New Blog: Backing the Pack for NC State Fans!

Gamblers Anonymous, Week 2

Advance apologies if this is below the fine men and women of BON, but I'm interested in hearing thoughts from knowledgeable fans on the this weekend's slate of games.  Opportunities abound in the first few weeks of the season as the experts in the desert are still figuring out just who is who.  Here's a few that stick out to me - please chime in with thoughts and let me know if I'm missing a game you like.

This is my gut and incredibly unscientific, so forgive me those of you hard cores out there shaking your head because I'm going against that school that is 9-1 ATS vs. MAC teams in week 2 since 1942 the week before playing a PAC 10 team below 46 degrees latitude.

AUBURN -17.5 over S Miss
OREGON -35.5 over Utah St.
OKLAHOMA -21 over Cincy
OHIO ST. -34.5 over Ohio
WISCONSON -21 over Marshall
Texas Tech -10.5 over NEVADA
GEORGIA -24 over Central Mich.
NOTRE DAME -22 over San Diego St.
ARIZONA -22.5 over Toledo
Texas -26.5 over UTEP
IOWA -26.5 over Florida Intl

I'm also very close to convincing myself to take Miami (+21) over FLORIDA.

My picks

There is no science here, my gut picks:

1) Texas over UTEP. This looks like a gift to me.
2) Ohio over tOSU. Wells is not playing, also I think tOSU will play Pryor 30+ to give him experience. About 75+ of the bets is on tOSU though.
3) San Diego St. over ND
4) Miami over Florida

We’ll see.

No Beanie, No Problem

There seems to be conflicting reports on Beanie’s playing status, but I’m not worrying about it regardless. Ohio managed 39 yards rushing last week vs Wyoming. I think OSU’s monster of a D helps keep Ohio’s running game in check, and the offense salts this one away quickly. Even if they stay very vanilla to give USC no advanced scouting, their superior athletes on offense dominate.

I am no fan of the golden domers and even less of a fan of their blowhard coach, but SDSU might be the worst team in college football this year. There’s a lot to prove in South Bend this year, and I think they start with a woodshed performance.

I'm wary of a 35.5 line for a team like Oregon

I know nothing about Utah State, but doesn’t that seem a bit high for Oregon? Definitely take Tech. That line is way too low just because they had a weak first game. And I don’t know what to think about that Miami/UF game. Miami’s not great, but 21 points? Seems a bit high.

That's a lot of chalk...

I think the C MIchigan game will be closer than people think. Dan LeFour may be able to keep it closer than three touchdowns.

I wouldn’t take Notre Dame to cover more than three TDs against anybody. Similarly, I think it is asking a lot of Arizona’s offense to cover 22.5.

Question...

Did you see their game last week? I know it was just Idaho, but still; Tuitama and Grigsby were very impressive.

Agg

aTm is currently giving 3/3.5 to New Mexico. I mean, Aggy is bad this year, but their recruiting has been decent over the last four years, and I feel like they should at least be in the middle of the 1A pack. NM put up three points last week against TCU, and they don’t have the talent to do much better.

Come on. I don’t care if Aggy can only put up one score, a 7-3 win takes the spread here.

My biggest position will be on the Agg this weekend…. I also effectively hedge my bets there, because I win money when they win, and if they lose, even though I lose some scratch, I get the joy of them losing to some junk team, again.

I am certainly no visionary but my two cents

Oregon beat Washington by 31 points and the Huskies – bad as they are – are definitely more of a threat than Utah State. Keep in mind also that Oregon’s starting QB went down with a concussion early, and they continued to pile on the points with a third-string JC transfer.

Much as I hate to say it, I think ND is a strong pick, given that they will almost certainly be vastly improved over last year, and San Diego State just lost to Cal Poly last weekend, the only FBS team to lose to an FCS opponent (not even a particular good one, either).

Florida will destroy Miami – the U just doesn’t have the tools to keep up with an offense that put up 56 points against Hawaii and only gave up 10, without the help of two of their biggest playmakers (Percy Harvin and Brandon Spikes), both of whom are back this week. It would be nice if this weekend’s “feature matchup” actually turned into a close game, but I see this one staying close only until the 2nd quarter, and then get out of hand fast once Urban Meyer’s offense starts clicking.

I agree with billyzane on TTech – the line does seem a little low, and I’m sure they will come out stronger than last week, but a couple of things might be a factor here: 1) Nevada has some firepower, and a great duel-threat playmaker as a QB. 2) It’s an away game for Tech. Still, even if this will be a track meet I expect Tech to cover this one.

Finally, A&M will almost certainly beat the spread against NM. This definitely falls in the “win-win” category for me – there is little chance that A&M will win and not cover given the tight spread, and therefore even if I lose the $$$ I’m likely to be happy about the outcome.

here’s an article that seems to agree with my hunch on Oregon.

It's time for an Auburn letdown

It seems to me like Auburn always has an early season game they lose at home or play way too close for comfort, and I think it’s the SoMiss game this year. Auburn has no semblance of an offensive identity, and SoMiss has a new (decently talented) head coach in Larry Fedora who knows how to rack up yards.

This just smells like one of those games that ends up 23-19 or something like that.

A little game of chance

I went 3/4 last week, my picks for this week:
Correctly picked Vandy to cover the spread last night.
Oklahoma -21.5
Houston +15.5
Miami/Florida Over 50.5
New Mexico +115
Texas -26.5
