NHL Discussion
It's really dead... both hockey and this time of year for all sports. No football, no Longhorns in the CWS, the Astros are horrible. For some reason, I remember how I used to love hockey and I had a great idea for the NHL.
The National Hockey League needs to push it's season back so that the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs starts the week after the NBA Finals end. The Stanley Cup Finals would end right before college football starts back up. It would be a great way to reach an audience when there is little else in the way of competition.
College football, the NFL and the NBA dominate the NHL throughout the year. Football is always relevant and the NBA Finals are always right on top of the NHL Finals. Why not seize that time when people seem to be begging for sports on television?

Hockey in the Summer
While I personally would love to see that happen, I just can’t see the NHL choosing to put their winter sport showcase (playoffs) in the middle of 100 degree temps. While they don’t get much interest (except from the few hockey fans of us there are), I think they might even lose a few more if it came to watching/playing in the summer. Something doesn’t add up.

Baseball is America's Pasttime
It’s all I need. Real fans stick with their teams, win or lose. Especially a team that was in the freaking World Series two years ago. Sheesh.

The northerner's would pitch a fit
And they’re the one’s who are the most passionate (by that I mean borderline insane). It’s a winter sport there, and for obviously reasons always will be.
Personally, I’d love to head to a nicely chilled reunion during the Summer and watch the stars, but I don’t see it happening.

Interesting Idea
I think it’s a great idea, but it will never be. Gary Bettman does not seem incredibly interested in getting his game in front of as many eyes as possible, evidenced by the league renewing its TV contract w/ the Versus network. I heard a lot of complaints about local Dallas fans not being able to watch the Stars in the conference finals!! I couldn’t get game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals in New Jersey?! While that is not a league issue but a local cable operator issue, that would NEVER happen if the league didn’t ruin itself with the lockout a few years back. The saddest part is, every time I force whoever’s with me to watch whatever playoff game is on (not just the Stars), they all say how exciting it is and they never knew hockey could be so fun. Here’s hoping the game can keep expanding and reaching more people w/ its great product.

Hockey
I was a big Colorado Avalanche fan during the days of Roy, Sakic, Forsberg, etc. Their cup victory with Ray Bourque was memorable; I had something to do that night, so I VCR’ed the game and watched it at like 2 in the morning. Incredible.
The strike killed it for me; the Avs had no idea how to spend their money and are just another average at best team, while the hated Red Wings and Stars utilized player development and are still consistently two of the top teams in the league. I was mildly interested when the Avs picked up Foote and Forsberg for the playoff run again, but memories only take you so far.

While not a big fan of MLB
the Astros are horrible
is simply inaccurate.
Ice hockey will only interest me if UT gets into the game. While living in Tucson, some of the best sporting events I attended were UofA college hockey games.

“I don’t really care. Let’s talk about the Dodgers, I don’t think anybody really watches hockey anymore.”

I think it would actually work better if they had the playoffs earlier. It is a winter sport after all. Then they wouldn’t be competing with the nba playoffs, but with the regular season. Given that so many teams make the playoffs anyway, I think it’d be a good thing to shorten the nhl regular season, not that that will ever happen (contraction too)—too much lost revenue. Bettman’s a dink.

I think the NHL should move the season to the summer...
... and increase the number of outdoor games by 10000%
Then I want them to sign a 5000 year deal with Versus network and stay the heck off of my TV.
