Cedric Benson Arrested Again
This time on land.
The Austin American Statesman is reporting that Benson was arrested late last night and charged with drunken driving after being stopped in downtown Austin for a traffic violation. He was released this morning after posting bail.
Getting arrested once is possibly explainable. Getting arrested twice in a month is not. Enter Roger Goodell. Exit Cedric Benson.

Innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunantely, with the two incidents being so close together and with all the controversy surrounding the first, Ced has not helped himself.

The infamous
........Aaron Harris was playing posse last night. He was allowed to do the field sobriety test right out in front of Kenishi sushi bar. I’m sure APD will use plenty of video to prove their case. He wasn’t released until past 9:00am.

Dear dumb rich athletes
I do not care if you party all night, every night.
But hire a motherf___king driver or spring for a cab.

Wow
BWI, DWI…
Step aside Big Brown, we have a former Texas athlete attempting something no other athlete has done before, the Triple Crown of drunken vehicle operation!! All he’s got to do now is go back to Midland and operate a John Deere while intoxicated, and he’s done it!!!
Horizontalism is its own reward.

Actually ...
... the Statesman says it was his mom’s birthday party.
So while many are asking, “what’s up with Ced,” I’m left asking, “Dude, what’s up with Ced’s mom?”
Watch out, I bite.

ugh
I know Austin’s great and all, but you’d think a guy that’s battling for a roster position would, you know, wanna be in his home team’s city trying to prepare for the upcoming season.
I stuck up for you the first time Benson. Not happening again.
by jc25 on Jun 7, 2008 2:02 PM CDT 0 recs
I'm with you. It's amazing to me that this guy is watching his career implode
and is not in Chicago trying to salvage it. Now, not only are the Bears going to cut ties with him, but nobody else in the league is going to want to take a chance on him. Pacman, Tank Johnson, and others got a second or third chance, but they were good when they were on the field. Sadly, you can’t say the same about Cedric’s career so far.

I don't know...
While the Titans are certainly wary of character issues, they do have a large amount of UT alums on the team and have been actively looking for another power back to fill in for Lendale. It wouldn’t shock me if the Titans took a flyer on him.

Might want to clarify that
Because he was 4-0 against the Ags, and carried 35 times for 283 yards last time he was on Kyle Field.

Exactly...you should have clarified
You didn’t state that he was a bust in the NFL….you said on the field. I beg to differ.

He should've learned from Reggie McNeal
When you’re too drunk to drive, get another drunk guy to drive your car. That way you won’t be slapped with a DUI, even if your teammate gets arrested and suspended.

Benson isn't
.......deserving of our sympathy. Future stars had better take notice. The media and PC police are going to make examples of them if they abuse the use of alcohol. I’m no anti-drinker, but I recognize reality when I see it. These guys had better face reality and in the process save their careers!!
Even if you don’t like Mariotti’s piece, you have to admit he nailed it with this:
==========================================================We should have known it was a blunder that day, when Benson weeped openly and then ripped other NFL teams who had questioned his character. Turns out those teams were right and Angelo was the dummy who will have to live with this career-marring flub.

Riding the high horse
We’ve sure got a lot of people riding the high horse on this. If it turns out that this really was “two or three drinks with a late dinner” and later speeding through a yellow light, then maybe so much moral outrage is not warranted. In the grand scheme of things this is fairly petty, compared for instance to trading crack cocaine to a prostitute for sex (Austin cop Scott Lando). We make a BFD over drunk driving, but virtually ignore other impairments—lack of sleep, prescription drugs, yakking on the cell phone, sheer incompetence. So, yes, he has violated one of our cherished taboos. But at the end of the day (or night), no harm was done.
Could it be that what really upsets us is his failure to live up to our need for him to be a role model? After four years of hero worship, perhaps we fooled ourselves thinking that superior performance of the field somehow results from superior character. That college athletics is (or ought to be) some kind of morality play where virtue triumphs. When we see our heroes acting like the party animals they have always been, we are reminded of our disappointment and angry that they have betrayed our expectations. The outrage here is less about Benson than ourselves for allowing ourselves to be taken in again.
Now Benson played the hero long enough to know the expectations that come with the role. After a leading the life of a star athlete, he must realize that he is held to a higher standard of conduct and that it is part of the deal that brings the riches his way. Surely he knows how Austin cops delight in bringing down football players who act as if they are above the law. And a PB said, he should have know to just call a f——king cab.
But isn’t this just college athletics in a nutshell? We need heroes so much that we find them on the football field, and when they do not behave heroically enough, we vilify them for being the very thing our hero worship has made them. And these ‘role models’ learn early in life that they can have anything and do anything as long as they perform on the field. Until they are eventually brought down by same system that raised them up.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

Did you really consider Mr Plasma a role model?
You really need to reevaluate whom you look up to.

No I don't
In general, I look at football players as entertainers, not role models. But that is clearly what the University expects of them.

Taboo?
Driving while intoxicated is a “taboo?” You’re kidding, right?
I take a hard line on this one. Probably because I drive around with two little people in my car who mean the world to me. When someone is driving irresponsibly, I just imagine what it would be like to lose one of those kids because of someone else’s foolish and selfish behavior.
The guy is a freakin multi-millionaire. He can afford cab fare. Stop defending jackasses. I don’t need a hero. I just need someone who represents my alma mater to act like a decent human being.
Watch out, I bite.

I respectfully disagree with you Caradoc
Someone needs to relate this bit of wisdom to all the Cedric Benson’s out there… “to whom much is given, much will be expected.” You can attribute that both Spiderman/Marvel Comics and the Bible and I am sure you can guess which Editor came up with it first.
I am not judging him by saying what he was doing is wrong because I am superior to him, it’s just wrong because its wrong. It always a selfish act to put others lives at risk… No matter what substance or act is causing your judgment to be impaired.
I do feel for him. This was stupid… it was also wrong. He is going to pay the price and I hope he learns from that.

Why did my post get deleted?
Awiggo or PB? I posted this on BON in the dairies or fanblogs before awiggo got it on the main page. Not trying to be a jerk but why delete my fanpost and post on the main page 30 minutes later?

Agreed
At least warn a person if their Fan-post is being deleted & replaced w/ a “main page” post. Or bump the Fan-post to the main page.
Odd though, as BON is one of the few sites usually very good at this.
If it makes you feel better UT2001, I did see & read your original post. It did exist….you’re mind is not playing tricks.

this is beginning to spiral out of control.
somehow Selvin just became the best Longhorns running back in the league.
My adopted son Curtis Brown has the power of flight, but can't navigate his way onto the field.

My Two Cents...
I LOVE Texas Sports HOWEVER; some players on your team are like certain fraternity brothers in that deep down inside you cannnot stand the motherf$#@er because: their character is so severely lacking, they are a pompous ass, or they just plain suck as a human being.
There have definitely been a number of Texas football players who have fit this category and NO, Ricky Williams is not one of them. Ricky Williams is a Saint compared to a Cedric Benson.
"I asked Darrell Royal, the coach of the Texas Longhorns, why he didn’t recruit me and he said: "Well, Walt, we took a look at you and you weren’t any good.
