Final Rivals 100 for 2009
Two previous Longhorn 5 stars stayed steady:
Alex Okafor at #14
Garrett Gilbert at #18
An upgrade from 4 star to 5 star:
Mason Walters at #29 overall
Calvin Howell at #55, Garrett Porter at #69, and new Rivals 100 entrant Chris Whaley at #91 round out the Longhorns.
Interesting and satisfying note - Jamarkus McFarland was one of five 5 star prospects to drop to 4 star status in the final ranking.
Whaley is intriguing because of his size. It will be interesting to see how he is used in the offense next year, if any.

And he aint going to get much PT.
McCoy is coming back! But I guess he can gain much knowledge from McCoy. That kid is a stud. I wonder why he’s coming back. He’s a top-10 pick!

he's still the same player.
these rankings can sometimes be political. Considereing the circumstances of his recruitment, this “demotion” looks kind of suspect. But maybe not. Maybe he was overrrated, but Mack and co. thought highly enough of him so who knows.
I thought the same thing....
or maybe it’s just a heck of a coincidence. Suspect or not, he took a slide in the last rankings and now a bigger slide down to a 4 star.
evaluated at the army game
Rivals runs that game and they got a close look at him there and decided to move him down. That’s why Howell moved up quite a bit. I’m a little surprised Timmons didn’t crack the top 100 – by all accounts he was very impressive at practices for the army AA game.
i thought howell got banged up and didn’t play? i dont remember him playing but i also wasn’t looking for him thanks to the injury

Same for Paden Kelley except transposed. Weird.
Garrett Gilbert: 2014 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
I think Okafor is regarded as a high ceiling prospect.
He has potential. Some groups value potential over current production/size. Others vis versa
kelley went to espn's game. Okafor went to rivals game.
It either means that they were impressive while they were evaluated at practices for their games OR these websites want to represent their games as having had the best talent…
Whaley kept reminding more of a former Horn
Finally ye olde memory assisted by a roster search revealed who it was: Winfred Tubbs.
The pride of Fairfield came in big, a 6-4, 238 pound linebacker in 1989. He would redshirt one year, but I don’t remember which. Was a four-year letterman overall.
He was used as a fullback at one time in his early career and had a great run – I want to say against OU or the aggies, but I can’t quite pull it up – but eventually wound up as a big LB in the middle, 6-4, 250 and would make it to the pros with New Orleans and then San Francisco.
Something in the way Whaley ran on the breakaway TD in the Army game reminded me of Tubbs. Anyone else catch that?
Tubbs
should have had a monster Sr season, but unfortunately sliced a tendon in his forearm/hand over the summer. He played the entire 92 season with a huge cast on his arm, which somewhat limited his tackling.
Not that anyone on that Gary Darnell defense could tackle anyhow….
we now have the highest
average recruit rating at 3.95….me likey!
3.84
Kelly and Matthews lost their 4th star. If we get Mims, who just got bumped up to 4 stars we’ll be at 3.85.
if i remember correctly whaley went from about a 90 in the rivals 100, to 103 (out of the rivals 100, but still in the 250) and is back in now.
we’ll see what he does once he gets on campus.
