when in Rome.....
I’m not sure if what you’re saying is a bad thing. On here, people refer to Aggies as “Aggy” or worse. It is to be expected on a blog hosted by fans of a rival institution. Similarly, on an Aggie blog, you’re going to see references to “t.u.” and “t-sips”. This is part of the spirit of the rivalry, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

Correction
people refer to Aggies as "Aggy"
You misspelled it, it’s “aggy”.
It’s our way of mocking an institution whose ex-president, the current Secretary of Defense of The United States of America, refuses to refer to our school as anything other than “t.u”.
As with many things aggy, Gates takes it a few steps beyond “the spirit of the rivalry”.

interesting
I never kept up with Gates enough to notice how he referred to texas, honestly.
Do you prefer $Bill’s usage of “our friends in Austin”?
The problem with “Aggy” or “aggy” is that when you say it, it does not sound any different from saying “Aggie”, so it fails as a derogatory term, imo.

Interesting take
Almost like repeatedly not capitalizing Texas whenever you post here. I guess that fails as a derogatory term as well.
Congrats on the new blog. As enjoyable as it was to watch the 12th Manchild flounder, it’d be nice to get some “aggy” discourse on SBN. May we live together in relative harmony.
Quick question, beergut: Not sure if you caught the Robert Griffin show on Friday. I know it was just against Washington State, but I’m wondering if, as an Aggie fan, you’re a little bit worried that Baylor (!) may overtake you in the Big XII South pecking order.
It looks pretty clear that OU and Texas are doing the 1-2 dance annually (although admittedly, OU is taking the lead more often than not). Texas Tech (as much as you hate them) is two-stepping its way into the top 25 yearly as well. Oklahoma State definitely has the recruiting advantage, the offensive advantage, and a coach that at least knows how old he is (which is to say, significantly younger than Joe Kines).
Even if I weren’t looking at this through burnt orange-tinted glasses, it seems clear that A&M is no better than 5th in this line-up. And after watching Robert Griffin look like the second coming of VY (sorry, Jerrod Johnson), I’m thinking the Briles outlook is much clearer than the Sherman’s. Just a gut pre-Ike thought I had.
Any theories as to how the next four years (or three, if Robert Griffin is indeed VY-good) are going to turn out?

I differentiate between texas and Texas
One is a school, one is my native State. That more than anything is the reason for the spelling.
I’m not worried about Baylor overtaking us, nor Tech or Oklahoma State. It is similar to when OU was suffering under the Blake regime. While Blake sucked as his sucknificence extended to his teams, it didn’t take away the advantages OU posessed as a program, i.e. winning tradition, multiple national championships, storied history. Similarly, Baylor can have an electric player leading their offense (and I really like Griffin), but it doesn’t change the disadvantages they face as a program. I think Briles is a very good coach for Baylor, b/c he brings an innovative offensive attack that should draw fans to watch them play, but he won’t be able to fix their defense overnight. I don’t think the OU-texas 1-2 dance is as clear as you think. Look at it this way: If A&M had beaten Tech the last two years, I believe we would have been #2 in the South, behind OU. I’ll worry about OSU if and when they start beating us consistently. I’ll worry about Tech when they are actually ranked at the end of the season every year, not just half the time.
I guess it depends on your outlook. I think A&M under Sherman is going to get better, and continue to improve as a program. While I think the eventual improvement of Baylor will make the Big 12 South tougher, and the Big 12 overall a better conference, I think A&M is going to move forward, and start challenging OU for Big 12 supremacy.

Ive written Aggy
But never meant or intended it to be derogatory. Its what you call yourselves, so its what I call you as well. I had no idea it was meant to be derogatory in any other sense than referring to anyone who went to aTm is considered derogatory. Is the spelling difference really what makes it an insult as opposed to a title?
I also agree t-sips and t.u. is always just dumb, and to me always reeked more of ignorance than insolence. I remember the first time I was called a t-sip directly by an Aggy, I was just confused, and didn’t understand. I’m not sure that I understand that one to this day. I get the t.u. thing, at least, I understand what they are trying to do with it, not that its insulting one bit, again just looked like stubborn ignorance to me. There is indisputable evidence that our name is The University of Texas, so, I guess enjoy fighting that fight?
Its as if someone in real life began calling me something that wasn’t inflammatory, just not my name, like Bill or Eggplant, I would just consider that stupid and a poor attempt at an insult, if that’s really what it is, I’m still not sure.

IIRC
“Aggy” was started on hornfans.com as an answer to “t-sip”. Their explanation was that “Aggie” wasn’t an appropriate singular form for Aggies.

I'd take...
…Gates over any past SecDef in the past 20 years. He’s a heck of a leader!!

Don't understand the t.u. thing
Whenever I here an Aggie say “t.u.” or “t-sips” it just reeks of insecurity. I don’t really know why you would say it. It personally doesn’t offend me or bother me. It shows, to me, that you have an inferiority complex.

A&M sites
They don’t seem to use the web as much as other groups. Most seem to post at that Aggie forum but that’s about it. I wish him well.

actually, texags.com was one of the first sports forums devoted entirely to one school
Aggies have been slow to flood the blogosphere, it seems, at least with notable sites. I know of the Texas A&M And Baseball, In No Particular Order blog, but no other notable ones. That is one of the reasons I agreed to do a blog for SBN.

I have to ask,
Whats with the Pot banger, and other stupid terms i hear on the other aggie forum.

"potbanger" or pot banger
I can only address that term, b/c I don’t know of the others you are referring to. You’ll have to list them.
A potbanger is someone who is calling for the head coach to be fired. Since fans in general are an optimistic bunch, and Aggie fans tend to be very overly optimistic about their leaders (see Fran getting 5 years), one who calls for the head coach to be fired is often not looked on favorably, so they call them “potbangers”.
It actually isn’t a perjorative term, b/c many people will threaten “to get out their pots” if we lose to a certain team, etc.
When a fanbase becomes divided over a coach, it isn’t unusual for the two sides to label themselves. I recall the Mackovic years at texas, and supporters were called “Mack Huggers” and detractors were called “Mack Realists”. I can still remember people asking for the “Huggers to come out and take their medicine” after the 1997 UCLA game.
I was called a potbanger about midway through the 2003 season, when I pointed out that Fran wasn’t who we thought he was, and we were going to be disappointed by him.

this should be a weekly thing...
..where Beergut addresses the terms that are supposedly negative (ie t-sip)
It could be very enlightening.

call us T.U.
As I tell a younger cousin, who is currently a student at A&M, call us T.U. We are The University.
