Other teams like Texas
There's no denying the impressive number of wins Mack Brown has brought to Texas. His win percentage is well over 70%, and he's had 10+ wins for seven consecutive seasons. Year in and year out, Texas is probably viewed by most fans as a "good" team.
However, despite the numbers, the trophy case is not exactly full. One NC and one conference championship (with 2 CCG appearances) are all Texas has to show for its achievements.
But Texas is still percieved as a good, sometimes elite team. It's hard for me to rank Texas as far as its achievements go. What other teams do ya'll place comparable to Texas? The criteria would be:
-A team that wins consistently
-A team thats viewed as "good"
-A team that has little or nothing to show for a good season other than its wins, year after year.
Off the top of my head, Wisconsin comes to mind. Others?

The grass ain't always greener.
Going back to the 98 season, here are the teams with the top 10 winning percentages, their MNC’s and conference titles. LSU is notably absent because they’re several wins under the top 10 cut.
1. Boise State 0.810__4 outright conference, 1 shared
2. Texas 0.805___MNC, 1x outright conference
3. Oklahoma 0.785 __MNC, 5x conference
4. Ohio State 0.784 __MNC, 2 outright Conference, 2 shared conference
5. Virginia Tech 0.773 __2x Conference
6. Georgia 0.764 ___2x conference
7. Miami (Florida) 0.758 _MNC, 3 Outright (Big East), 1 shared (B.E)
8. Southern California 0.748 1 BCS, 2 AP MNCs, 3x outright conference, 2x shared
9. Michigan 0.744 _1 outright conference, 3 shared
10. Florida 0.732 ___ 1 MNC, 2 outright conference
FYI, Wisco has one outright conference title and one shared over that period with a .709 winning percentage.
I could have missed an item. Looking at the list, there’s not a program I’d be more proud to support than the University of Texas. That’s not to say that I think Mack’s maximized the potential of his teams by any means. But I wouldn’t trade a few more items in the case to cheer for Boise or tOSU.

Mack with warts
still has elevated the Horns to elite status. And that’s a hell of a lot better than the 10 years preceding this. So, he has done – and is doing – what he was hired for.
And I think he learned from 2006 and 2007 there’s no coasting at this level. (I don’t think learned is quite the inclusive term for the aftermath of the A&M game, but in this context, it will work.)
Good list, learned hand. You could just about ask what teams do you NOT want to play year-in and year-out and come up with a similar list of usual suspects.
A team that has little or nothing to show for a good season other than its wins, year after year.
This has to be Tceh.

As I said in a previous thread
The only ones I would consider swapping places with are OU and USC. But even those arent drop of a hat either.
Be proud of what Texas has accomplished under Mack, its really much more then he usually gets credit for.

And theres no way in hell I would trade places with Wisconsin
Complain about 10 win seasons as a goal all you like, but if you think we have played second fiddle to OU for a while, Wisconsin barely registers in the Big 10. And their 2000-2003 blew compared to ours.

WHAT???
Do you know how many CCs and NC appearances we would have playing in the big ten. Just think, we could start every year ranked in the top three and then get exposed in the NC, still be considered elite, and get another top ten recruiting class….Then

If you want to be Texas in the Big 10
Id consider that. Though with the likes of Tech, OU, and aTm the Big 12 south is really a fun and unique place to be
However I dont want to change places with Wisconsin fans for the past 10 years, which was how I interpreted the question.
There might be some greener grass over the past 10 years that what Mack has grown at UT, but there isnt much, and its just baaaarely greener.

Well said
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.
Is it football season YET?

The stats say
the only other program ahead of us in winning percentage in last 10 years is Boise State.
Personally, I won’t change anything with Idaho but I would covet the BCS win over OU, who is right behind us on the list.

I would have thought Auburn would have been on the list. Seems like they win 10ish games every year and only have that 13-0 season to show for it. They were the first team to pop in my head with the criteria from above.

Auburn=Bringing up the rear of the top 20 with BC
Here’s the winning percentage for everybody since Mack came aboard, overall, away, and home.

MACK DADDY
I think Mack is a great college football coach. College is all about recruiting, and he does a great job at that. I think last year (2007) was his worse year, but he made changes this off-season. I look forward to every football season, because Texas always competes for championships (since Mack has been here). I am excited this year, because there are so many young and talented players that will be playing.

Vols
Without being too negative it seems to me like Tennessee is a pretty good comparison. Both UTs get top 5 recruiting classes every single year. Both occasionally rise up and win a NC (Tenn in 98, Tex in 05.) Both have “manager” type coaches. Both programs have had disciplinary problems because of the HC’s hands off approach (and also because local law enforcement doesn’t let the players off the hook like they do in some football towns like Norman or Columbus.) Both have been criticized (rightly or wrongly) as relying too much on raw talent and being too conservative on offense. Both have been criticized for under-developing the elite talent they recruit into the program. Both have been criticized for lack of preparedness until after an upset loss.
Tennessee has it slightly harder than we do because they’re in the SEC where you can’t coast to ten wins on sheer talent like Texas occasionally does (as we did last year.) Texas has OU to play every year and aside from that we have no elite level rivals in the entire conference (I still don’t consider Mizzou or Kansas elite level until they can show year-to-year consistency, and Nebraska is still dormant.) Tennessee has Florida and Georgia in their own division and has to play Alabama every year, as well as Auburn and LSU on an alternating basis.
That said I don’t consider Mack nearly as bad a field coach as I consider Phil Fulmer. If Mack can maintain the intensity we saw late in the season last year I really think Texas can take that big step from contending every five to ten years to contending (almost) every year, like USC, OSU, OU, and LSU have done this decade.

I was just looking for teams that have similar achievements to texas
Trading places with other teams, I have no interest with, especially wisconsin, jeez. But the Tennessee comparison was really on point, hadn’t thought of them. Clemson would probably be comparable too, but we win more.
And after all, in both 2006, and 2007, we were only short of reaching BCS games by losing to A&M. 2006 we coud’ve clinched the big12 south, likely won the conference and gone to the fiesta bowl. 2007, we all heard the rumblings about a very likely sugarbowl or orangebowl appearance had we won out, and not shitted our pants at Kyle Field. So we were close, 5 points short in 06, 8 points short in 07. So close…
Its a new season!

In '06, we were closer to bigger prizes
If Colt never gone down against K-state, we might have faced Ohio State in the title game. And you know what? I loved our chances against them. I knew they were overrated ever since they beat us (seriously, GD, why pass more with a freshman QB on dinky short routes when you’re running all over their defense?). We were among the hottest teams in the country when the wheels came off that game. Ugh. A second straight national title WITHOUT Vince would have been sweet.

Yup, we had the inside track.
And Colt marched down the field 4/4 if I remember right to open that game.
tOSU game was close for the majority of the game, with a super green QB. I would have liked our chances in a rematch as well, Colts confidence, and probably Greg’s confidence in Colt, were both much higher later in the year. That injury was a killer.
I know I know, Colt didn’t play defense against KSU, but the whole team is related, a good O helps the Defense and vice-versa. Ill forever think that games a win if Colt stays healthy. And seeing how aTm came down to a pass interference call, I think a healthy Colt could have been the difference there too…
Anyway, man, when does football start IM READY! BOOM!

you didn't lose A&M '06 b/c of a pass interference call
You lost b/c your defense completely collapsed in the 3rd/4th quarter, when A&M’s offense ran the ball down their throat, and texas couldn’t stop it.

that's pretty sad...
...b/c all of that is true, and we STILL could’ve won if not for that call on Limas

The first quarter drive which stalled on the goalline
would be a better hope – and would have put 14 points on the board.
Beergut is right, the defense just wore down and got beat to shit in the second half. They were holding on as long as they could. If it had been 14 on the board and not 7, then things might have played out differently. But it didn’t. On that last aggie drive, about all we could have hoped for is a fumble; we weren’t gonna stop them, the D was overpowered and giving up yards on every play.

I blame the offense
No defense can be asked to hold on if their offense is not getting them points and sustaining drives. If we put up the points we should have, there’s no way the Aggies could simply run on us like that. The defense wore out, and I had a hard time blaming them. At the end of the day, they gave up a paltry 12 points. Too bad our offense put up a pathetic 7. Granted, the pass interference call was bogus, but we still should have at least gotten a FG off of that. Colt threw a stupid pass and it got picked off. I’m not going to use that bad call as an excuse. We didn’t deserve to win.

I agree
Its totally the offenses fault, due in part to Colt’s injury.
Theres no excuse to lose a game at home where your opponent only scores 12.
I dont blame the game on the Pass Interference call either, it shouldn’t have come down to that at all. My only point in bringing it up is, if that one call goes the other way, its a whole different game, probably a win for us.

06' Ohio State game
If Pittman didn’t fumble on the 1, Texas wins that game. The whole game changed after that. Billy Pittman never recovered from that play.
by Longhorns84 on Jun 27, 2008 11:11 AM CDT 0 recs
I remember that clearly
Brutal play. We were marching the field at will. It’s not GD’s fault that he fumbled, but I was upset with the playcalls at the goalline. If I’m not mistaken, we had over 90 yards rushing in the FIRST QUARTER, which was absolutely perfect as we were trying to protect our freshmen QB. When we get to the endzone, we call two straight pass plays, and one of them that God-forsaken bubble screen pass that Pittman fumbles on. Go figure.

A bit much?
It was a big play, no doubt, but Ohio State still could have won that game. Especially since we still had the same game plan whether we fumbled or not. Your list of scapegoats is growing very long.

I believe they won 6 straight conference titles under Carroll.

Correct, it should be 3x shared
2002 Washington State (7-1) & USC (7-1)
2003 USC (7-1)
2004 USC (8-0)
2005 USC (8-0)
2006 Southern California (7-2)
Calfiornia (7-2)
2007 Arizona State (7-2)
Southern California (7-2)
