Durant now part of the "Thunder"
Not sure if this is final or not, but OKC news reported yesterday that the new NBA team will be called the "Thunder". I'm not a fan. If Duncan is a Spur and McGrady is a Rocket, what does that make Durant? A Thunderer? Sweet. To me that sounds like the name of a WNBA team, or something equally ridiculous.

WNBA isn't ridiculous!
(although yes, some of the team names certainly are)

well… I suppose it depends on your definition of ridiculous…
Personally, I just do not care about women’s basketball – I appreciate that many do, though. I think the biggest reason the WNBA gets disrespected is that interminable, constant promotion the NBA does… there’s a definite backlash. Bottom line, it’s just a niche sport, and no amount of selling seems to be changing that. I wish women’s volleyball (or heck, even men’s…) would get that level of promotion; I bet it would end up outdrawing the WNBA…
as per Durant… man I hope some good team is getting cap space ready for his inevitable escape from tornado alley…

yeah-
I was just pointing out that women’s basketball, by nature, isn’t ridiculous. I mean, they are great athletes, regardless of whether their league is popular to a wide audience.
However, I personally don’t watch it either.

To be fair
His original comment didn’t actually say the WNBA was ridiculous, just that the name of a WNBA team is. Same could be said for much of the arena football league.
I thought it was funny, and accurate.

Arena League IS ridiculous
I watched part of a game recently while at the gym. I believe when I stopped watching, one of the quarterbacks had 5 touchdowns on 9 completions.

Kyle Orton
Had as many completions to the Bears as he did to the Bengals until 2:43 left in the 3rd quarter in 2005.
That was pretty ridiculous.

NHL - not WNBA
Sounds like an NHL team. In particular, the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I thought NHL for awhile too
Especially if they had gone with something like the Tornadoes. I don’t know which would have been worse.

Tornadoes would be in poor taste
but a more intimidating name (although intimidation has nothing to do with team names at this level). I understand they wanted something regional, but they could do better than Thunder. Like the “Thieves” or something.

I disagree
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the OKC “Tornados” name. Many teams are named after natural disasters viz. “Miami Hurricanes”. I think Thunder sounds like a second tier name because it is a second tier name. Anybody remember NFL Europe? “Rhein Thunder?” Anyone? Buller? Buller? I think the perfect name for the new team would be the Oklahoma City Trailer Park Trash, or OKC TPT for short.

I personally wouldn't care
But after something like this happens, I don’t think it would be accepted by locals.

I don't think Thunder either.
When is the singular team naming fad going to end?
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.
Is it football season YET?

I was busy and offline
I’ve been busy at work the last 3 weeks doing transition tasks because I recently resigned. This week is my last week. But I also took a trip to roam around Texas, saw family and several of my old campus buddies. Now I am back (missing Texas) and online for the first time in a while. Glad to be back, I have a lot of BON catch-up to do.

Probably the best I've heard. Drop the city; why be so provincial in the NBA?
And Thundercats by PSUhorn is pretty damn good.
Cool Thundercats with ear-splitting jams from the ozone, KD falling from the skyyyyyyyyyyyyyy whap.

Even better
ThunderCats. Now THAT would be awesome.

I can already think of a great name for their dance team.

Hmmm
What do they call the players on the Miami Heat? Heaters?

Did someone say....
Oklahoma City Bombers? How inappropriate. I’m ashamed of you.
"I asked Darrell Royal, the coach of the Texas Longhorns, why he didn’t recruit me and he said: "Well, Walt, we took a look at you and you weren’t any good.
