End the Madness
Fellow BON'ers,
I just got up and came to BON as I usually do, first thing in the morning. I see that the Tebow thread is continuing to grow longer and longer as Beergut baits more and more of us into an fruitless discussion about the greatest player of all time based upon various ever-changing metrics, blah, blah, blah. Let me save you the time folks.
It is madness to have a discussion with someone who is going to distort facts, change the rules as he goes, and is impervious to reason. While Beergut is clearly capable of bringing something interesting to the table, he is obviously more interested in provoking people. He does so here, at Double T Nation, and other SBN blogs. Meanwhile he hasn't commented at 12thmanchild in over a year. This is not someone who wants to talk college football, this is someone who wants to argue. My own instinct upon reading some of his most recent nonsense is to dive back into the fray, as I have done numerous times before.
I'm not going to this time.
There are numerous blogs out there where we can argue with each other, walk each other into semantic traps, and engage in spiteful rhetoric. As PB suggested, orangebloods is only a few keystrokes (and a subscription fee) away.
What drew me to BON in the first place was the lack of bickering and the preponderance of high minded discourse about all things Longhorn. I know that I have contributed to the watering-down of great content with petty arguments, and for that, I apologize.
I guess I just wanted to say that while I will continue to actively read this blog, and regularly comment, for what it's worth, I personally am not going to engage in the "conversations" with everyone's favorite aggie.

1) I don’t bait anyone. I’m not a troll. I’m here to discuss college football, Big 12 football in particular. Just b/c I disagree with you (or any other poster on here) doesn’t mean I’m trying to ‘bait’ anyone. If I wanted to ‘bait’ a texas fan, I wouldn’t even bother with a discussion on Vince Young. There are a lot more scared cows I could attack than him.
2) My metrics haven’t changed. Just b/c you can’t find someone to match a standard I tried to define doesn’t mean you need to lie to try to make yourself look better.
It is madness to have a discussion with someone who is going to distort facts, change the rules as he goes, and is impervious to reason.
Distorting facts: Other than getting the 2003 and 2004 Tech games mixed up, where exactly have I “distorted facts”?
He does so here, at Double T Nation, and other SBN blogs
Are you stalking me? I’ve never had the inclination to take the time to see what blogs someone else is posting on. Regardless, you’re doing a poor job. The only two SBN blogs I frequent are BON and DTN. Saying I’m involved in this mass-spamming of blogs to provoke controversy is simply not true. Of course, telling the truth doesn’t fit into the agenda that you’re propagating here, does it?
Meanwhile he hasn’t commented at 12thmanchild in over a year.
If 12thManChild had talented writers updating their blog every day, and an active community, I would frequent their blog. As it is, I don’t see the point of reading a blog that is updated once a week, if not once a month (last update was on June 30), and thinks Antanas’ wedding pics taken from Facebook are newsworthy. I’d get just as much useless information from reading the football board at TexAgs.
Exactly how does this Fanpost contribute to the
preponderance of high minded discourseon this blog?
You’re not going to read my comments anymore. Congratulations!! Wonderful!!! You needed to write a post announcing this to everyone why?
Sounds more like you wanted to
engage in spiteful rhetoricand
bickeringto me.
But hey, don’t let me interrupt your hypocrisy.

Lack of moderation
Beergut, you’re more than welcome to comment here and I welcome your contributions. Sometimes, I disagree with you, and of course, can’t resist poking fun at your Aggie-ness.
I think the point, though, is that we’re in a summer rut right now where too many threads are back-and-forths between you and agitated readers. No one’s to blame, but I agree with the sentiment that… well, we could do without so much of it.
My suggestion to readers who disagree with the Gut is to pick their battles, lest we spend the rest of the summer arguing.
Kumbaya, anyone?

There is wisdom in your words, PB. One can only argue with this guy for so long...

FYI Beergut: This is the first result on a google image search.for “beergut”. The others are much, much worse.

ok
From now on, I’ll just say, “This will devolve into an argument of back-and-forth where neither is going to change the other’s mind, so we’ll just agree to disagree.”
Fair enough?

So...
What to do with our Aggie entertainer?
Obviously, we shouldn’t “ban” him. Beergut may say stuff that I think is nonsense sometimes, but at the least, I’ve never seen him do anything like, “LOL!!! UT SUX0RS!!! WE GET WAY MORE GIRLS THAN YOU111! COLT MCCOY LIKES LITTLE BOYS!” or other retarded things like that that we may expect from the average Aggie.
Secondly, disagreeing is part of these forums. The mere fact that discussions go back and forth without anyone agreeing is fairly common. Sure, people sometimes get a bit riled up, but I think the moderators do a good job of keeping things civil and the regular contributors here do a good job as well. I think BON has a reputation of having one of the best communities of all the related blogs, and I think it’s well-deserved. The fact that we welcome dissenters like Beergut here and converse with him civilly is a good mark of that, although we are certainly free to make fun of his Aggie-ness :). I think Beergut has to accept this if he’s going to come to this site as an Aggie. So Beergut, if we make “sheep” jokes and call you a moron Aggie from time to time, you’re going to have to deal with it. We deserve our fun at our own fansite.
As long as he doesn’t spam the site with crap like the examples above, I don’t mind him being around. I am, however, thinking it’d be funny for someone to make a new account with the name “Orange Beer Belly” or something and go pester people at 12thmanchild. And if they complain, just say you’re the evil twin of one of their own.

I reiterate my call
for an alternative to the two current comment “actions”: “Flag” or “Rec”. I’ve flagged Beergut for “aggie trolling” several times to no effect, though I admit it was stronger than I would have preferred. Can’t there simply be an opposite action to “Rec”, which instead of highlighting the comment and raising it up, would rather make the comment smaller, less intrusive, or perhaps just shunt it to the bottom of the comment pile? The icon could be just like the “Rec” one except with a down arrow, and it could be called… um… “Ag”?

really?
it’s not like their are 1,000 replies per post and you need a way to sort through the spam (aka youtube). I see more harm than good.

Any online community
gets awfully boring if everyone has nearly the same opinion, so I don’t mind the “others” around here. The only requirement in my mind is that the input of those not blessed to be associated with UT should incite conversation, not agression.

The BON site is the best I've ever found...
Try the SportingNews site… it gets ridiculous at times with some of the smack that get thrown around over there, most of it is just nonsense. I enjoy Beergut’s comments and find him to be insightful as well at times… at other times I disagree with him too, but I still enjoy reading him. Frankly, it takes a thick skin to be an Aggie on this site at times, I commend him for that, as I have to be thick skinned as a Longhorn fan since I live surrounded by Aggies as well.
If you want knowledgeable football discourse this is the site to be on, PB and Co. do a great job as does the BON community. So if want the good stuff where you can learn something come here… if you want “your QB is a x$^&&(^&%* ” go to other sites, they’ll give it to you.

I don't agree
I’m certainly not a large contributor to this site and I generally don’t get in arguments with people about sports, but I think Beergut is a good poster. Yes, he is AGGY but that’s a congenital defect and he can’t really be blamed for failings he has no control over.
Beergut makes the most effort out of anyone on this site to discuss the actual X’s and O’s of football. Granted, his view of football strategy is greatly colored by his creepy conservative aggro upbringing and at any given moment you expect him to start extolling the virtues of the four point stance and/or outlawing the forward pass, but he does make an effort to understand both offensive and defensive tactics and strategy rather than focusing exclusively on personnel as the rest of us tend to do. Personnel is important but scheme is just as (if not more) important, as the aggros showed us in collie station last year.
That said, he is still AGGY and therefore would not acknowledge a ‘Horn as the best college player ever even if he had the passing stats of Colt Brennan, the rushing stats of Barry Sanders, and the defensive stats of Charles Woodson. Once again, allowances must be made for genetic failure and I don’t think one should spend too much time dwelling on the ruthlessness of Mother Nature.
As a wise man once said: “The Dude abides.”
