at 1pm. Big Bird is hoping to pitch us into our first sweep of the year. Ought to be a good game. Box score from game 2 is in the tags, below.

Do you think we are poised to make a deeper run then it seemed early in the season? and doesnt this clinch the lonestar showdown?

showdown
probably means we tie. we’re at 8.5 to 8.5 with outdoor track finishing up tomorrow. their women should beat ours, while our men should beat theirs.

Re: Tourney
This team is rounding into form at just the right time. Well, actually as late as possibly acceptable. The froshies are starting to play like sophs, sophs like juniors, etc. I also hear something like all of Augie’s best postseason teams limped through the regular season. Any way you look at it, this is good stuff for the Longhorns.
Now let’s get out there tomorrow and ruin someone else’s season for a change. I think if we win tomorrow Okie State can claim the XII regular season title (well, the same way we claimed the basketball reg. season title) by finishing off OU, then we’ll play Mizzou followed by Okie State. The team that scored 31 on us followed by the team that swept us at home. I like it. Let’s get some reven-ption.

LSS
If Texas wins the men’s track point, Texas wins the LSS by default (tie goes to the previous year’s winner). A&M will most definitely win the women’s point, since Texas didn’t send a full team for the women’s meet.
As for the tournament, Texas looks like they have put the pieces together for a decent run. They are playing as well as anyone in the conference right now, and I think in the NCAAs, there’s probably no one who wants to see the Horns in their regional. I still don’t think they’re Omaha caliber, but they’re coming a lot closer with each game.
Keith Moreland said after tonight’s game that if Texas wins tomorrow, there is still a decent chance that the Horns get a regional host, though more likely as a 2-seed than a 1.

Tourney
We’ve said all along that this team has the pieces to make an Omaha run. This series win could sow up a 2 seed, possibly even hosting in Austin (more likely with a sweep and strong Big XII tourney showing). Most importantly, the team has a deadly Friday starter and if KK, Austin Wood and Cole Green are pitching like they have of late, this team can be deadly. Plus the defense appears to be coming around, although we’ve said that before.
More thoughts in the series recap…here’s to Big Bird completing the sweep.
