I am staring 0-12 in the face
and I am undaunted.
New Mexico, Miami, Army, all are capable of beating us.
Okie State, Kansas State, Iowa State, all can look at our game as an almost-guaranteed win (almost-guaranteed b/c their team could be involved in a massive bus accident, killing everyone, which would give us a win via forfeit. Hey, it COULD happen. And I could win the lottery).
Our game with Baylor looks like it will be Cripple Fight 2008 to determine who gets to occupy the Big 12 cellar for this season.
We lost to Arkansas Fucking State. Wow.
I have no words.
Say whatever you want. Bring it on. Nothing can hurt me now.
I have no words.

the "whatever" i want to say:
Your team is going to suck for the eternity. Sherman will leave after 4 disastrous years, and unlike Fran he will leave aggies with no talent whatsoever. While this happening, high school players see the Sherman crap, and no one can lure them back to aggieland.

interesting that you say this
unlike Fran he will leave aggies with no talent whatsoever
I think Fran completely left the cupboard bare on the offensive line.
Yes, we have RBs galore, but how talented your RBs are doesn’t matter if there is no one to block for them.
I’m not sure if you can leave a program in a worse state, talent-wise, than Fran did.

Look at his recruiting
If you believe Rivals ranking (which i do), Fran sure did a much better recruiting compared to Sherman’s 2009.

Not only that...
… you lost a pretty darn good kicker in the offseason. Any idea where Matt Szymanski ended up transferring to?

he's at SMU
Don’t know if he was “pretty damn good”, he was fairly inconsistent in his time at A&M.
I’m fairly certan he could hit some of those chipshots we missed Saturday, though.

Yeah.
That falls under the heading of “hating them more than you love yourself”.
You should always enjoy your team winning more than you enjoy a rival losing.

I am a UT graduate...so don't beat me up
I have a relative that plays for the school so I am going to sick my neck out here.
This is just the first game of the season for A&M. They made some very costly mistakes last night and they definitely need to work on some things but they will improve. A&M had nine first time starters (three non-scholarship players) last night. New coach, new offense. There were some good things…Featherton- 16 tackles, I believe. He has a lot of promise.
Don’t give up yet.

we had some troubles with AKstate last year too. now, we didn’t do anything remarkable stupid like, say, lose to them, but in aTm’s defense, AK state is not a terrible team.

Arkansas State took us to the wire last year and that game was a harbinger of things to come for us… but they beat you guys! I was shocked and this does not look good.
However, if Sherman is a good coach, and I think he is, you all will recover from this. Don’t let Ark. St. beat you twice. BTW, I say this with sincere kindness… we are gonna whup you guys good this year. You’ve got it coming.
BTW, in my opinion you are a great guy for coming on here and taking this… hats off to you (or “uncover!” whichever you prefer).
Really, I hope it gets better for you guys.

Well, I wondered if you would come over.
I’m glad you did, I respect that, but I realize it’s tough as hell. Although all the ags I know have a knack and a great capacity for suffering.
Do you think Sherman doesn’t have the players to populate his desired offense? Or were they just not up the learning curve far enough to be effective? If ‘no’ to the first, will he simplify to an offense in which they can be effective for what they have? Or will he pigheadedly persist?
The defense kept the game within reach (that is, 18 points is not bad but I didn’t see the game), so that seems not to be an unmitigated disaster.
Hey, y’all’ll win at least three games, maybe 5-6. Stop being such a sob story.
If I can put four l’s in a row, anything can happen. Anything.

of course I'll come over
A&M is my team, win, lose, or embarrass the shit out of me.
I don’t think we really have the offensive line to populate most offensive schemes, to be honest. I have gone on record as not being a fan of the pro-style, pro-set, WCO scheme. EVERY defensive coordinator I know draws up his base defense to stop a pro-style offense first, everything else second. I think running a pro-style offense makes it easier on opposing defenses. I think you need a significant talent advantage ala USC to make a pro-style offense work. We don’t have anything close to that particular advantage right now, so I’d prefer to see us run something else, like a spread, to take advantage of the athletes we do have.
When you’re resorting to using backup QBs as WRs, you have problems. You have bigger problems when those backup QBs are your best receivers.
To answer your question, though, I do not think Sherman will switch to a different scheme. I think he is wedded to his pro-style offense, unfortunately for us.
The defense gave up over 400 yds of total offense and was completely dominated everywhere except the scoreboard. This spells trouble for when we face teams with real offenses.
Depending on how much we improve between now and next week, we may have a chance with New Mexico, but I’m not sure. They run a 33 Stack defense we’ll never see again this season, and we have no offensive line to speak of.
Army looks like it may be our next best chance at a win. Other than those two games, I don’t see anything else.
If we can learn to eliminate turnovers, it would help a lot, but that wasn’t the whole story this weekend. The turnovers mask the fact that Arkansas State pretty much dominated us.

to be fair
the problems in San Antonio were due more to a coaching staff who was clueless about how to beat inferior opponents
Fran honestly believed as long as you were one point better than your opponent, any win was a good win.
It remains to be seen what to think of this coaching staff, though.

I, for you, hope you pull together some offense
realizing, of course, that a weak OL is harbinger for big trouble.
If this offense can’t get off track, I hope he modifies it.
Thanks for the answers.

OLD COACHES
aren’t the way to go these days. If you decide to have an older head coach, you have to compliment them with young offensive and defensive coor. (new/fresh ideas).
by Longhorns84 on Sep 1, 2008 8:44 AM CDT 0 recs
They may not (or probably won't) go to a bowl game
But they’ll win a handful. While I and other Longhorns are a bit amused by their Arkansas St. loss, I have hard time imagining an 0-12 season. And while there would be a certain comedy being the team that cements their winless season, it’d also be a bit dull and embarrassing for the Big 12.
by TheElusiveShadow on Sep 1, 2008 3:41 PM CDT 0 recs
Yeah, aggie lost.....
…and your a grand fellow for taking some shots for it, but you knew it was coming, right? I mean, after Fran, surely you didn’t expect there to be anything seriously effective there? “IF” Sherman is the good coach he is suppose to be, it will take him two years to shake all the “Fran” out of that program.
The one constant I see in 90% of aggie fans I meet or know is that they believe the schools athletic dept. actually stands toe to toe with top Div. I programs. I say “why”? Where is there anything besides an occasional SWC title that lends any real validity to the thought? Yes, the baseball team is competitive and the basketball team gets ranked, but what have they done? They hate UT so much that they play over their heads when they play us and think if they win (back to back currently) they had a great season. I’d have more respect if they played everyone the same rather than get up, stacked and burned trees and Zieg Heil before Thanksgiving every year.
An aggie friend of mine bought a new truck. He didn’t put an A&M sticker on it, he put a “Saw’em Off” logo that takes up his whole rear window! It’s thinking like that that keeps the aggies from being better than they are. Hatred for Texas is a higher priority than supporting the team. Great tradition, just twisted and invalid.
It would be better for all Big 12 teams for the aggies to bump there class and level of play up a notch or two. Baylor does more for the Big 12 class-wise than the aggs.
I didn’t get to see them play, but I hope Sherman scrapped the triple option offense. Very High School. Judging by the outcome, it may still live in College Station. Good luck with the rest of your season, and i mean it. I want your team to be a challenge everytime we play, and I want to win the game. But more than anything, I want your school to find some class. They bring out the worst in me.

I agree with you 100%. I am a first year medical student at ATM medical school (they chose me, but i bleed burnt orange), and the level of hatred of these people is freaking redonkulous!!
For instance
—Instead of wearing a A&M shirt to the game, about 85% of the people wear “saw’em off” shirts to the games. Yes, to these people,
Hatred for Texas is a higher priority than supporting the team.
—A&M brags about their tradition and calls UT out for not having a tradition. When will these people realize that THE tradition at UT is WINNING!!

Bear in mind
In Dan Hawkins first game at CU, they lost to division 1-AA Portland State at home. In year two, he beat a either 2- or 3- ranked OU (also at home). CU is going to be in the top tier in the Big-12 north in a couple more years, possibly even next year.
AGGY is almost always delusional and expects to win every game, especially at home. However their cupboard is completely bare at the moment. If Sherman can start competing with Tech and Mizzou for the second tier of Texas talent, they’ll be back. In theory they could even compete with UT and OU for recruits.
I’ve always thought that TAMU was a natural competitor to OU for recruits, moreso than it is UT, because both schools are located in semirural (Collie station moreso than Norman) conservative redneck towns that, if not for football, would have basically no African-Americans in them. Austin is liberal and urban, and actually has a nightlife beyond “get drunk at the team safehouse” the exact opposite of Norman and College Station. For any player that cares about non-football related things while in college, there’s no reason to consider both UT and OU/TAMU.
Admittedly in our current culture many players are more concerned about things like playing time, tv exposure, and draft status than they are about their college experience, which is why UT and OU still battle for a lot of players.

Last season
was the most successful year A&M has ever had in the BIG 12.
I only mention this because you’re throwing in athletic department instead of football program. A&M won the Lone star showdown. Now I know that’s a croc of sh** but it means something. The womens soccer team has won back to back to back to back Big 12 championships. A&Ms athletic program is doing very very well.
Unfortunately, all we care about is football and maybe basketball and if we get bored enough in the offseason, baseball. We all know this is a shame but it’s just how it is. I’m only saying that if you look at the entire aggie athletics program, they’re doing well. Now, football, they’re in a decline, but hey, that’s just how it goes.
I’m not saying that A&M is as good as UT or other “top tier programs” as a whole but they also aren’t doing bad. If you remove the football blinders you can see how their other programs have excelled in the past decade monumentally.
I only bring this up because of the broadening of the subject from football to athletic programs.
