Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

"What really happened? I asked Evans how much he pressed for independent verification of the party. He said he asked for the name of the hotel, and McFarland could not remember it. The reporter did not ask who invited the young man to the party, who accompanied him or who else might have witnessed the lurid events."

Some damn fine reporting by Mr. Evans right there, and Kashemeyia Adams comes off as her charming self with unspecified allegations lobbed at Texas fans in general. Apparently "it was submitted for a high school grade" is now enough corroboration for the New York Times to go with a story.

Its about time

Ive been waiting all day 40AS! Its about time you put your other life on hold and post something! (Tongue in cheek just in case)

Aside from the debacle that happened yesterday on the Tech post, this is quite entertaining stuff. Im glad to see another take on the matter. Im also glad we didnt get the guy. Im actually quite content with Howell instead.

What's interesting is:

Thayer claims to have gone through the English paper in detail, but JM said on 12/28:

“I didn’t know he had it,” McFarland said, referring to Times reporter Thayer Evans. “He came to my house one time when I dropped LSU (from consideration) just to observe. I think he got it then.”

One of them is lying.

Agree.

“We did the best we could under the circumstances” is neither an answer nor an excuse whatsoever. What circumstances? Prior to the release, no one knew this was coming. There was no one looking over their shoulder. They had an exclusive and plenty of leeway with time.

The McFarlands stonewalled. And obviously, no one on the NYT’s staff did anything extra to even verify any details about the party on their second shot, so this wasn’t even an autopsy of a story, not even any serious detective work. No mention of contacting the high school coach for any insight. While UT may not have been able to comment with regard to JM directly, they could have responded to such a story, which is an entity apart, particularly the allegations concerning what could be construed as NCAA violations at some level.

There is nothing to indicate the New York Times recognized the magnitude of the allegations made nor made the slightest effort to validate anything more than what the story said. The two prior mistakes mentioned in the overall story – the fictitious phone call from Sen. Kennedy to Gov. Paterson and the fake letter from the mayor of Paris – showed multiple levels of mistakes. So does the McFarland story, but it gets whitewashed as the best they could do under the circumstances, all of which were under their control. That is a piss poor excuse and completely insufficient. The Public Editor sinks to the level of the rest of his minions, which, I’m sure, is the best he can do under the circumstances.

it’s good to see this addressed in the public editor column.

while i am certainly not privy to the grey lady’s protocol when dealing with such issues my experience as a journalist working for a major daily newspaper is that a public rebuke like this usually involves a private one of somewhat greater scope. i would expect to see evan’s efforts will be curtailed for some time and when they resume the editing will be much more robust that than in the past. moreover, the sports department is probably going to be kept on a tighter leash in the future when it comes to such articles (although if this will address the anti-Texas bias many accuse the Times of harboring, i’ve no idea).

still, that doesn’t assauge the damage done by the original article and this rebuke does little to repair the damage it did by it’s cavalier approach to the situation. but it’s a start…

by kleph on Jan 18, 2009 11:23 AM CST reply actions

excellent insight, kleph

Good point on the private rebuke. I have my doubts on the “efforts will be curtailed” deal, as outlined below. I think the root of this problem is allowing an uncontrolled (theoretically investigative) reporter free rein. Obviously, that’s what happened here.

There are two other disconcerting points that come to mind in the JM story:

One is that entities like the NYT (they’re far from alone, but they may be No. 1 among the guilty) has a kind of template regarding big-time college athletics. They feel it’s “professionalism masquerading as amateur sport,” they avidly oppose the concept, they WANT TO BELIEVE it’s as dirty as this story makes it seem, and they look the other way ethically to validate those views.

The other issue concerns the writer: You get promoted in this business by breaking stories, getting there first, going where no reporter has gone. Editors and personnel in the hiring business see the writer of this kind of story as an intellect, a go-getter, somebody who will ask tough questions and challenge big issues. Reporters look for chances get their names attached to these kinds of stories because pay raises and better jobs often follow. To the reporter, the end justifies the means. And, as many of us have noted for a month, organizational responsibility before publishing the story is ignored.

I think there isn't a need to worry

people in the media take stabs at everyone, not just UT athletics. Let them. The damage will be repaired as we watch Jmac ride the pine next year, then go 0-3 the next 3 years as a starter against UT. The media may not believe in settling things on the field, but we sure as hell do.

by kriess on Jan 18, 2009 11:49 AM CST reply actions

Disagree

It’s fine for “people in the media” to “take stabs” in opinion pieces or op-eds, as the reader knows what he’s getting. It’s not OK to dress up a hit job as a legitimate story.

right I agree with you

And I mistakenly typed the wrong thought process. I meant Im used to the media taking stabs at UT. My point, though articulated very poorly, is that we’re fine no matter what they say. To hell with Thayer Evans. We know that none of that happened and the story was taken completely out of context. We all know that an English paper is just as credible of a source as Beergut’s pre-game analysis(…totally kidding)

It's not really about McFarland, or Texas...

I’m embarrassed for the NYT. Attempting to “explain” what happened does two things, IMO: First (and worst) it implies that Thayer Evans is a journalist…he’s not. He may be an entertainment reporter (passing along hearsay or gossip) but he’s not a journalist, let alone an investigative journalist. Second, it functions as a surrogate apology when a real apology is owed. NYT should ‘man up’ and take public action. Apologize and either fire Evans or, if he has talent that we haven’t seen yet, make him a Rick Reilly type writing human interest STORIES (profuse aplogies to Mr. Reilly).

Pittsburgh-Baltimore game...

just saw limas sweed laid out a former boomer sooner on the ravens before halftime. i think limas took the guy out of the game with that hit. made my day. :D

by iamjackburton on Jan 18, 2009 8:13 PM CST reply actions

yeah, but read the entire thread.

Not many Limas fans these days over on Blitzburgh’s blog, except for us obvious homers.

I understand, but still predict a Sweed TD catch FTW in Super Bowl XLIII.

That might shut up the doubters.
