Unfortunately Gilbert isn't on there.  I don't think it makes sense for him to burn a season of eligibility his freshman year unless there's an emergency situation.  A true frosh QB should probably have one spring practice under his belt if he's going to try to beat out a true junior and redshirt junior for the backup job.

With Sherrod returning...

And JC apparently still playing QB, there’s no reason to play GG next year. I’m as excited as anyone to see him play, but a redshirt year can only help. Also, Mack and Greg don’t exactly have a great record of playing backup QB’s during the regular season and developing depth there. (Look at Snead a few years back and the lack of playing time for Sherrod as proof). No reason to take the RS off if he is isn’t going to get a decent number of snaps.

Anybody know if Tre Newton is coming back?

I think the fear in redshirting top prospects

is that you may only get 2 years out of them, ie. Sam Bradford if he would have gone to the pros like he should have. I think Mack has mentioned this in deciding whether to redshirt potentially great players. They don’t want to see them with only 2 years on the field. This happened with Jermichael Finley.

Now if he doesn’t redshirt next year he may not play much, but I see Mack’s point. If he was sure he would stay 4 years, I think he’s a no brainer redshirt.

very few texas players under mack go pro early, i dont think it’s a huge fear to get too little out of them.

Here's the link to the story

I knew I’d seen Mack say it somewhere..

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/011308dnspoutchanges.15aaafc2.html

“For whatever reason, more are leaving than ever before, and it will probably encourage us to not red-shirt as many,” Brown said. “We will probably play more guys in their first year anticipating that we will have more leave after their third year and that’s OK.”

I agree that Mack maybe a little skeptical

But, I think in this situation it would be best for Gilbert to be red shirt.

Colt will play a whole year and he won’t see the field. I don’t think there is a point to giving him 4 or 5 plays of mop duty. Would that really benefit him?

Redshirt QB

I think it’s always better to redshirt QB’s. Up through high school, you can get away with just talent and simple reads. At Texas, the playbook if is amazingly thick. A spring session and summer practice with the receivers would help a lot too. Hopefully he’ll get a lot of time still passing with the practice squad. Finley bolting for the NFL after one good year was dumb. Texas would’ve been a lot more vertical if we had a capable TE.

Basketball…march madness, baseball, spring football….all necessary items to rejuvenate the mind and body and develop rapport with the team, but I really can’t wait ’til football season kicks into full swing on our way to Pasadena!

The pride and winning tradition of The University of Texas will not be entrusted to the weak or the timid.

Okafor

I have seen him around campus already and the dude appears as if he physically is more than capable of coming in and contributing immediately. I would honestly say that the 6-5 and 232 he is listed at may be an understatement.

Saw Okafor playing basketball today

He is a big dude, but still looks like he can put on a ton more weight. He isn’t very good at basketball.

Vacarro plays bball a lot, too.

I think he had a knee problem this season but I have seen him the past three times I’ve gone to play.

Eh

It’s not like anybody does anything on court 3 but walk up and down the court and jack up threes.

Gilbert doesn't have 4 kids to take care of...

…Finley did.

I can see Gilbert sticking around for at least 4 if not all 5 years.
