Early Signing Date in 09?
SI reports, in this article, the AFCA will discuss a December signing date.
Given the overwhelming support for a December signing day from coaches -- 73 percent of Bowl Subdivision head coaches and 82 percent of Championship Subdivision head coaches back the plan, according to a USA Today story -- it seems likely the commissioners will seriously consider implementing the proposal for a three-year trial period that would begin this year.
Personally, I think this would create a yearly coup for Mack Brown and Co. They could sign all the kids who love UT then go out and get the OOS or undecided recruits. Obviously, all the big time programs would dominate recruiting wars, which is main reason I don't think it'll happen. What says the BON?

December?
Forget that. Make it in August. That way the kids who know where they want to go can sign before senior year gets underway, eliminating lots of distraction.
The same ol' shit
The early signing day would just be an option for the athletes. The february one would still stay as is; it just wouldn’t be as busy. There will still be a lot of big name recruits milking it for attention.
kind of a slippery slope dont you think
what if they’re injured or don’t qualify etc?
That's a risk the team must be willing to take
If you are going to take advantage of the early signing date, you must be willing to take on that risk. You have to be sure of a guy, which is something Mack seems to understand anyway.
I can see the positives for an August signing day
-locking guys in who are already certain
-help protect against last-minute defections
etc
Not really arguing against it just kind of playing devil’s advocate. If we bump it to december, who’s to stop a yet earlier signing date down the road?
Good question, but I do think it’d make sense to have an early signing period of some sort. I think the latest it should be moved up should be after a player’s team’s season is over, kind of like the NFL is with letting draftees participate in camp—they can’t until after their school’s academic term is over.
I think that’d be more than reasonable, but honestly I’d rather it be even earlier, like maybe a September 1st-30th early period, but then have a no-signing period from then up until after the season is over.

I can see the advantages, esp. for big programs
but what sort of rules are there for recruiting at younger and younger ages? in that case, the distractions are just deepened.
