Hook 'em sign - South Florida at it again
The website is The Wizard of Odds and is about college football. They are showing the football poster of various programs every week. They have the South Florida posters if you scroll down just a little ways.
Here is the link....... http://www.thewizardofodds.blogspot.com/
Check out the various posters - players and fans using the Hook 'em sign.
Now I know it's foolish to think we can stop them from using the sign that Texas has actually TRADEMARKED, but you would think we could nail them for using it on the posters!!!

Suing for a copywrited image
is different than suing for a hand jester IMO.
Are Norwegian devil worshipers going to sue us for using their hand jester?
Do you mean "gestures" Wells? or British puppets?

True
Any printed display is off limits. UT sure shut down that Bevo’s Restaurant on I-35. I guess the red eyes on their Longhorn sign didn’t differentiate it adequately (the name was also an issue). I’m not sure anyone minded the closure, as the place looked like a Shoney’s in disguise.
We don't?
Didn’t we sue the people in College Station that designed the “Saw’em Off” merchandise?

We need to schedule them and beat their brains in
And they will always know that that sign always means “Longhorns.” Nothing else.

Watch out with the link, I got a pic that was arguable NSFW.
Use this one which goes straight to the post itself.
As for USF, I don’t care, because I can’t help but feel sorry for a program that has Matt Grothe as their QB. I saw them play in the Sun Bowl last year, and he has the weakest arm I’ve ever seen. They got destroyed by Oregon…. without Dennis Dixon.
technically...
it’s a different hand sign. look at the way Matt Grothe is doing it in the third poster. that’s their official hand sign. instead of the thumb being over the middle fingers, pressing them against the palm, the middle fingers are instead somewhat extended with the thumb under them. those that are doing the Texas sign are just dumb or doing it by force of habit because the hook ‘em sign is so ubiquitous.
it’s an interesting question though whether the usage of the unofficial and incorrect sign on official posters is a trademark violation. it very well might be. since it’s another university though, i don’t imagine a lawsuit would be necessary. texas could probably just send a letter and get them to change it or to not do that in the future.
that explanation kind of reminds me
of vanilla ice explaining how the sample in “ice ice baby” is actually not the same as the riff from “under pressure.”
I was in Tampa a couple of weeks ago and saw these billboards. It actually doesn’t bother me that they’re doing it. What bothers me is that their numbskull fans will think they invented it.

Excellent comparison
that’s a hilarious video clip. i wish there were one with MC Hammer trying to explain how the bass line from Can’t Touch This was different from Superfreak, but whatever. i guess i can’t be greedy.
MC Hammer
gave Rick James co-author credit for the sample. Wikipedia.
Vanilla did not credit Bowie and Queen, which means no royalties for them.
well there you go, huh?
that slight wasn’t what caused Suge Knight to drape Vanilla Ice out a window and threaten to let go, was it? i can’t imagine Suge Knight taking up the cause of Bowie and Queen.
this is a tangent of epic proportions.
damn you south florida
you’ve taken our hand sign and turned it upside-down.
I really don't see what the big deal is
Everyone and their dog knows where the hand symbol got started and what it really means.
