Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

new commit

Rivals is reporting that Tevin Mims, (6-4, 240, DE)  of Round Rock Stony Point, has committed to UT. That swells the ranks to 20 commitments (this is the first in more than six months).

From Rivals: He was just a dominating presence off the edge this season and he got better and better with each passing week. He's not the most explosive edge guy you'll find off the edge, but he has a quick first step and he has the ability to use his athleticism to go around guys and the strength to go through them. He's been at his best in the playoffs, reminding of the rise that (UT commit) Alex Okafor made as a junior in 2007. This kid has a great body/frame that should allow him to add more weight and still maintain his athleticism.

……the staff has extended an offer to Texarkana WR Cobi Hamilton (6’3", 198).

Quick Question for Recruiting Gurus

Does the extension of these new offers indicate we are pessimistic about Kennard and Kirkpatrick?

by realmccoy on Jan 18, 2009 5:53 PM CST reply actions

since Kennard is a DE

possibly. I don’t think we have given up on Kirkpatrick though. He visits Austin in a few days.(jan 23). So does Jarvis Jones.

Still in the hunt

I saw somewhere that Mims might be spun down to DT, so this doesn’t impact Texas’ pursuit of Kennard. What’s the word on Hamilton?

possibly, but i think we have enough schollys for all of them. and i doubt kennard worries about tevin mims beating him out.

My guess...

UT just used the scholarship that they got back with JM going to chokelahoma.

My sense is that scholarship

availability is not the issue -- finding QUALITY players is. Coaches can get creative under the 85-scholarship limit to make room for athletes they feel will make a difference. Players in the program are sometimes “pushed out”, or convinced to transfer somewhere they can play, or placed on “injured” status which lets them keep benefits for a year or two while not playing and not counting against the scholarship limit.

Mims, evidently, was too good to pass up. His talent showed up late in his senior season, taking him from unranked by Rivals.com to the top 20 in the state. Pretty much unheard of.

he was like a 2 or 3 star if I remember correctly

right up until it became clear Texas was going to offer. Then boom, 4 stars like magic. In any case he looks promising and I trust Muschamp.

Mims a good pick up!!

Has anyone heard any news on Kennard???!?!?!?! I looked at Rivals and he has UT, Cal and SC high on his list!! So what’s the verdict!!!??!?!
