Dumb Aggie Pwned
Dumb aggie wondering why his basketball team isn't ranked in the top 25 for next season.
"In your preseason top 25, you don't have Texas A&M listed in the top 25 or among "others considered." Explain to me how a team that has made the tournament each of the past three years; a team that was a blown call from defeating UCLA this past season; a team that was in the Sweet 16 two years ago; a team that loses little if you consider DeAndre Jordan a loss; and has another year of digesting coach Mark Turgeon's philosophy gets ignored? You had some votes for Baylor, whom the Aggies beat 71-57 last season. Texas is in your top 25. The Aggies beat the Longhorns 80-63. You even have votes for Ohio State, whom the Aggies crushed 70-47."
Sound logic huh?
Rvials.com writer doens't seem to think so.
let the ownage begin.....
"I don't think you can compare Texas A&M to Texas and Baylor, at least not favorably. The Longhorns and Bears each return four starters from NCAA Tournament teams. And while A&M did beat both those teams once, it also lost to both, including a 27-point setback to Texas. Ohio State, the other team you mentioned, loses three starters, just like the Aggies. On the plus side, the Buckeyes signed the nation's No. 6 recruiting class - which includes B.J. Mullens (the nation's No. 1 overall prospect). A&M's class isn't in the top 30."
PWNED. Now sit down Aggie. And shut up.

...I see it ending poorly

It’s okay to dream big texasfan, but choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a f*ing big television to see the Horns play.

I don't think he has a point at all
Let’s take this argument by argument, shall we?
1. They’ve made the tournament the past 3 years. Fantastic. Texas has made the tournament the past 10 years. What the hell does that have to do with how either team will perform in the 2008-2009 season?
2. The were a blown call from defeating UCLA. This is the most lucid, intelligent point in the whole rant. And still irrelevant.
3. They made the Sweet 16 two years ago. So did Southern Illinois. Should they be in the preseason top 25 because they won their first and second round games TWO YEARS AGO? Besides, exactly who from the A&M roster and coaching staff in that season is still with the program? That’s a short list. Even shorter once you start qualifying valuable players. Completely worthless argument.
4. They’re not losing anyone—unless you consider DeAndre Jordan a loss. My, my. What a different tune is being sung by the Aggies now. Jordan turns out to be useless and leaves your sorry program after 1 year, so you all throw him under the bus. And I think most level-headed Aggies would consider Joseph Jones and Dominique Kirk to be significant losses, even if Jordan did turn out to be a dud.
5. The team will have another year of digesting Turgeon’s philosophy. Well, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m sold on that one. Move the Aggies right on up to preseason #1 because they find themselves in the unique position of having a coach who isn’t in his first year.
What’s really humorous about the whole thing is that this guy actually sounds like he thought he was putting together a logical defense. It amazes me how these people can’t see the forest for the trees. Maybe it shouldn’t, but it does.

Uhh...not quite
I never thought I’d be defending an Aggie here, but I think I have to, at least a little bit.
Your point-by-point dissection kind of amounts to ridicule more than actual refutations. I think the fact that they were blown call from defeating a fantastic UCLA team last year should speak for something. They also beat Ohio State, Texas, and Baylor, making 4 teams on the top 25 that A&M beat. Now I’m not saying they’re better than those teams, but they’re clearly competitive. And lets be real, having a coach for one year and having a coach for 2 is a big difference. They get the advantage of summer camps and offseason work out of their players.

It isn't ridicule when it's based on facts
What should their “almost win” against UCLA speak for? The fact that they had crappy refs in that game? It has no bearing on the discussion, especially when you consider the fact that even if Sloan had made his shot or both free-throws, the game is tied. There was no guaranteed win either way.
As for who else they beat during the regular season, not interested. When you beat a team by 20 points and turn around three weeks later and lose to them by 30, I don’t want to hear you.
The coaching issue is also a non-sequitur in this argument. It may be better for their TEAM that Turgeon is in his second year. But how does that make them better, comparatively speaking, than any of the teams that are in the preseason top 25? Every team that isn’t under a first year coach has an extra year of their coach’s philosophy. It’s not a phenomenon that’s unique to A&M. It doesn’t give them an advantage over any team that doesn’t have a first year coach.
This team did not even finish 2008 ranked in the top 25. Considering who they’re losing, do you honestly believe they deserve to be ranked to start 2009?

Sigh
Yeah I was worried about a response like this but I guess I started it.
Before I go on, I should say that my issue is not with the fact that I think A&M should be ranked, but by the offhand way you dismiss the questioner’s points.
1. A&M may not have won the UCLA, but they were competitive with a highly ranked team.
2. Regarding wins against Texas and Baylor - again I won’t say they’re better than UT or Baylor, but to split games with UT suggests they’re competitive with a highly ranked team.
3. “Every team that isn’t under a first year coach has an extra year of their coach’s philosophy” Fine, but I argue (rightfully so, I think) that the first offseason a coach spends with a team implementing his system produces bigger changes than subsequent ones. Installing the system is like preliminary spadework required to build a foundation. This suggests that having another year under the new coach will improve an A&M team that was competitive with Texas and UCLA last year.
4. Regarding not finishing in the top 25 - fine, I don’t insist that they be in the pre-season top 25, I just think the question has more merit than you would claim.

Haha, I was kinda thinking the same
It’s just a post to poke lighthearted fun at an Aggie. What else is new at Texas?

It's just the offseason...
Post this when there’s something actually going on (football season) and it will get taken much less seriously. We live in a desert!
