Postgame Reac...

On second thought, I'm saving my thoughts for tomorrow. I've got a watch party to clean up after, I'm exhausted, and I need a little time to process this... odd... game.

For now, I'll happily take the comfortable win and look forward to seeing many of you at DKR next Saturday.

Hook 'em.

Good experience.

UTEP has an interesting offense. They exploit the open areas extremely well, with plenty of good hot routes.

This was great for this young D to experience.

Opponent

Plus, going against an opponent that had the game circled for years should help the team get ready for Arkansas.

Yes, the Hogs will bring the emotion

and have their own bag of tricks. Good point. Very similar.

In one sense, all those mistakes the DBs and Muschamp will serve to make them all better.

We should realize that for the defensive equation, communication is one of the key learning curves on both sides. From the press box to the sideline and sending the final decision to the players, the whole process has had two games experience. This is not as difficult as a completely new coaching staff, but it still is one of those adaptations going on in the background.

I thought there was a little brother-in-lawing between the coaches; UTEP will get a little recruiting help from this game. Mack wasn’t out to beat them into oblivion.

Last, this game reminded me a lot of the Washington State bowl game when they took VY out. Basically then all they had to do was run straight at them – and we never did, kept trying to pass and make the original game plan work. No adaptation. Tonight the Horns adapted better, and, I suspect, could have adapted more but they wanted to run what they wanted to run for practice. GD had to pull out one of his “trick” plays – the pass to Shipley – which was merely a take-off on one of the Horns bread-and-butter plays.

I would have preferred to save that for OU. Oh well. Hopefully GD has more variations. And the play was obviously practiced a great deal and executed perfectly, which is what GD said he wants in terms of his trick plays (via last week’s interviews).

Since we love us some WR screens ...

… we should do that pump fake, blocker breaks straight to the end zone at least once a game. It will make those screens much more effective if the DBs have to stay honest.

Solid Game

We played pretty well. I thought we were pretty slow in the 3rd down, but overall it was a solid performance. Colt played an above average game except for the third quarter. I would give him a A-, B+ game. Fozzy really impressed tonight and he could be making a case for the number one job.

I thought defensively we had a good game. We held them to 13 points and pitched a second half shutout. The one complaint so far is that we are not really forcing enough turnovers. Against better opponents we need to create some more turnovers. Some of you guys are expecting Muschamp to turn this defense into the ’85 Bears instantly. I, personally, have already seen the improvement right away. Last year we would have given up 20+ to this team and been in a dog fight. The defense may not be creating havock but its shutting down offenses and not giving up the big plays.

By the time the OU game rolls around I think this defense will be really good.

Side notes: I don’t know but it seems like we only have about 20 plays in our playbook, maybe it is because we only run about three or four formations, but our offense since VY has seemed really simple. Maybe it is because I liked alot of the pro-style offense that we ran with Simms and Co. a couple of years ago.

Solid victory on the road.

Scaled-down playbook

The announcers addressed this briefly last night. According to GD, Colt’s “sophomore slump” could be in part attributed to asking him to do too much. They had turned him into a “coach on the field”, running no-huddle almost constantly and expecting him to get the line into line. At the same time, they had significantly expanded the playbook from the year before.

To get Colt back on track, they’ve scaled back the playbook and are expecting less from him in the coaching category. Seems to be working. I hope they can slowly add back some plays as the offense progresses this season.

Watch out, I bite.

by EddieTheAlbinoSquirrel on Sep 7, 2008 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point, Eddie.

The difficulty of coaching on the field is authority. At some point if you’re that gungho, you have to call people out and note their mistakes – yet the QB has no real authority to punish as coaches’ do. That “coach on the field” aspect seems to work better on defense, which has a different range of interactivity and an overlapping of responsibility.

That said, I think they’ll add to the playbook as necessary because this year those won’t be brand new or untested. Mack has always emphasized execution of a set of plays rather than a vast playbook but I do want him to set GD free, for better or worse.

all i know

is that the fake wr screen to quan that colt lobbed to shipley in the end zone was the most beautiful damn thing i’ve seen in a long time from a texas offense. Bob Davie made a good comment about it, saying utep bought it and even has the receipt to prove it.

Solid win

But Texas could have played better

3 Things i saw tonight

1. Our secondary needs to improve a lot if we want to hang with the likes of Tech and Mizzou. Along with that, I don’t know if it is coaching adjustments but as the night went on it got harder for them to move the ball, that’s something that we haven’t seen as much in the Last couple years is second half adjustments.

2. Our young receivers need to step up, you may be able to hit Cosby half the Time against UTEP but against a better they will adjust and actually cover him. Saying that, Cosby was a stud tonight, I just think it will help the offense out a lot if he isn’t the only one opposing defenses had to worry about.

3. Fozzy looked really good. Mcgee was a little off. Chris O. was great in the passing game. A good group of running backs, if you put all there strengths together you have one amazing back. I would still like to see more I-formations with Mcgee.

Not if Graham Harrell plays like he did against Nevada.

I wouldn’t say he was off, he did throw for 395 yds and 5 tds. Sure, there were two interceptions, but didn’t Cinci intercept more balls than any other team last year?

OU is scary this year. Not saying I was overly disappointed about last night, but if we don’t improve fast we will not be able to hang with those guys.

Good win

But not great… we let’em hang around too long. But this game was a definite improvement over last year. Additionally, this game was not against a Sunbelt conf. team, this was a C-USA team, and so I count the Miner’s as a cut above FAU in talent and the coaching is probably better too. Overall, a solid win. Nice to see a couple of sacks.

Best action on defense tonight: Muck’s INT and Kindle blowing through the LOS and knocking a much larger OLineman on his butt fives yards back while pursuing the QB. That was beautiful.

of seeing our defense get worked. another 250+ plus pass game for our opponent…
They really targeted Thomas in the first half. Anyone else still disappointed with the pass d???

Good Win

To me it seems as if our def. is sloppy the first half then comes to play the 2nd both games neither team scored in the 2nd half now these teams are not OU, Tech or Mizzou but I beileve that if we play def. the whole game like we have played in the second half of both of these we shouldnt have a thing to worry about. We still have 3 games before OU long as we keep improving as we have been we will have a hell of a def. come years end

thoughts while still 'serfectly pober'

Solid win, but not spectacular. I partially attribute it to the late start time + the Sun “Super” Bowl atmosphere. On to the performance:

- Looks like the same two problems that cropped up the first week: run O and pass D. Fozzy looked good out there, but I thought GD abandoned the run way too much in this game. He had the two drives which were all run (one of which resulted in a TD, the other stalled after McGee didn’t hit his hole fast enough). Based on what I saw tonight, I’l be surprised if Fozzy isn’t starting by the end of the year.
- The pass D had its growing pains again. I don’t think Earl Thomas had his best game. Gideon still has his nose from the ball, though I didn’t see much from him in pass coverage. Not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing.
- The line play is still bothering me a little. There’s a lot of penetration, but not a lot of finishing. That’s fine when you’re playing FAU or UTEP, but it’ll be more troublesome when you get to the OU’s and MIzzou’s of the world. There’s still too many plays when our line is close, but the QB still gets it off for a sizeable gain.
- Those two factors lead to a less than stellar run defense. They didn’t give up a lot of big gains (strong linebacker play), but there were too many solid 5 yard pickups by UTEP in my opinion.
- Defensive helmet stickers: In my opinion, Orakpo, Miller and Kindle had the biggest impacts.
- Funny how Colt had quite a few bad throws, but still had an amazing stat line. That’s a player right there. Not sure why anyone is calling for Chiles at this point. Speaking of Chiles, the Q package disappointed me. Gotta try to get it in his hands.
- Curious playcalling with McGee. Looks like Fozzy is much better at running the zone read than McGee. Not sure why you don’t just let McGee take it straight into the heart of the defense rather than dance around the tackles.
- It looked like the line had problems with the speed of the 3-3-5. Colt definitely felt more pressure this week than last. I did like how on his scrambles, he was looking more to throw than to pass (unlike last week). Nice to actually see a RB lead the team in rushing yards.
- Quan Cosby, showing some breakaway speed this game. Nicely done. Buckner got abused on Colt’s INT. That’s a freshman mistake right there.
- And lastly, John Gold looks like some punter.

Only seven more days til the next one. Hook ’em!

by jc25 on Sep 7, 2008 2:50 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You saw what I saw...

- Fozzy definitely outperformed McGee, but I think you’re right when you say the zone read is more Fozzy’s cup of tea than Vondrell’s.

- Yes, much more pressure on Colt, but with an extremely high blitz % by UTEP. Colt did an excellent job of finding his hot receiver (usually Quan or Shipley) which leads me to…

- Far and away the best game I’ve ever seen Quan play. He showed off his speed, leaping ability, sticky hands, and ran beautifully crisp routes. He was simply awesome.

Eh, I thought the game was good

I would have liked to see more of Fozzy. Note to GD: when a RB is hot, you don’t take him out after a run of 17 yards. He wasn’t tired dip shit.

And thanks GD, for playing Chiles with the 2nd and 3rd team offense again. It makes him look GREAT!

Why don't...

we play a few of the receivers in the first team, that way they look better? Reason for players playing on the second team is that in practice, they have not earned their spot as the main quarterback, receiver, or whatever position you want to talk about. I don’t think putting Chiles in with the first teamers to show what he can do is going to be better than pulling a pretty on fire Colt McCoy.

I got the feeling they were saving him and the Q Package

for later, perhaps some for Arkansas, maybe for CU and OU. Otherwise they just wanted him to operate the offense, which really is his primary responsibility as #2 QB. Being able to control his emotion and his ambition and focus on his #1 job is part of that role.

I think I may have Muschamp figured out!

Last night while watching the Miam/Florida game and then watching the Horns game I kind of thought about something. I do not believe Muschamp has even dipped into his bag on defense. I believe we will see that come Colorado. With Texas’ young secondary he is trying to keep it simple, there were some blitzes last night, but not really a whole lot. With just 4 down lineman rushing Texas was able to get good pressure. I give Vittatoe a lot of credit. I played against his high school and I know the system. Nothing, but option, so the guy knows how to run and scramble. He was running for his life a lot last night and made some good throws on the run. I believe Muschamp does not want to let the hounds loose, and show the rest of the Big 12 what he is up to. Miami last night with an even younger D had all-world cry baby ( I still hate Tebow to this day, still think he is completely overrated and still thinks he does not deserve a heisman trophy) acting like his true self. One thing as Longhorn fans we are going to have to accept, qb’s in the Big 12 are going to get their yards. That is a fact, but what I see out of this D is that they do an amazing job of keeping the opposing team out of the end zone, whether it is with a turnover or just buckling down and holding a field goal. I read someone’s post earlier that if this was last years game, Texas D gives up 25 pts. That is probably true. But even though the D gave up some yards in the air and on the ground. I did not know UTEP had that good of a rb, they still held a good prolific offense to 13 pts. Vittatoe passed for over 3,000 yds last year as a freshmen, and we know what FAU’s Rusty Smith did last year. So even though I know we want the passing yards to decrease. Let’s just accept it that with the great qb’s in our conference that yards are gong to be thrown. What we need to be happy about right now is that right now the offense is averaging roughly 47 pts a game and the defense is holding opposing offense’s to around 11 pts. I honestly believe in 3 weeks in Boulder, that this defense is going to be bringing some major heat.

hmmmm
I give Vittatoe a lot of credit. I played against his high school and I know the system. Nothing, but option, so the guy knows how to run and scramble.

If you played against Vittatoe in HS, you should be aware that Trinity actually is a power-running team with very little option in their offense. His senior year, they ran a almost exclusively straight I, and play-action. Vittatoe was actually fairly adept at passing the ball, even though most of it was off of play-action, so his success as a passer at the college level is not a surprise.

Miami last night with an even younger D had all-world cry baby ( I still hate Tebow to this day, still think he is completely overrated and still thinks he does not deserve a heisman trophy) acting like his true self.

Well, if your previous comment about Vittatoe didn’t make me wonder if I should take your opinion seriously, this comment removed all doubt. Tebow is an overrated crybaby? What, exactly, do you base that on?

Seriously?

Previous comments….
1. We let them hang around too long – True, when we went up 28-6, it should have been over. But then our offense became inept for a while, 2 or 3 strait punts, and they marched down the field in an uplifting drive for their team and fans and scored a touchdown to make it 28-13 just before the half. We can’t let a good team do that.

2. Our defense played pretty good – I don’t know what to think about that. Check out the box score.

1st Downs 23
3rd down efficiency 7-17
4th down efficiency 0-1
Total Yards 412
Passing 267
Comp-Att 25-46
Yards per pass 5.8
Rushing 145
Rushing Attempts 31
Yards per rush 4.7
Penalties 11-97
Turnovers 1
Fumbles lost 1
Interceptions thrown 0
Possession 36:41

They out gained us in total yards (over 400!!!), killed us in time of poss (mostly because of some quick strikes that I am pretty proud of vs. their grind it out run game and dink and dunk passes), but we only caused 1 turnover…. this is UTEP?

3. And a comment that no one has made (and I am not sure needs to be) but it bothered me so I will. From middle 2nd quarter thru late 3rd, we were not very good. Colt threw a pick, they marched up and down the field. I was throwing my hands up in the air.

I went to sleep b/c I had to be up early today with my daughter, but I wish I had gotten to see the 4th quarter. Maybe I would feel better if I had gotten to see us pull away in a second half shutout……. But this game made me as nervous as a 42-13 game could.

I agree with you SwimTexas

The mos frustrating part of the game was UTEP’s touchdown ending half, and the third quarter. This is where I was yelling for Davis’ head. I believe the defense was our saving grace in the 3rd quarter. I just thought in the 3rd the offense got lazy and just kept calling the same play over and over and over again. Davis has got stop calling the same run play 25-30 times a game. That stupid draw read play, I hate and am beyond sick of seeing it called numerous times. It almost seemed as if Davis was happy being up 28-13 and wanted to run the clock out. I am not a fan of pouring it on teams, but everyone knows that a 15 pt lead is not exactly comfortable. If the O had come out and scored two quick td’s then they could have coasted the rest of the way. i honestly believe they put on the brakes to early.

Hard To Feel Good About It Looking Ahead

A win is a win. I’ll take it.

However….

I think that when you see your team struggle with a team that couldn’t hang with BUFFALO the week before, there is cause for concern.

THE POSITIVES:

*Lots of pressure with simply four rushing D-linemen. I love the defensive line and Brian Orakpo is going to be our best player on that unit

*Sergio Kindle. He looked like a smarter player out there. Still not what he was billed to be but better than before

*The Colt. I’m still miffed that he threw the interception but he looks more like “Freshman Colt” than “Sophomore Colt”. He managed the game very well. His cadence gained us some offsides penalties. Most of his throws were well-timed and well-thrown. He is one hell of a scrambler.

*Foswhitt! Oh my. I really did like to see how effective this kid was especially late in the game. I especially liked his ability to keep from getting ankle tackled (a JC specialty).

*OL- This group could have throttled the opponent and taken over the game if Greg Davis wouldn’t have abandoned the run so early in the second half. Hell, if Mark Jones and Greg Davie can point that out…then it MUST be true.

*Tackling. I thought that the tackling looked much better than last year. Granted, a lot of it was downfield but still…I thought they wrapped up better and I thought that the recovery and tackle on the reverse was exceptional.

THE NEGATIVES:

*Third Quarter Colt- Did anyone else notice that Colt turned into sophomore Colt when he tried to do too much? Colt started pressing. He started to get that look of frustration. At times, the momentum turns against the Horns and when he tries to take it all on his shoulders…no good.

*Vondrell McGee- I was disappointed with his ineffectiveness. Still a powerful back whom I trust not to fumble but he really didn’t beat anyone to the corner on that sweep play and that’s bothersome. He looks a little slower. I hope that I’m wrong.

*LBs- When I saw that roughing the passer penalty against us, I wondered “Is Killebrew still playing?”. While the front four was giving them fits, the LBs still looked as though none of them wanted to dominate.

*Pass Defense/DBs- Y’all knew it was coming. We have the unfortunate problem of having a weak secondary in a conference that is not only “pass happy” but “pass insane”. You could say that the receivers were open because of play design and hot routes but let’s be honest…they were OPEN. Far too many guys open too far downfield. I can cut a break to our bevy of freshman safeties but the corners are mostly guys that have played. As an aside, how the hell did we wind up with only freshmen safeties? Isn’t that called “planning” Mack?

I thought that defensive pass interference against (?Ch. Brown) us in the first half was bogus.

Were we at a considerable height disadvantage last night? Beasley didn’t seem to be that far out of position…he just looked too short. Did anyone have a comment on Ryan Palmer? He came close to that pick. Did anyone else notice him for better or worse? He’s a guy that needs to step up and improve this year. I thought that E. Acho had a nice play in run support late…but I don’t think that he got in until garbage time.

you're not wrong, but

I think it should be kept in perspective. As others have pointed out, last year this could have easily turned into a shootout, and this year the final score was lopsided as it was supposed to be. Other thoughts:

1) Sure, UTEP got trounced by Buffalo, but that game was a 2,000 mile road trip, on the first game of the year using a new, high-risk high-reward defense. As a result, they played like utter crap and got burned on big play after big play.

2) Conversely, last night they were at home, in the game of their lives, with the crowd of the century (by El Paso standards, anyway), backing them up. They played much better in their system, and Vittatoe worked great under pressure (yes, there was pressure). Their offensive and defensive lines were much more aggressive than FAU’s, and they executed quite well for the most part. Every time they made dumbass mistakes (attempting an NCAA-record-tying field goal and not paying attention to the return???) we capitalized. Most importantly, though, they DID NOT GIVE UP at any point in that game, which is much more than we could say about FAU.

3) Our guys were coming off a big win in a flawless opener, and were facing an opened that looked much worse on paper than the one they had routed. Road game, late start time, etc…

If this kind of scenario doesn’t have “trap game” written on it, I’m not quite sure what would. Sure, I’m disappointed that they outgained us and possessed the ball for like 15minutes longer than we did. But I think this is actually a good outcome, since it will allow the coaches to take the air out of the players’ balloons about how great they are.

Defensively, I agree with others above that Muschamp is holding back – I mean the guy would be a complete idiot to show off his tricks against teams like UTEP, especially when even NOT doing so we shut them out in the second half. I would say the same about Greg Davis and the offense, but at this point I’m just not sure anymore…

Did we play well enough last night to beat Mizzou or OU? Absolutely not. But there is time, and the next couple of games should allow for a great deal more tuning up – Arkansas has now had to come back in the 4th quarter twice against a I-AA team and what should be a I-AA team, respectively, and Rice, well, they’re Rice.

some more positives to think about

quan “stop calling me crosby” cosby was unstopable tonight. he came to work and did everything for us including returning the 100 yard field goal attempt. i was for sure that he was going to the house on that. so now we just need a third reciever to step up.

the young WR looked pretty promising. buckner got his TD, collins showed some moves on his touches. we need to start hitting them on the slants and quick strikes to get these kids some YAC. buckner got introduced to college db punch and couldnt get separation from it causing a turnover but i can live with that. hey where is DJ grant?

muckelroy is a special player. he was everywhere tonight. he stood out more to me than kindle and norton. excelent tackler and a ballhawk he is going to score at least 5 more TDs this year and now we have it in writing.

will muschamp is fun to watch and love the fact that he is at Texas. man he is a crazy sum-bitch. this is our second game where we shut down the other team in the second half and that is after the offensive took a nap in the 3rd quarter. we were only a few missed tackles away from having 5 -6 sacks. didnt know that utep qb had that escapablility but he made orakpo miss a few, but what i am happy with is that our front 4 was getting in the face of the qb. more tip balls and sacks will come soon enough.

Very little...

…..was “solid” about that game.

So, our O-Line is a team strength, huh??

How many mistakes have we seen from that D-backfield?

Without Fozzy, our running game is for shit! Tell me, if you will, how the phluck Mack Brown/Major had Fozzy in the #3 spot?

Tanner, Ulatoski and McGee are more examples of seniority, rather than talent, determining starting roles.

We have better players at every friggin’ position, yet for 3 quarters, they are able to stay within 15 points of our Top-10 squad. Colt’s INT was an invitation to narrow the game. Like at Washington State, Mike Price (on a relative basis) was pantsing Mack Brown. That was a very disappointing night of football.

Sorry to say

I must agree. All my little worries are blossoming into real concerns. We have a serious problem in the defensive backfield and are not getting enough pressure from the front line to bail them out. 95% of the time all the QB has to do is roll out to avoid our rush. McCoy has been great and Cosby has come into his own, but the rest of the passing game is AWOL. Pass protection has been much better, though. Until Fozzie came in, we had no running game to speak of. These shotgun sets are just not working. Brightest side, besides McCoy, was the performance of the special teams. Whoever thought to put Cos back to return the FG deserves a promotion.

I get nervous when Colt hones in on one receiver like he did with Cosby. On replays, there were bigger plays to be had if he looked elsewhere. I hate to say it but Colt CANNOT handle pressure. He turns into Eric Valentine from “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry”…

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs -- ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."

Just my opinion!

Random observations:

-Colt for the most part looked really good.
-Quan and Jordan are gamers and ready to go.
-Fozzy stood out. He just looks quicker than the other RBs.
-Irby reminds me of David Thomas.
-OL looked OK, Utep’s defense presented some unique problems.
-At times GD play calling was suprisingly good (when he calls what will work against the defense rather than what he wants to work)and then sometimes just like old times.
-DBs not so good. Its suprising how open recievers can be. I’m not sure our DB coach is up to our standards.
- I hope Muschamp is holding back because DBs are going ot need alot of help.
-At times UTEP moved the ball too well against a top ten team.
-Overall off. looked better than def.
Just my opinions !!!!!!

texas up to #8

in both polls, thanks to the crashing and burning airplane that is West Virginia…sad to see a good program spoiled by a terrible hiring decision. Bill Stewart has his first foot out the door now.

Bad Hire

He seems like a nice guy, but it was a hire based completely on emotion. He had a great bowl game, but if you look at his previous track record he was terrible at middle of nowhere schools. ECU is a great team, but there is no way WVU should only have scored 3 points.

the irony of Bill Stewart's hiring

is that if WVU hadn’t won the Fiesta Bowl, they were close to offering the job to none other than ECU wundercoach Skip Holtz himself. Talk about a pyrrhic victory.

Too much negativity!!

Come on guys with the doom and gloom… What should OSU be saying right now following their shocking performance AT HOME against Ohio U?

It is very early days, and I am as sure as I can be that Muschamp/GD are not showing everything we can do in terms of playcalling. Why would they, when they can get away without it?

The objectives for the first half of the season remain to improve on D (on a game by game basis) and keep the morale/confidence high for the game that really matters against OU. I think that so far so good…

The big positives are Colt and the mere presence of Muschamp on the sidelines. I have a good feeling for this year, a BCS game???

Completely agree.

There seriously is way too much negativity about this win. We went up to El Paso, played late, against opponents “Super Bowl” held them to 13 points and were in complete of the game. Look at Ohio State, barely beat Ohio at HOME. We are improving on defense not turning the ball over on offense (that INT was not Colt’s fault, but in Buckner’s defense Colt should have seen that and thrown the ball behind Buckner and let him come get it. I think we should be 5-0 heading into the Red River Shootout.

some new thoughts

I don’t think Saturday’s performance was notably good or bad . . . workmanlike and inconsistent come to mind. PB is right when he calls it an “odd” game. I doubt Mack will hand out many gold stars when he talks to reporters Monday AM, but Muckelroy was sensational, Fozzy showed some flashes, Colt was excellent at times and more than good enough the rest of the way.

Now, to the not-so-good:

1. Are Henry Melton and Aaron Lewis still on the team? Game stats (they’re UTEP’s, so they may not be accurate) show Lewis pitched a statistical shutout and Melton had one QB hurry and no tackles.

2. Missed tackles. Many, many of them. And tackles that still permitted 1-2 extra yards after the stop was made but not secured.

3. Ground game. You knew UTEP would take McCoy out of the picture after his rushing performance in the opener. Ogb got 1 carry. McGee was not a factor. Too few rushing plays called.

4. Time of possession. It’s easy to blame the defense for not getting the ball back, but co-conspirator there is the offense for not sustaining much, esp. in the third quarter. Last year’s Aggie debacle was 40-20 in possession, UTEP won that one 37-23. Usually, when the QB is sharp and TOP not great, it’s a line issue.

melton was getting plenty of pressure

actually seems to be getting much more than orakpo is. he’s not finishing though, that’s his problem. he always seems to be pushing his defender backwards into the QB and collapsing the pocket, but he’s never actually getting to the QB.

Pressure Defense...???

I really wanted to believe that the new blood on the defensive side of the ball was going to provide a visible difference in the 1st 2 games…. I have not seen it… What I saw last night was a defense that at times looked lost and a pass rush that was out of position and frankly looked like they could not tackle a tackling dummy… Don’t believe me watch a replay of the game and see how the unblocked Orakpo or Thomas can miss a sack with just a head fake… Last time I checked closing your eyes keeps you from being able to see. I watched 10 games yesterday and saw teams that had much less talent than ours get sacks against teams that had mach better players see Ohio State vs Ohio or So. Miss vs. Auburn.

We are on pace with current statistical trends to finish the year with 6 picks and 12 sacks… We were out gained by a team that really was not very good offensively a week ago but I can understand that they played great and we did not in this one.

Granted we gave up only 13 points but it was UTEP… The BIG XII will not be so forgiving if we play this kind of rubberized defense. Amoeba rating +8 for this game… we bent a lot but due to lack of talent, UTEP could not break the bubble.

Arkansas will be a good test for us… They remind me a lot of last years horns. Struggling to find an identity.
