Garrett Gilbert - National TV Tonight
For those that haven't heard, Lake Travis plays Austin Westlake tonight at Westlake. The game will be televised on FSN at 7 pm. If you're in Austin and want a good look at the future of the Longhorns, there should still be tickets available. We got three yesterday on the 50 and there were plenty left. Tickets run for $7. Give Westlake a call and they'll point you in the right direction to get tickets.
I'll post my comments later tonight, but hopefully this thread will provide a place for others that are more football savvy than myself to provide their own analysis. From everything I've heard, this kid is spectacular.

Should be great
Westlake lost last week to Cedar Park, so I don’t imagine them being too keen on losing two in a row, since that hasn’t happened since I went there. I would expect Garrett Gilbert having to play out of his mind tonight to win at Westlake.

Westlake not what it used to be.
I went to the Westlake – Bowie game last year and discovered that Westlake hasn’t been its old self of late. It was Bowie’s first win at Westlake in well over ten years. Regardless, you’re right that Gilbert will have to play well to pull this one off against a humbled and hungry Westlake team. I plan on going and hope to see something special from Gilbert.

They began to decline
After Coach Schroeder left in 2003 when his son, Chad, graduated and went on to play at A&M. It’s big shoes for Coach Long to fill, but it certainly isn’t all bad since they did make it to the title game two years ago.
Thinking of title games….Schroeder’s last one was in 2000 against Midland Lee and non other than Cedric Benson. I remember Benson running all over the defense with the exception of the safety, Huston Street.

Not the case good sir,
The last title game was in the 01-02 season, when they played against Reggie McNeal and lost to Lufkin. Fun fact, Westlake beat Vince Young and Houston Madison on the way to that state championship game.

Lake Travis 14, Westlake 10 8:56 in 2nd qtr.
Gilbert can drill the ball. And he has run well, too.
Brit Hager’s son is a strong running hoss for Westlake.

Lake Travis 24, Westlake 10 at halftime
Down 14-10 Westlake was running roughshod over LT but penalties and then a turnover. Lake Travis then drove 95 yards to expand the lead to 21-10 as time was running out in the second quarter. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff, a pooch kick, gave LT another opportunity and they kicked a FG to make it 24-10.
The yardage is close: Lake Travis has 276 yards, with Gilbert passing for 173. Westlake has 240 total yards, with 138 via the run and 82 passing. Ryan Swope has run great for Westlake but got dinged a bit late in the half.
Lake Travis gets the ball to start the second half.

GG
I knew he could throw the ball, but he runs really well also! He is already as big as Colt, except a little taller! Lake Travis runs an offense similar to Texas. He will play right away.

Forget russel shephard, this guys the real deal. He can pass, and run. He has a nice smooth stride, like a horse. Hes very composed and confident in the pocket

Pass Completion seemed a bit low...
…but most of it was throwing it away (to save sacks and lost yardage) and I saw at least 3 easily catchable balls that were dropped.
Also, one spectacular throw from the back of the endzone to complete a 3rd and long. Generally great play all around from Gilbert.

What I wrote up on this game in another thread:
…anyone watching Westlake vs. Lake Travis? It’s on FSN right now, and Lake Travis came just shy of taking a 28-10 lead right before the half. As it is, it’s 24-10, and Gilbert’s looking fairly strong. I kind of feel like he should’ve been able to take it in for a touchdown before the half, but his passing has been pretty good, and other than a questionable non-grounding call, I think the kid has looked solid. I haven’t seen him play until now, and I’m encouraged that he’s going to be a ‘Horn. He’s definitely mobile enough, yet he’s a more accomplished passer than VY was coming out of HS.
Good to see that others thought he performed pretty well. I understand he’ll have that learning curve and all, but I think he’ll be comfortable with the UT environment after living in the area already, and I’m hopeful that he’ll redshirt for Colt’s senior year, get quality snaps as Chiles’ backup in 2010, and have the offense firing on all cylinders as a redshirt sophomore in 2011. The youth on this team is so deep and talented that they should be able to make legitimate title runs in 2011 and 2012.
Anyone know if he’ll be a spring enrollee?

Some Thoughts
Garrett Gilbert is everything I hoped for and more. He seemed quicker/more agile than advertised. I was especially impressed with his pocket presence and the ability to keep his eyes down field when the heat is on. Westlake was running good amount of zone against the pass and Gilbert did a great job of recognizing the zone/placing the ball in the zones holes.
Did anyone else notice WR#4 on Lake Travis, Cade McCrary? I’m not sure he has the kind of talent to play at Texas, but he’s got great hands, size, and body control. Definitely someone to keep an eye on…

Yes.
Yes, McCrary was pretty good. He made a real clutch catch on a 3rd long. Gilbert sent a last second heave to him which was right along the sidelines. The kid was smart enough to keep both feet in before stumbling out of bounds. I thought he was a big whiner also, often yelling and complaining to refs when things didn’t go his way.

Cade McCrary a legacy
Cade’s dad was an assistant coach at Texas for a bit, I’m pretty sure, and stepped down in 2004. Maybe Mack has the inside track if this is his senior year?
