Mt. Rushmore: Austin Drinks

In order to get us properly stoked for the long Memorial Day weekend, I present the latest Mt. Rushmore incarnation: the 4 best drink locales in Austin.

Previous iterations include Austin eats (also, Barking Carnival's got a great BBQ discussion going on here) and UT football stars (PB's got a nice expansion of this topic as well here).

As always, please keep in mind there are no wrong answers, only personal opinions.

Mexican Martinis at Trudy's: Heard some complaints in the last post, but I'm still of the opinion that these can't be beat. I recommend upgrading to at least the Cazedores anytime, but go on Top Shelf Tuesdays for a free upgrade to any premium tequila. Also, ever since I started working, I've wanted to give the Patron one a whirl.  Shiner drafts are also only $2.75 (I believe they used to be $2 just a year ago).

Pitchers at Hole in the Wall: My dive bar of choice, it's got a wide selection of beers, good (if interesting) live music, and free shuffleboard in the back. Plus, it's just a walk from West Campus.

Irish Car Bombs at The Library: It ain't The Library at ASU, but this one isn't bad either. Their irish car bombs have expedited many a night for me on 6th, so this one zooms to the top of my list.

Cocktails at Cuba Libre: My Warehouse District venue of choice. I'm not a rum drinker, so I'm probably missing out on all the best stuff here, but the atmosphere and waitstaff are great. The drinks are on the pricey side, but they feel so good once they hit your lips.

That's 4; I'm definitely missing a lot more, but I'm sure y'all can fill in the blanks.

Bonus points...Preferred food of choice: On 6th: Best Wurst. Off 6th: Denny's on I-35 right across campus (also really good for weekday studying).

Thoughts? Opinions? Lists?

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

I mostly drink beer.

But, Manhattans at the Belmont,
Rita’s at Baby A’s,
Martini’s at the Cedar Door,
Shiner anywhere (not my favorite beer, but to keep it “Austin”).

My picks in no particular order

1. Shiner pitchers at Deep Eddy Cabaret
2. Any pitcher at Crown & Anchor at about 5 p.pm.
3. 64 oz Mugs of Dos XX at Logan’s
4. Michelada at El Chile on Manor Road

KSK

The KSK gang has their own cocktail commenter draft going on as well.

My personal favorite? Everclear and Lemon Lime Gatorade. Yowza.

Easy deal...

I only drink my Lone Star Longnecks at

Dry Creek Cafe

And don’t piss Sarah off, whatever you do. (she knows people!)

Hmmm

1. Draught House – Best pure beer drinking joint in Austin en mi opinion
2. Happy Minutes at Showdown – RIP
3. Any of the bars on Sixth St. that used to make flaming drinks, particularly Flaming Dr. Peppers
4. Schultz Beer Garten

So take that.

Flaming DPs

Cheers Shot Bar still makes them.

I’ve got some good videos of them being made.

by afaeguy on May 27, 2008 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Good to hear

Last time I went there, they told me they weren’t allowed to make them anymore. Which didn’t surprise me, because the previous time I had been there to have one, I actually set one of my own fingers on fire.

Then again, maybe I’m misremembering. It could be that they told me that I couldn’t drop the flaming shot into my own drink, due to self-immolation issues, which I decided was a travesty and not the real Flaming Dr. Pepper experience. Either way, hooray for flames and alcohol!

So take that.

Last time I went we had to go to 3 of their bars and finally found one outside and upstairs where the guys would actually do it. Apparently they are no longer allowed to do them indoors for fire safety reasons.

Agave

I think Agave makes good Flaming Dr. Peppers. I could be mixing up my bars, though.

how to choose?

The “New Mexican Martini” at Chuy’s
Pitchers at Crown and Anchor
Drinks on the roof at Mohawk, with or without a great band playing
The backyards and front porches of friends’ houses, while grilling

by crocodile235 on May 24, 2008 10:00 AM CDT reply actions

I'll give a go

1) Draught House- Drinking good beer makes you better at darts. Great beer joint
2) Pitcher at Posse East- Especially a free birthday pitcher.
3) Cedar Door/Street Martini’s
4) Any of the drink specials at El Arroyo after a long day.

Gone but not Forgotten:

Showdown Happy Minutes
The Lounge on 4th (now something else) – Maker of the “LBJ” Martini. One part Beefeater gin, one part J&B scotch and a twist of lemon. A real eye opener.

Mine

1. 99 cent margaritas at Martin Bros. The wait staff would usually be so stoned that you’d get a couple for free.
2. Pint night at Crown.
3. Guinness night at Dog and Duck.
4. Happiest hour at Billy’s on Burnet.

Honorable mention: When the prof was buying at Scholz’s Bier Garten while getting hammered with a bunch of the state politicians.

Birthday mention: Hitting the grand slam at the four Trudy’s on my birthday. I was told I had a good time.

Trudy's

Trudy’s blows. The drinks are expensive and weak, the service is terrible, and the sitting is abysmal for groups larger than 6.

The hype around their Mexican Martinis is a product of three things:
1.) Giving them out free on peoples’ 21st
2.) Their 2 martini limit (omg powerful!)
3.) Girls getting wasted off their Martinis when in fact one Michelob Ultra would accomplish the same goal.

Give me a $6.50 pitcher of Shiner at Crown and I am happy.

by whoopspat on May 24, 2008 4:28 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Haha

Touche. And I think you meant Michelob Light, because it’s obvious the Ultra packs too much of a punch.

by jc25 on May 25, 2008 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I do eat and drink at Trudy’s on occasion, but their mex martinis are weak. For 8 dollars a drink, I expect more.

by Texas Our Texas on May 26, 2008 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh

Those bigass beers at Logan’s are always a good way to punctuate a night of overindulgence on sixth.

by whoopspat on May 24, 2008 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

Sadly

Logans has really gone down hill. Where it used to be a cool place to be, it is now just as loud as any dance club on 6th with the crappy music always at full volume, causing hearing loss. I do love the ginormous beers though.

by Texas Our Texas on May 26, 2008 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Does the drink matter as much as the locale?

I’ve had margaritas at Baby A’s, Z Tejas, et al, and while I’m a man who enjoys me a well made margarita, for me it’s really the where at and who with that makes or breaks any sort of Austin drinking engagement.

I’ll honestly keep it simple: I’ll take a pitcher of Fireman’s #4 or Fat Tire at The Tavern (which I’ll put at 5/2 odds of yours truly being at each and every Sunday this fall assuming KEYE continues to operate as the third world broadcasting station that they are and continue to, oh I don’t know, NOT broadcast a Texas based professional team they once claimed to the official station of) or the Drafthouse taking in a flick.

Why are half the things on my Mt. Rushmore always closed?

Red Rocket – The Back 40 (Closed)
Long Island Iced Tea – Buffalo Club/Colorado Room (Closed)
Gameday Beam & Coke – warm Jim Beam from a floppy flask mixed with a coke in a DKR souvenir cup with melted ice on a lovely 100+ degree Saturday afternoon.
Natural Light/Keystone Light - Frat house beer trough

I've been fuelin' my dreams eatin' greens and beans.

drinkin

maybe a more specific drinkin category is needed. ie best place for beers, best selection of beers, best pitchers, strongest drinks, best tasting etc.

coldest beers HAVE to be at deep eddy cabaret and one of the best atmospheres to really drink. great jukebox. i don’t see this place being there in 5 years. enjoy it.

i gotta throw in showdown. i was there sunday and saw the spot on the ceiling where me and a group of friends signed it one night. there aren’t many places you can do that anymore.

i love getting ptichers at crown and anchor and the possee before baseball games. you can get just about any beer there. a buddy of mine came out with a pitcher of duffs one time.

caine and ables gets honorable mention from me because of CHEAP drinks. dollar beer tuesdays and sunday 2 dollar you holler make it easy to get lit for cheap.

strongest drinks i ever had in austin was at egos. the place still stinks of pall mall smoke but i had a lot of liquor in that bar that i know was more than a standard poor. it is now “soco’s” only karioke bar. thank goodness for that.

and the buffalo club and colorado room? seriously? thats a blast from the past.

...and ou still sucks.

Tiniest Bar In Texas

Tiniest Bar In Texas is the way to go. 817 W 5th right by the downtown Whole Foods. Nice prices on drinks and good people. The place reminds me of Austin 15 yrs ago(I guess I’m showing my age).
