'Gotta love those sooners...

OU makes our conference look so good with all their great sportsmanship. I don't know about any of you, but I'm nominating DeMarcus Granger for Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year award. I'll go right ahead and email the conference headquarters right now and get that process under way. Anyone with me?

OU started the Washington game by planting themselves right in front of WU's entrance, jumping up and down, keeping the team from entering the field. I'm sure that was just a misunderstanding. The announcers had it all wrong. OU wasn't starting anything, they were just excited about their first road game.

And then this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtXBIRVmEnk

Meh...

I look at it this way…

When I was a DT (in high school…yeah, I know not the same thing, but still…) you’re trained to explode on ANY movement off the line of scrimmage. Period.

If you didn’t? You were running gassers for the last twenty mins of practice.

Yeah, Granger’s a turd. I was also triple-teamed one time when we were playing Killeen…that was one of most gratifying moments of my varsity year.

(god I hope there’s not another me out there that going to twist my “triple-team” comment)

Meh...

I’m sure your coach didn’t let your team block the other from entering the field or pull some of the other crap they are known for. There is a difference. Football is a tough, competitive sport and if you can’t take it don’t play the game. But some of the stuff OU pulls is just bad behavior. It gives Oklahoma University and the conference a bad name.

Wimps

No team would’ve prevented us from taking the field. A real team would’ve charged through them. Hell, it’s their home field!! Can you imagine if A&M was preventing us from leaving the Neuhaus tunnel??

Wimps. I hate OU, don’t get me wrong, but it was obvious in every facet of the game that the Sooners were there to beat up Willingham’s team.

It doesn’t give the conference a bad name. OU is a force to be reckoned with. They intimidate and they walk the talk. I like this kind of bravado. This is division one football, my friend, not intramurals.

Intimidation is part of their persona and their attack

and quite often it covers some of their flaws, at least while they’re standing up. Not so good on the ground.

Yup. Absolutely...

If you watch the boardcast of the game where Granger knocks over the guard, he immediately walks away from the action and doesn’t make a scene until after the rest of the Wash squad starts to retaliate.

Just goes to show that Wash’s offensive line wasn’t prepared to take a hit until after the ball was snapped.

ALWAYS be prepared BEFORE leaving the huddle.

hey

don’t call my huskies wimps. just cause they didn’t start a brawl doesn’t make them wimps.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

No...

Not to belabor the point, but I maintain that the Huskies acted like Poodles when the Sooners were blocking their entrance to THEIR OWN FIELD!

I must disagree to an extent

I happen to buy into the whole NCAA sportsmanship idea (I know, I know) and this goes over the line. Maybe if a team I didn’t despise with every fiber of my being commit this act I could look past it, but when the land thieves pull this crap it beings up images of Big Red Sports, Switzer and just general Boz low class cheating.

You would never see Army or Navy pulling this junk and I hope we never do anything like this either. This is the shenanigans that separate the Army’s of the world from the Miami’s and it defiantly distinguishes the sooners from us.

You are also taught to stop on the whistle

No one else on the line came even close to barrelling at their man, hell his dude wasnt even on the line, was almost a full yard back. The whistle blew before he moved, and he took almost 2 full steps. He wanted to blow him up and thought he could get away with it. He knew exactly what had happened and thought False Start = Free hit. Dont kid yourself that it was anything else.

It was a penalty and a dirty play.

On the following play, even if he was “punched” like they say, wasnt it his leg that was hurt? Was he dead legged as well?

Oh and one more thing...

Again, I freeking hate OU. I could go through a litany of ways I hate OU. That said, there’s never been a single season where I as a Horns fan haven’t completely respected their capabilities.

OU, for lack of a better word, is good for football. They make the BIG12 look tough. UT makes the BIG12 look shiny. I miss the days when UT and OU was a game between black hats – too bad we wear the white hat, now.

I think this is one of the best and most accurate statements I have ever read. I also think it’s a glaring issue that I would love see addressed by our next coaching staff, when the current regime is put out to pasture.

While we don’t always get along, where would the Big 12 have been over the last 10 years without Oklahoma and Texas?

tough vs. shiny

I never said I don’t expect UT to be mentally and physically tough competitors on the field. We should demand it. And I agree there isn’t enough in the current program.

But there is a huge difference between tough and dirty.

by austin57 on Sep 16, 2008 9:56 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And all I'm saying is

Darth Vader (Anakin Skywalker) is featured in all 6 Star Wars movies whereas Luke is only in 4 of them (albeit briefly in Episode 3).

Point is this:
Football NC: OU has 7, UT has 4.
Baseball NC: OU has 2, UT has 6.

Football is checkers, and baseball is chess.
Football is beef, and baseball is chicken.

Wouldn’t you rather us play each minute of each game like our defense did in the 1st half of the 2005 NC game? We knew USC was going to score their points – everyone knew it. But, oh man…how sweet did you feel when you saw Leinart walking to the sideline with his eyes rolling back into his head? That was a dirty hit. We needed to do that because we needed to make them respect us. It has nothing to do with fear, per se. It’s a means to an end, and in football it gives you an edge over the rest of the top-10 worthy competition. It ain’t right, but it’s right.

But oh man…I’m getting goosebumps right now thinking about that hit (hit is at about the 3:15 mark)!

I disagree

That wasn’t a dirty hit. Ross went in with his shoulder.

There is a difference between tough and dirty. And counting total national titles doesn’t further your point that we should be dirty like OU. They’ve beaten us when they were better, not because they were more dirty. Besides, if we’re talking current regimes (Stoops and Mack), both have exactly one BCS title.

And Obi-Wan is also in all six movies… as well as R2-D2 and C3PO. Your point?

Perhaps the Huskies could have acted to get the Sooners out of their way, but starting a brawl or anything stupid like that wouldn’t make them tough in my book. It would just make them childish idiots. Great way to teach college students to be rational, thinking young men, huh.

by TheElusiveShadow on Sep 16, 2008 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

It's Your Right

…but you must now join the ranks of the others who have missed the main idea.

Ross’ hit wasn’t dirty, true…but it also wasn’t necessary. Why’d he do it do you think? Why’d he go low and hit Leinart when he was already down on the turf? Forward progress had been halted. There was no loose ball, no struggle. The play was dead.

Why do you think Aaron Ross, Thorpe Award winner, All-American, first round draft pick, and Super Bowl champion – why do you think Ross hit Leinart when he was down? Did Matty call him names? Or make fun of his mama? Or talk shit about his girlfriend? I doubt it. So…why did Ross do what he did in that game?

Because in the heat of the moment, in the middle of the limelight, among the other competitors dancing on the surface tension of the ether called adrenaline Aaron Ross’ instinctual side wanted to destroy Leinart. And I guarantee when it happened you had that guilty wry smiling grimace that we all do when we see a big hit. We all go “ooooooooooh, man!” and then we chuckle and anxiously await the replay to watch it again and again and again.

It ain’t dirty. It’s football.

ou ain’t dirty – there are one or two dumb players that do boneheaded things, but they ain’t dirty. They compete, and they look for kids that have that ineffable quality that lets them skate on the edge of nasty while collected accolade after accolade.

But once in awhile, a Bosworth comes along. And now that Bosworth apparently has been re-christened Granger (though I would never saddle Granger with the idiocy of Boz – I hate the muthaf****r). Granger was anxious and ready to hit some one. Yes, we’re all taught to pull-up at the whistle, but we’re animals and sometimes our base instinct is to fight, to hurt, to draw first blood.

And THAT’S the kind of player we need! Derrick Johnson, Tommy Nobis, Leonard Davis, Dan Neil, and yes…Aaron Ross among the select group of UT Longhorns that helped harden and even pit the chrome of our shiny Cadillac.

My last two points: You should never EVER let anyone walk over you. You will never live it down. You must be wary of the situation, its implications and its consequences, but you must always protect you and yours from humiliation. Your response must always be measured, however. If someone is blocking you from the field, push through them and take the field. The Huskies backed down, period. That’s the beginning of the end for Willingham. They are now 0-3, and played like it.

2nd point: There is no such thing as a “rational, thinking” young man.

different take

I have a younger relative that plays football for a D-1 team (not UT). We were watching a game and the subject of tough vs. dirty play came up. He said that you always have to stay alert and play tough but dirty is different. When you start playing dirty it can take you out of the game mentally. At that point you are focusing on how to get back at, take a shot at, etc. and your head isn’t 110% in the play at the moment. Dangerous. You hurt your teammates by not being able to make the play or get where they need you to be. If you are playing dirty, you then lose your edge because everyone may be gunning for you and then you are unable to do what you are supposed to do.

I think Granger may have proved his point.
