Texas Themed Xbox360 Arcade Stick

This is kind of off topic, but oh well, I thought people might enjoy it irregardless.

With Soul Calibur 4 recently coming out, and Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter 2 HD on the horizon, I wanted to make an arcade quality stick for Xbox360.

So I went to create a Texas themed stick I called "Texas Fight", due both to the cheer you all know so well, and the pugilistic nature of the games for which it is designed to be used.

So anyway, here was the process.

Or if all you want is the end result, here are the final pics:

Nice work

As an artist and sometimes handy-with-projects guy I really enjoyed “the process.” One question: How are you protecting the “photo print” graphic? Lamination? I did digital printing professionally for a few years and many laminates would eventually scuff and degrade in this application. A thin layer of clear polycarbonate would be durable, but would have to be buffed with a plastic polish from time to time. If the ink used in printing is solvent-based, perhaps a nice coat or two of a water-based gloss varnish would do. Anyway, very entertaining article.

Thanks!

Currently its just printed on photo paper, then covered by the 1/8” thick plexiglass (well acrylic, I think plexi is actually a brand name). I didnt do anything additional to protect the graphic though I have head of people laminating. Very similar to putting a printed out photo in a frame. Except that your hands will touch the protective covering a lot.

Personally I just printed it out at work using photo paper, so if it starts to degrade I could replace it. The top panel is on permanently, but the acrylic is held on solely by the buttons, which could be removed.

It would be a minor pain to replace the graphic, but wouldnt take more than 15 minutes since the buttons are all hand screwed on, and are connected with quick disconnects to the electronics.

Sure

Acrylic (brand name Plexiglass) should do the trick. Polycarbonate (brand name Lexan) is more durable against breakage – used for sign faces and even bullet-proof windows; probably overkill in this case. If the acrylic gets scratched there are products to re-polish the surface should you wish. Again, enjoyed the whole project.

I have heard

Not tested myself, that while lexan is tougher against brittle failure, plexi is harder, and thus scratches less.

I havent done any tests myself, I’m sure it will get a scratched eventually though.

Thanks again!
