Open Game Thread: Second Half--Florida Atlantic vs Texas

Fau_at_texas_helmets_medium

Texas leads Florida Atlantic 28-10 at the half, thanks to two timely turnovers by the defense and a masterful first half from Colt McCoy. Though there have been problems, and the young have made their mistakes, overall the half has to be considered a big success.

Players who impressed in the first half

Blake Gideon
Colt McCoy
Vondrell McGee
Chris Ogbonnaya
Blaine Irby
Greg Davis

So far, it's been the Colt McCoy show

I wanted to see what Chiles could do at WR/RB but didn’t see much. Hopefully he can give us some excitement in the 2nd half.

Thoughts...

Colt – Could not have played better. Literally perfect.
Irby – Exciting. Gives me a lot more confidence in our chances on 3rd down.
McGee – Solid, tough runner. Still want to see him against better athletes though.
Receivers – No one stood out, good or bad.
Defense – Ate up the run, lots of loose coverage, missed tackles. With FAU’s scheme, we’re not gonna get many sacks. I’m thinking we’ll see more man coverage, since they are getting rid of the ball so fast.

by ctex80 on Aug 30, 2008 8:03 PM CDT reply actions

Crush'em

It’d be nice if we could crush’em by midway in Q4 and experiment with personnel and plays afterwards.
GD seems to be forgetting the running game.

Hook'em

You tend to do that

when your QB has not missed on a pass yet.

by Wells on Aug 30, 2008 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they have been experimenting since the game began.

Agree about the running game, but I think that was as much about intimidation as game plan.

Zone

Does it look like they are trying get the d experience in zone coverage???

by Longhorny on Aug 30, 2008 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

We've mixed it up

The interception in the end zone was a ginormous zone drop that led to the tipped ball.

Guys

This ain’t no party… this ain’t no disco… this ain’t no Arkie State Game. I love the O, the D is now in “maturing” mode. These boys in the secondary are gonna get schooled, glad it’s happening against FAU and not OU.

You know, if GD is indeed freed, he’s gotta adjust, also.

Happy for McCoy

A lot of us—myself included—have rode him hard when he’s struggled. Hey, that’s life as the Texas QB.

But it’s really great to see him come out and shine like this tonight. Very, very impressive.

just came back from the game

my thoughts:

Colt did great, he scrambled well, but took some hits
Offense overall is very good
Kirkendoll and Johnson impressed
Defense needs work…….FAU racked up alot of pass yards against us

Someone asked about the stadium and how it looks….It wasnt sold out (thsi game)
but it looked great. Was loud, but not that looud. New student section is not bad, not a bad view

No Sacks?

where was the pass rush? It better show up before the horns get into the meat of the schedule. With out a pass rush this secondary is gonna get reamed by Missouri, Tech and OU to the tune 400+ passing yards. Staking those three teams six scores because of a poor secondary is a hard row to hoe.
