Who else do you root for?
Just curious what everyone else thinks or roots for.....I'm only referring to football.

Just wondering if you really don't give a rat's ass or are you like me and cheer for whatever team is playing the Land Thieves University ?!?!
I cheer for:
Texas Tech - only when playing OU
A&M - only when playing OU
Baylor - I don't mind Baylor....I actually would like to see them become a winning program again. I think Briles is the man for the job. Will they become an 8-4 kind of team every year? No, but I think a bowl game every 3-4 years is possible. I look for Baylor to sneak up on at least one team this year - I'm not predicting a victory, but they will definitely scare somebody.
OU - Not a single chance in hell will I ever root for OU. I would rather root for USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc if OU ever met up with those teams. And that's not easy for me to say because I hate USC, ND, OSU.
Okie St - only when playing OU
I enjoy seeing Nebraska struggle (no disrespect to their great fans). Otherwise the North I don't cheer for any team but I don't have a strong hate for any of them either. But on the other hand it is nice watching Ron Prince and the Fightin' Manginos lose

The only way I root for anybody besides Texas, is if the win will benefit Texas!
by Longhorns84 on Jul 7, 2008 9:09 PM CDT 0 recs
exactly.
if i have to root for A&M to beat OU so that we can go to the Big 12 championship game, then that’s what I’m doing, and the other way around works too.
I hate Notre Dame but in 2005 I was hoping they would pull out the victory over USC that way we would be the unanimous number 1.
In all honesty, I almost always root for Navy, Army, and the Air Force Academies. Those schools all deserve to win. When Tech beat Navy in that disgraceful manner a couple of years ago, I was disgusted. But last year’s Navy victory over Notre Dame was awesome! And I also thouhgt it was great that A&M barely got by Army. This year I hope Army takes them out.

I root for Texas somtimes,
and most of the time I root for the underdog.
I think I almost get angrier when I see fans of team X root for team Y when team Y is playing Texas Tech, especially when they have no dog in the fight. Texas fans rooting for UTEP in 2006 represented a low point in my opinion of your school that took me nearly a year to get over. (Their explanation: It’s part of the University of Texas system? The fuck…?)
I root for Big-12 to varying degrees depending on how angry I am at a particular fanbase. I try to root for A&M in bowl games - obviously with little success - but find myself rooting against them most other times because their fans are so easy to hate, generally.
So, in this order:
Texas Tech
Anyone that will benefit Texas Tech by winning
Texas (until the fans convince me not to, once more, which is about every other season)
Rest of Big-12 minus A&M
Maybe A&M, if I haven’t visited TexAgs in a while
Underdogs
I cheer offense as well, conditioned well by the Captain of the ship.
by Skin Patrol on Jul 7, 2008 9:37 PM CDT 1 recs
Dude, UTEP has our fight song!
And they are the underdogs. I like seeing UTEP do well, irregardless of opponent.
Besides them, I root for:
A) Games that will benefit Texas in the regular season
ex1: I hope this Big 10 team beats that one so that we can climb to their spot in the BCS.
ex2: I hope Tech wins this game so that they will be undefeated when we beat them to make us look better.
B) I root for Big12 come bowl time. I know thats not always the popular decision, and its hard to do with aTm (THESE guys beat us?), but I always want Tech, Mizzou, Braska, KState, Okie Jr, and hell even Kansas to win. And if its not a MNC game, Ill even root for OU. Partly because in some small way it reflects well on Texas, and partly just because I know all those teams a lot better than the rest of the field.

Do the little red raiders need the longhorn fans to root for them to feel like their worth anything?

AHAHAHHAHAH AYOU MAKE JOKE IT FUNNY NICE MOVE
To answer your question, no the Red Raiders don’t need the Longhorns fans to root for them. We won the game.
It is not about self-worth and realizing that through the cheers of opposing fans. The fact that some drunken douche bag at a bar rooted for UTEP simply because he was surrounded by Tech fans, then justified that by saying UTEP was a part of the same academic system as he was, says absolutely nothing about Texas Tech, the Red Raiders, or how we justify ourselves. It says a lot about that particular individual, though.

Ease up a bit
We’re not talking about OU.
Tech certainly isn’t Texas, but it is far from a “poor, poor excuse” for a university. They’ve got some excellent academic programs, and their athletics have come a long way for the youngest brother of the main Texas schools.
Inflammatory BS like that just starts a flame war, things aren’t slow enough around here we need to go down that road.

In any event...
my “poor, poor excuse for a school” ultimately landed me a spot at the University of Texas Law School, which I doubt you think is a poor, poor excuse for a school.
As to why do I give a fuck that some guy is cheering for the opposing team… Because I love College Football? When someone else roots against my team, I have a problem with them. Don’t you?
When I show up to DKR dressed as a Red Raider, a bunch of UT fans apparently “give a fuck” about who I’m cheering for. As a fan of CFB, I respect them for it.

If somebody is pulling for the opposing team, its their choice…and when they start talkin shit, thats when I begin to have a problem with them, but its not because they re sitting there whooping, or yellin sick ‘em bears or whatever the hell…getting pissed because not everybody in the country bleeds burnt orange would not show that I love cfc any more than the next guy…
...And you are correct, The University of Texas Law School is a fine academic institution

I always root for Texas Tech
unless they’re playing Texas or them losing will benefit Texas somehow. I’ve always had a soft spot for the raiders, even pre-leach. and i have a serious man-crush on the good captain, so that helps. went out to lubbock both tech-texas games when i was in college. one year i used this tech student’s ID and sat in the student section and felt like i might get beaten to death at any moment . it was pretty sweet.
beyond that, i root for places my dad has worked/taught: Indiana, Stanford, and UH. Also, if NYU (my law school) had a football team, i’d totally be all over that. C’mon guys, Columbia has a football team! Of course, their mascot isn’t the Violets.

My rooting order
Texas and whatever benefits Texas
Notre Dame to lose
Virginia
Illinois
by Texas Wahoo on Jul 7, 2008 10:08 PM CDT 0 recs
I love that
I cannot stand Notre Dame. I root against them no matter who they are playing, except if they play UO.
I once worked with a UO fan in Alabama and he asked me in 2003 if I would root for UO over LSU in the MNC game. I told him where to stick it,.
I guess the teams I root for are like this:
-Texas, and as many have said, anything that benefits the Horns. Seriously, there is no greater feeling in the world than being a Longhorn fan. No greater privilege!
-Tennessee, if you havent enjoyed a Saturday in Knoxville and an evening at Neyland, its a lot of fun. Plus the two times I have gone to Neyland the people have been some of the nicest…offered us food and drink just to hang out and BS with them. Awesome!
-Any underdog that isnt playing Texas, its just fun to watch the team with no chance according to the ESPN “experts” give a superior team a run for their money(case in point was the Mich-App St game I was ever so lucky to attend last year)
I really just love watching college football, the sounds, the excitement and the fact that one or two losses can “ruin” a season. I love that!
My adopted son, Lamarr Houston, once beat up Chuck Norris. Now thats a bad ass!

Texas
and more Texas. Other than that I root for all underdogs in every other conference to keep the pollsters guessing. With roots in the SWC, and now the Big 12, I am looking forward to the national emergence of Missouri and I wish a couple other squads in the north would carry there weight as well. I’m really tired of hearing how great the SEC is year in and year out, and really tired of USC’s pac 10 conference getting so much love.

West Virginia
during the Pat White era has been fun to watch. I feel like they’ve run into a lot of bad luck over the past 2 years. The offense is ridiculous.
by owenh on Jul 7, 2008 11:19 PM CDT 0 recs
Texas is obvious
any team playing ou, notre dame, ohio state, duke(their fans were chanting USC at Madison Square Garden when it was #1 vs #2 in bball, just before the Rose Bowl) LSU, k-state(want revenue sharing, aka take UT’s money) and missouri(b/c chase daniel looks like the dick-in-a-box guy)....
by SneezyBeltran on Jul 7, 2008 11:28 PM CDT 0 recs
Texas, obviously, and whatever will benefit the horns the most.
I have a hard time pulling for Tech, being in Lubbock, I pretty much hope that they lose every game unless it will benefit the horns. Same can be said for A&M and OU.
I hate Miami and pull for whoever they’re playing in most cases, unless they’re playing one of the 3 teams listed above.

Glad to know
There will be another Longhorn in Lubbock this fall. I’m starting grad school there, and I’m not at all looking forward to being surrounded by Red Raiders. Can’t wait for the ‘Horns to come to town, though!

I root for coaches
I root for Florida b/c of Urban Meyer, South Carolina b/c of Spurrier, USC b/c of Spurrier, Penn State (when not playing A&M) b/c of JoePa. I’m rooting for Michigan now that RichRod is there.

Watching games with non-Horns
gave me some odd teams to root for, if just so I don’t have to be around someone who is pissed for an afternoon.
So I cheer for:
LSU- Livin’ in Ess Eee Cee country
UNC- Saw 3 Carolina games last year, which seems like more than most actual Tar Heels.
BC- Possibly the most boring good team in college football
Notre Dame- Actually, that guy’s abject misery became pretty entertaining.
Tulane- Like Baylor, any game they lead at halftime is considered a win by fans.
In non conference play- I’ll root for any Big 12 team other than Baylor and OU.
In conference- I root for Tech and occasionally aTm, provided my dad is the only former Ag I’ve talked to recently.

Texas
I attend the University of Houston, but I’ve always rooted for the Longhorns.
THE University of Texas
University of Houston
Notre Dame (Hey, growing up watching college football..they were always on)
Army (Beat Navy!)
Situational cheering:
AnM against OU
OK St against OU
Tech against pretty much anyone
by Broward on Jul 8, 2008 12:37 PM CDT 0 recs
UT #1, then I root for upsets.
I cheer for the Big 12 teams in bowl play.
After the Horns I usual pull for upsets or the underdogs. I root for Illinois (my grad school).
I’ll also root with my friends for their teams if it doesn’t mean rooting against UT. Usually that includes ASU, Louisville, UTenn, Air Force, LSU, and a few others.
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.
Is it football season YET?
by Speedway on Jul 8, 2008 12:44 PM CDT 0 recs
I don’t have any real rhyme or reason for the teams I root for… some are because of a friend, some a coach, some a former player…
The teams I root against I’m usually pretty clear on the why. I always root against aTm, because… well, because I’ve met aggies. I grew up disliking ND and Ohio State, because they benefited so egregiously from media/poll bias – the ultimate example, of course, being Ara playing for the tie vs. Mich. St. in ‘66 and then going into the post-game locker room to politic. And that working out for him!!!
The teams I usually root for:
Tennessee – they gave us Sam Houston, we gave them Neyland… so their orange is kind of hideous, they’re still “a” (as opposed to “the”) UT.
Tech – Leach just makes me laugh… plus – after all the caterwauling from the Bay Area, just how sweet was the Holiday Bowl beatdown???
and, although ESPN has almost managed to ruin this one for me, I always used to root for USC. I started waaaaay back when I was a kid watching OJ, back when he was a smiling and personable superstar, instead of a ‘successful’ defendant…
Michigan I’ve always had a soft spot for, ever since they beat tOSU in ‘69 to open the door for us.
I think I could grow fond of Florida, they seem so similar to us in so many ways… I just have an almost visceral dislike for Urban… not sure why.

Secret pleasures
One of the most satisfying games was when Arkansas played OU in the Orange Bowl. This was the one where the Hogs had some players kicked off the team and seemed destined to lose. Then they kicked the living shit out of OU. I spent the whole second half laughing out loud.
So, I will root for some teams out of ‘lesser of two evils’ mode, although I’ve found rooting for A&M when Texas and/or Big 12 would be enhanced by a win is totally frustrating, ‘cause the aggies aren’t reliable in that situation.
I never root for Miami, irregardless. I do root for Rice, because I’ve always liked them. I never root for Notre Dame and seldom for tOSU. I always favor Colorado State over CU, just to piss them off. I like Oregon, have for decades, for no good reason.
I’ll root for Tech on many occasions; hell, there’s even a Texas Tech-Highland Lakes, they’re thick around here. Old SWT I’d root for but not Texas State. I’d root for Texas A&I if either it or Coach Gil Steinke was still around but he’s gone to the big bleachers in the sky.
The one compelling situation where I had to choose between OU and tOSU and I went with OU at the Buckeyes; this was when tOSU tried to ice the kicker but failed when he nailed it in the final seconds. You’re dining with the devil on some of these types of games.
by whills on Jul 8, 2008 1:21 PM CDT 0 recs
I read about that game, then saw it on ESPN Classic
Von Schauman(?), the OU kicker, conducting the Buckeye fans in the “block that kick!!” chant before nailing it to win the game was absolute greatness.
Barry Switzer and the wishbone versus Woody Hayes and his power-I option offense; simply a great game to watch.

Yes, I drop a lot of parochial feelings
for great games. That was a fun game with a classic ending; the kicker was truly bodacious and egged on the crowd.
I’ll also add I occasionally watch East Carolina because they seem to have had a series of innovative coaches. Sometimes I do watch games just because of the coaches, especially younger ones who seem like they’re headed up the ladder.

“I’d root for Texas A&I if either it or Coach Gil Steinke was still around but he’s gone to the big bleachers in the sky.”
Oh yeah! Absolutely rooted for the Javelinas! Steinke was a purely classy individual. My dad taught at A&I when he was young, and he had a great story about Steinke. Basically, Gil started the year telling all the new teachers if they had any problems at all with one of his players to call him. My dad says he took that with a huge grain of salt… but at one point had a minor issue and decided to take Coach Steinke up on that… Suffice it to say, you will never hear anything bad about the man from my dad. Actually, I’ve never heard anything bad about him from anyone…

Gil Steinke: one of the great Texas coaches.
My basketball watching buddy up here went to A&I in the late 60s after serving in ‘Nam. He played a little basketball there, but not long. He wound up tutoring many of the football players and has some great stories from that period. He thought Steinke was amazingly cool coach.
If you compared his teams to UT, Steinke was close a couple of years, the difference not being in the first teams but just the depth. In one year alone, A&I had 11 players drafted by the NFL. I remember a Sports Illustrated front page story asking Who’s the best team in Texas? in the late 60s comparing UT and A&I.
There was a game in the NFL, Redskins I think, where they had an all A&I DBs on the field at once. My buddy said that has never happened with another school but I never tried to validate that.

I went to several UH/Rice games
when I lived in Houston for a couple of years. At Rice Stadium you could get great seats almost anywhere you wanted. Saw one in the series on a day when it was on the edge of sleeting that was a shootout, with a great hide-out play to boot. Don’t remember the score but about 80-90 points scored; great fun.

re: UH and Kentucky…
It’s a funny thing, I liked UH’s basketball teams (Phi Slamma Jamma!!!) but I hated their football team in the ‘70s. Conversely, I don’t mind KY’s football team (loved their big upset this year!), but I hate, hate, hate their basketball team…
There are several teams like that for me, root for one sport, but not another… Is that just me, or is anyone else like that???

Rooting in order
Texas always…
Raiders, Aggies, SMU, TCU, Rice, U of H when not playing Texas (old SWC thing)
Auburn… I like Tubberville
Michigan
Rutgers
All BIG XII teams in their bowl games unless it hurts Texas.
I can’t stand OU, ND, Cal, Miami
Reasoning: OU on principle except in bowls because of how it reflects on the conference, ND because theybeat the Longhorns in Earl’s Sr. Year and I really just don’t like them, Cal because they are whiny babies (I so enjoyed Tech destroying them in the Holiday Bowl), and Miami because of their lopsided victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl in the 90’s and their basic arrogance/thuggishness (which they seem to be correcting now).

I’ve always had a soft spot for TCU. Maybe its the Mascot.
And Rice for the MOB.
For a moment there I was a big Boise State fan.
In the PAC-10 I like Stanford and Oregon. And Fresno State down the road.
And I know this won’t go down well around here, but when they aren’t playing Texas, I root for Texas Tech.

Boise State, Ole Miss, New Mexico
responsible for the most embarrassing moment in OU (maybe college) football history,
Dixie still proudly played,
can’t wait to go to Oxford (one of the ugliest stadiums though!)
i hate any team that is orange and blue (there are many, what were they thinking?)
too bad no big name team is purple and gold (sorry LSU, that’s yellow) (is TCU
officially purple and gold?, Northwestern?)
