Phil Steele's Big XII All-Conference Teams
Let's get the bad news out of the way first: there are ZERO (count 'em, ZERO) Longhorns on Phil's first team. Yikes. There are, however, 9 Sooners. Fantastic.
Here's the rundown of Longhorns:
Second Team
WR Jordan Shipley
WR Quan Cosby
OG Cedric Dockery
DT Roy Miller
DE Brian Orakpo
LB Jared Norton
CB Ryan Palmer
K Ryan Bailey
Third Team
C Chris Hall
OT Adam Ulatoski
DT Lamarr Houston
LB Sergio Kindle
LB Rashad Bobino
CB Deon Beasley
Fourth Team
QB Colt McCoy
RB Fozzy Whittaker
LB Rod Muckelroy
CB Chykie Brown
KR Quan Cosby
Thoughts
- I think I echo the sentiment of BON fans when I say: Bobino over Muck? Palmer over Beasley? I know Phil Steele is widely thought of as the preeminent CFB mind, but those two just look like mistakes. Muck, Beasley and Houston all look too low to me.
- High praise for Fozzy and Chykie, who have yet to step foot on the ballfield. Let's hope they live up to these expectations.
- Darrell Scott also comes in as a 2nd team RB. That would've looked nice in Burnt Orange.
- Also wishful thinking: Jamaal Charles most likely would've been 1st team with DeMarco Murray. Jermichael probably would've slotted in 3rd or 4th, behind Gresham and Chase Coffman (and possibly Brandon Pettigrew).
- Our young kids better improve, as our entire second team representatives are seniors, save for Jared Norton. Compare that to OU, where FIVE of their 9 1st teamers could possibly return (Murray, Gresham, Granger, English, Reynolds).
- A&M's got 5 TOTAL players on this list. And one of them's their punter, Justin Brantly. He did make first team, though.
Phil's also got Texas 15 in his pre-season ranks.

Too Bullish on Fozzy
Where’s the the fucking love for Vondrell? Eight TDs last year for the truck and Phil snubs him for a muppetbaby.
Its a fucking tragedy that Orakpo isnt a first teamer. A. English was a back-up last year and i don’t really think Fagian Campbell has the prerequisites over a the B12 Defensive Freshman of the year in 2005.
I think our LBs are about right. Muck is a badass, but was hurt a lot of last year. Norton is onsistant and Bobano gets the nod simply since he’s been on the team for 9 years. If Kindle can play with the lead pipe cock we hope he has, then there is no reason why he’s not a first teamer by the end of the year. I can’t remember the last time Texas had 4 LBs in any list though.
Aaron Lewis should’ve been on that list somewhere.

your kidding....
Right?
Lamarr Houston is a great player, and is a solid D lineman, but “best player on the team”??? I don’t think so. He’s not even the best player on the Defense. Kindle takes that slot. This should be Kindles year, I’ve watched him for 2 years now, and when he’s not hurt, everytime he’s on the field he makes a play. When we kick the ball off, me and my friends just watch Kindle because he always takes someone’s head off, whether it be the ball carrier or a blocker.
I hope we play Sam Acho more because from what I’ve seen of him, I think he will be our next great DE.
And I don’t think it’s too far fetched to say that by the end of the 08 season, either Ben wells or Christian Scott will be on the all big 12 team.
Watch out for the Texas D baby. National champs, 08,09,10.

Love Sam Acho
Dare I say, the guy reminds me of Brian Robison in a lot of ways.

Best player
I’d put Orakpo first right now, but it’s conceivable that by the end of the year, Houston will take that mantle from him.
Houston’s probably my favorite player to watch on D, followed by Kindle.
And I have as much unbridled enthusiasm about Sam Acho as you do, texasfan.

Agreed.
Freak, Freak, Freak, Freak, FREAK! Maybe one day Kindle will surpass him, but for right now, Houston is the creme de la creme because his job is KILL! Kindle has to do too much COVER! MAINTAIN YOUR GAP! READ! Ok, now KILL! If he gets that down, he’ll have it, but Lamarr’s learning curve went asymptotic the second he popped that TCU QB’s skull like an ancient staph sore. Tell me that the moment he caught the ball on the first kickoff at the Holiday Bowl you didn’t pee just a tiny bit.

My boy Roy
I am partial to Roy Miller. He is a beast. He may be the best player on this team. Sergio, though … wow, if he pulls it all together this year he could be one of the best Longhorns ever!

Top 10 players on the team
this is an interesting question worthy of its own thread in the doldrum of sporting events that we find ourselves.
Here’s my list:
10. Chris Hall
9. Deon Beasley
8. Cedric Dockery
7. Rod Muckelroy
6. Vondrell McGee
5. Roy Miller
4. Quan Cosby
3. Lamarr Houston
2. Colt McCoy – if it wasn’t for the fact that a runner-up to the Heisman and a guy that just had the best freshman year ever has an O-line full of seniors (not to mention a guy who has a video game for an offense) Colt would be a first team all big 12 selection this year.
1. Brian Orakpo. This guy is a freak. If he’s healthy, people are going to be talking about the way he dominates games.
