Houston has no history of being a trouble maker. He’s a college kid who was celebrating the victory and he made a mistake. There needs to be stern, swift punishment, but no need to fire up the electric chair.

Ala Kindle and Melton last season.

I will be shocked if he is kicked off the team. Yes, drinking and driving is a huge deal and Houston deserves to be punished but this is the first time he’s been in trouble, the precedent of three games has already been set, and Muschamp will probably make the next few months the most painful of his life.

Anyway, for the people that think kicking him off the team will “send a message”, you really think THAT of all things will suddenly prevent other players/students from drinking and driving (as opposed to numerous reports of drunk driving related deaths)? The only message it’ll send is try to focus better when you’re driving drunk so you don’t get caught.

At best, it’ll be a wake-up call to the other players, but it’s not going to stop them from drinking and driving, seeing how a bunch of other UT students do the same. Ideally, it would “send a message”, but months from now the message will have been deleted from their inbox.

growing up in austin, I can say that I think it’s just too tough for these kids to be local celebs in a crazy fun party town like austin especially when they come from po-dunk, TX. it’s not easy to stay out of trouble there. too many temptations.

APD has a long history of bias against UT students in general and UT athletes in particular. See, e.g., the trumped up, baseless, and uterly false charges of assault against Chiles this summer. Given APD’s track record, Houston may only be guilty of driving while black.

Were you there? Are you qualified to administer field sobrietey tests? Are you qualified to interpret the results of a field sobriety test? Do you know what horizontal gaze and stagmus is? Are you a judge in Travis county that’s heard the evidence against him? Has Houston had the benefit of counsel in open court? If the answer to any of these questions is no, then you don’t know he’s guilty.

tough decision

Assuming Houston is guilty of what is indeed a serious offense, the unfortunate reality is that coaches have to walk a fine line in meting out punishments. True, it is important to set an example for other players, fans, and the general public, but at the same time coaches are held responsible for how well their teams perform on the field even more than off. Without question, Houston is one of our best players on a thin defensive line, and booting him off the team could cause an uproar if Texas drops a lot of close games this year. This, coupled with the fact that Houston has no prior history of this kind of behavior AND the precedent that has been set in the past with Melton and Kindle, means that a 3-game suspension is the “correct” punishment as far as I’m concerned.

Any further problems on Houston’s part, however, should result in him being kicked off. I don’t expect that this will be a problem when everything shakes out.

Assuming he is guilty, (last time i said i thought he was guilty got everyone a little…angry?) anyway, three game suspension will probably be the correct course of action. kicking him off the team as sc99p suggested is a bit premature at this point considering he is a first time offender.

by the way, isn’t it ken ruckers job to make sure things like this don’t happen? Not to clear on that. Is he in charge of all the players or just the freshman?

What I meant was that DUI’s are pretty self explanatory misdemeanors. If he was being charged with say burglary (ring any bells?), I wouldn’t automatically assume that he was guilty because it is a crime that isn’t quite as straight forward as a DUI. I assume that they had evidence to support their actions and would not have arrested him otherwise. Of course the phrase “i assume” is fairly ignorant of myself, I am choosing to assume the worse out of the situation and prepare for upcoming events of the season and not blindly hope that he will be proven innocent by a jury.

Is that given the circumstances that it his highly unlikely that it was made up. look at the circumstances, he was driving around at three in the morning on a Saturday night after a win partying with his friends. I am not saying that every time there is a crime the police are right, I am saying that given the circumstances in this particular offense that he is more than likely guilty.
With what I know I wouldn’t charge guilty as a jury, but as a bi standard it looks to me as if he is guilty.
That is all i was trying to say, and people took it as if i said “What the police say goes.” and that wasn’t the point I was trying to get across.

You can be arrested on the charge

For two very regular reasons:

1) Not agreeing to take the field sobriety tests which is a common response for many reasons including:

2) You techincally only have to fail one sobriety test to get yourself arrested, and the horizontal gaze and stagmus test in particular is completely based on the word, intepretation, and expertise of the officer giving it. Not the least to mention that its very possible to have outside influences affect the results of the test. In addition, the other tests while a possilbe indicator of DUI, are also not conclusive on their own. Which is why in general, the results do not hold up in court on their own, because they are not sufficient evidence of guilt.

So I still maintain, while they may be just reason to be arrested on the charge of DUI, guilt is still strictly up to the court to decide, even in a DUI. Or its even possible that he was unjustly arrested, which does happen, afterall police are fallible humans just like everyone else.

Im not saying that he was innocent, and Im not saying that there wasnt sufficient evidence to arrest him. All I am saying, is that in a murder, drug possession, copyright infringment, prostitution, treason, or even DUI, being arrested is not proof of guilt.

No place for this if he is guilty. I say “if” due to the fact that he is innocent until proven guilty.

If he is guilty then in order to be fair, he needs to get exactly what Kindle and Melton got. After that no mercy, you are out. I hope Muschamp makes an example out of him… maybe it will be the last time he ever gets into trouble.

That medical mistakes kill more people a year as well. Misapplied drugs due to similar labels, or misread prescriptions/charts and the like. 100,000 a year according to the star of Dragonheart.

I dont know where his figures are from though, but car accidents are no where near the top killer in America.

I'm a bit surprised with some reactions here

It’s a DUI. He didn’t assault anyone or steal anything. He made a decision to drive home while tipsy (and really, many college students have done that), and he got caught. It’s dangerous and it’s stupid, and he should be punished, but there’s already precedent for that, and it does not include completely booting him off the team.

He’ll get suspended at least a game, possibly three, and then it’s done. We don’t even know if he’s guilty. Obviously, if he does something like this again, the consequences will be greater, but it’s a first time offense.
