Cedric Pepper Sprayed
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3380764
Wow. Ced keeps making his case to be the official Longhorn black sheep.
This is both sad and familiar, as I have both seen and heard of Cedric acting like a complete ass on the lake.
I would say it was probably a Sooner law enforcer, but I think more than a few of us have wanted to pepper spray Cedric in the past couple years.

Dumbass
From CBS Sportsline:
AUSTIN—Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson faces criminal charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.Authorities say Benson was operating a 30-foot boat carrying about 15 passengers on Lake Travis on Saturday when he was stopped, then failed a field sobriety test. Officials say an officer had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson.
Travis County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Roger Wade says Benson was freed from jail on a $14,500 bond Sunday morning.
The 25-year-old Benson was the Bears’ first-round pick in 2005 after starring at the University of Texas.

The Big Lead picks up the story...
Bad for so many reasons..
1. The Bears just drafted a guy to push Ced and probably replace him.
2. No sports news right now (save the NBA playoffs), so this will be all over PTI and ESPN all week….

doubt it
Nobody really thinks that much of Benson as a player. With the NBA playoffs as good as theyve been and with the Marvin Harrison incident, I think this will just be a minor news blurb more or less.

Just curious
I’ve never owned a boat. What do you generally do for a boat party? Is there always a designated driver?
by Texas Wahoo on May 4, 2008 2:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
no
Boaters are pretty irresponsible. Spend All day in the sun getting hammered. I dont think it warrants going to jail personally, but there should be some sort of penalty. But generally, no, there’s no DD, at least with young people. DUnno about older folks.

what a moron
I am impressed his breaking and entering charge was plead down to misdemeanor trespassing; must have some good lawyers.
He is just making it easier for the Bears to cut his ass.

"Random" safety inspection
It is interesting that the boat was stopped for a “random” inspection, so there is no indication that Cedric was speeding or driving the boat in a reckless and haphazard manner. Did the “river cops” know who they were stopping? Were they Aggies looking for trouble? How many boaters were stopped that day for “random” inspections? Did they do a breathalyzer? (Apparently not since the results would likely have been stated.) By and large I am a supporter of the police, but I also know that they have ways of defusing a tense situation and also ways of provoking a situation, especially if dealing with a allegedly inebriated young adult male in front of his friends. Lets give Cedric the benefit of the doubt at least until we know more.

if youve got a large group, youre gonna get stopped
i dont know if cedric had a big group, but thats the easiest thing to spot for the lake cops. if there’s 12 people on a boat, they’ll pull you over just to make sure you have enough life jackets, then they’ll let you go (assuming you dont get all belligerent) . I’ve never been in a boat thats been pulled over with only 3 people.

The Cedric Benson apologist side...
As you may know, I’m a big Benson fan despite the obvious NFL failures he’s had. I’m thinking Benson probably did do a little imbibing in his free time, but Austin police have also known to be notorious hardasses when it comes to the alcohols. Not that BWIs are anything to joke about. I’m guessing he’ll eventually plea out, and do quite a few hours of community service.
Anyways, Benson’s side:
“I was not intoxicated,” Benson told the Chicago Sun-Times. “There was alcohol on the boat and others were enjoying themselves, but I wasn’t drunk.”
“They gave me a field sobriety test, told me to say my ABCs and told me to count from 1 to 4 up and down,” Benson told the Chicago Tribune. “I’m thinking, I passed all the tests, did everything right. Then the officer told me we needed to go to land to take more tests. I politely asked him why we needed to go to land to take more tests when I took every test. Then he sprayed me with mace, on his boat.
“I’m not handcuffed. I’m not under arrest. I’m not threatening him. I’m not pushing him. I’m not touching him. And he sprays me right in my eye.”
[...]
“Nobody saw what he did to me,” Benson told the newspaper. “I started screaming for my mother to come. That’s when they put me under arrest. And the officer threw a life jacket over my head.
“Once we got to land, the Travis County police grabbed me and kicked my feet from under me. So I landed on my back while I was handcuffed. They held me down and held the water hose over my face. I couldn’t breathe, I’m choking, I’m begging the cops, ‘Please stop. Please stop.’ Then they picked me up and dragged me backward toward their car. And I’m still being polite, asking them, ‘Sir, could you please allow me to walk like a man to your cop car?’ They just kept dragging me on.”
I particularly like the part when he’s screaming for his mom. Because honestly, which one of us wouldn’t do the same in that situation?

On the radio this morning
I heard that his Mom was on the boat, and that the gathering on the boat was mostly family.
I cant speak for everyone, but I surely don’t get bombed with my Mom and family. Maybe enough to be legally drunk though, but not enough to be belligerent to police. Then again, Im not a rockstar/NFL player either.

Earl and Priest the only classy RB's from Texas. Good Luck Jamaal!
Hopefully Jamaal will be a hit for the Chiefs and help clean up the tarnished reputation that have been following our RB’s from Texas.

Maybe I missed it
What did Ricky do that wasn’t “classy”? And no, I don’t consider smoking pot to be “unclassy”. Sure, it may be unwise, especially when you know your career depends on not doing it, but I wouldn’t go so far to call it unclassy.
So take that.

Personally, I DO consider pot-smoking "unclassy."
I think it’s stupid for many reasons.
But regardless of that, the “unclassy” think Ricky did was to CONTINUALLY break the rules of his employer. Because his rule violations resulted in suspension of his employment, the situation became very public and embarrassing.
Whether or not you approve of his drug use is inconsequential. He broke the rules, over and over again. When given second, third, etc. chances, he agreed to follow the rules. And then broke them again.
Not classy.
Also, not classy to give up a huge potential salary, and be put in debt, for breaking said rules … especially when you have children to feed.
I refused to name my children Vince, Kevin or Major ... despite my secret desire to do so.

Too many people in the boat.
Don’t fuck with the LCRA rangers, let that be a lesson to all you Devil’s Cove deviants.
Really though, if it was mostly his family on the boat he shouldn’t have been out of line. Not being able to say your ABCs means you’ve had more to drink than you should’ve.
by jimmer on May 5, 2008 1:15 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Here's my take on it
First of all, the LCRA is a corporation and isn’t any form of government, I didn’t know that for the longest time, and it’s quite surprising.
Second, yeah a lot of us, particularly those who are the same age as Ced and were in the same year as him, knew he could be an asshole some if not a lot of the time.
Third, just think about this for a minute. He’s a in shape black man on a boat with other people who look like him, on Lake Travis.( Let’s also assume that the guys that took him in were white.) Sure he may have “12” people on the boat with him, and that could possibly warrant a “safety” inspection, but this all smells about as bad as the fish in Lake Travis. I could see him getting off with not too much trouble, then again, his previous run ins with the law might make it a bit more difficult.
Now, I’m not black, or white. I know that when I get pulled over by a cop/trooper/etc, or have to talk to one, it’s all yes and no sirs, because I feel that since I am hispanic, if I don’t pretend to give this guy all the respect in the world he thinks he deserves (and some do, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they don’t deserve some respect) that he’s going to rock my world, and not in the good way.

Im white as a babys bottom...
But yessir and nosir flow like a river form me whenever I get pulled over either. I certainly dont have any problem kissing a cops ass twhile I talk to him, the time to cuss him out is when you are driving away, with the windows up. When you are in that situation, rightful or not, its just dumb to give them any reason above whatever they already have to nail you.
LCRA isnt your typical corporation either. Its not like McDonalds bought up the lake rights. They are a public utility formed by the Texas Government.

lily white
But, general rule of thumb: Be curtious and polite to law enforcement that stops you, ESPECIALLY when alcohol or illegal drugs are involved.
The LCRA is a not for profit conservation and reclamation district established by the state legislature. It can also be dissolved by the legislature. The LCRA is responsible for policing the Highland Lakes.

I was wrong to laugh at Ced...
Now that more details are coming out, other than the initial blurb I saw on the ESPN newswire.
If this is a show of excessive force, I think the cops, or whoever it was, should be reprimanded severely. Is it just me, or do the police/enforcement officers in Austin tend to “overreact?”

I was gonna give him the benefit of the doubt but
I was speaking to my boss earlier, he manages a restaurant on the river called Johnny Fin’s. From what he told me, Benson is really obnoxious and hes always blearing his sound system in his boat. When he and a few other employees tried to confront him and his “entourage” about being so obnoxious and loud, and maybe moving further down the water, all they got was a verbal raping by him and his crew…
Oh and supposedly Benson has his number 32 painted on his boat…haha

Completely accurate
I’ve observed the exact same, on Lake Travis, on a number of occasions.

it didn't take long for the apologists to appear
even have a few people grabbing in their wallets for the race card, too.
Typical reaction when it is Benson.

I think many just believe in letting the law work itself out. He is innocent until prove n guilty, and unless you were
there you can’t say for sure what actually happened. How hard can a guy party if his mom is on the boat? Let’s wait for more facts before we condemn the guy. I’m sure that if A&M had a high profile player in the NFL (sorry, I can’t think of one off-hand), and he was in a similar situation, you would want to give a player you support the benefit of the doubt too.

do you have NOTHING better to do than to antagonize us?
If you want to talk football on a Texas site, great. Be your “contrarian for the sake of contrariety” self when correcting someone about their usage of a phrase that, according to the rules you just made up, is only 95% accurate instead of fully 100% Beergut-accurate. It’s annoying, but at least you’re talking about football. But seriously, now you’re just being antagonistic. If you want to hang out on a Texas site, don’t rile up the locals just for the hell of it.

Additional Benson follow-up...
A woman who was a passenger in Cedric Benson’s boat when he was pepper-sprayed and arrested Saturday night said the Chicago Bears running back did not seem intoxicated and did not resist arrest, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Elizabeth Cartwright, 22, a senior at the University of Texas and a friend of Benson, said she called her father and asked him to call police about the way Benson was treated by officers of the Lower Colorado River Authority, which patrols Lake Travis, a man-made lake northwest of Austin, Texas.
“I called my dad and told him, ‘Call 911, my black friend is getting beaten up by police on Lake Travis,’” Cartwright recalled, according to the Tribune. “It’s more what I heard than what I saw. I have never heard or seen Cedric that scared.”
More in the article.
For those wondering why Benson has no eyewitnesses, it was apparently because one of the officers took him to the LCRA boat to administer the tests; thus, no one on the boat could see what was going on.
Couple of interesting bullets from the story:
Cartwright said she is willing to present her account of events as evidence. She also said her fiance took photographs of the incident that help back up her claims.
Not sure how clear those pictures are, but it’s interesting that they exist.
According to the Tribune, Cartwright said she had had one drink and Benson had consumed two when the party of about 15 people decided to head back to shore at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday to get dinner.
If Benson was steering the boat, consuming any alcohol is rather dangerous, so he’s definitely in the wrong there.
As has been discussed, it’s very likely the real story lies somewhere in between Benson’s account and the police’s.

I used to be friends with Cartwright...
Her fiance is Aaron Harris (yes, that one), and she has lots of interesting stories to tell regarding football players’ adventures. She’s actually told me lots of stuff regarding some past situations when they were ongoing (RT’s weed, Jermichael Finley’s family, behind the scenes stuff), but I always took it with a grain of salt and rarely passed on that info to BON. She’s proven decently accurate in the past, and if she’s willing to testify she must feel confident about what happened. At the same time, knowing her has given me reason to not believe her, but I’d rather keep those personal experiences quiet.

Link from Statesman/Bevo Beat
It’s just like I thought, but couldn’t know until pictures came out, but it’s a boat with black men and a bunch of white women. Of course the cops were going to pull it over! I don’t want to keep coming back to this subject, but I just found the pic interesting.
by texasauteur on May 8, 2008 2:41 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
there's something to that, probably.
i have no idea how often the LCRA pulls people over, but if they’re anything like real cops, I’m going to go ahead and guess that the racial composition of that party didn’t help their cause.
regardless, how bad could it have been? Cedric’s MOM was on the boat.
also, deon beasley was there too. did we know this previously?
