If he doesn't want to go to UT, Hook'em!

Just read this on a past fan post and was wondering if anyone can elaborate on this.

Reported on Orangebloods that Kennard will go with USC

Did not want to make a post of it but it looks like he will go with USC tomorrow Morning.

Evidently he informed the coaching staff sometime in the last 24 hours.

Not exactly official yet, but things do not look good for Texas with this one.

As much as I want to see him in burnt orange, he wont be the the last talent to play D-end.

this kinda sucks but we probably wont be playing USC anytime soon unless its in a bowl game.

well..

Why do recruits wait so long to eventually commit to the school everyone thought he was going to commit to from the beginning? attention?

I’m sure it would be tough to compete on a loaded DE team like UT with a bum knee. He definitly will have to wait to play at UT or USC.

Maybe

Maybe he actually didn’t know where he wanted to go. With this being such a big decision, he might have wanted to take time and make an informed choice on where to attend college and prepare himself for his future career. Just because other people thought he would commit to a school does not mean that he had actually decided back then.

In some cases I would agree that the player just wants attention, but not always. Kennard seems to be one of those who do not seek the media (he is announcing at a school assembly, not on an ESPN news conference or anything like that).

The Case with Kennard

He really did not know. He seems to be a great kid and handled the situation very well. The night Pete Carroll was in his house, his brother called Orangebloods to inform them that Texas was not out of it and that he Tivoed the game.

But I do know what you mean, some kids just want attention. Kennard does not, he is not going on ESPN to pick his school he is using local media and is holding a press conference before school. Just a solid guy if you ask me. Here is some Video of him. I am not sure if it subscriber only or not.

I'm impressed....

……he lived up to his promise to notify all the involved coaching staffs.

Ever since he spent virtually all his time with USC recruits during the AA-Army game, I held no hope.

Kennard handled this process well.

You won’t see the fan uproar like you did when Evans wrote his hit pieces. Kennard, by all accounts, made his own decision, he notified all parties, he didn’t hold an ESPN/ Rivals hat dance. This is how I wish recruiting would go.

In the end he chose USC. While disappointed he didnt choose Texas, I cant hold it against him that he chose an equally prestigious program.

Good luck to him.

I'm a fan of his.

If I figured out this link thing correctly here’s a video of him talking about his 3 finalists:

He says some pretty interesting things and seems to have some perspective for an 18 year old kid. From what he says it sounds like Texas was a bit of a long shot from the out set but they did a great job with him despite not be a team out on the west coast. I think if he had grown up somewhere closer to Texas and it came down to an SC/Texas recruiting battle the horns might have come out on top. Whether if he ends up Bear, Trojan or Longhorn I think I’m going to find myself cheering for this kid.

I am still not sold yet.

But all things are looking USC.

Just hoping he is wearing a Texas Shirt Tomorrow!

from USC blog...
Tomorrow we will finally learn where Devon Kennard is going to go to school. From what I am reading it looks like its between USC and Cal with Texas a little further back.

Kennard was all but a lock for USC until Nick Holt went to UW and David Watson was not retained. Jethro Frankilin did go out to meet with Kennard but the big question will be is if that will be enough. I think it will be Cal becuse I think Kennard has a stronger relationship with Tedford than he does with Brown at UT and I’m not sure if all the moves on the SC coaching staff will play in our favor. WIn some lose some…this is part of the price you pay for success. Successful programs breed successful coaches so when Holt goes so do his relationships. Timing is everything…

Counting Down...

If you listen to his interview he seems to be down to Texas and Cal. When he said “either of those schools would be a good fit” or “Texas made me feel at home” or “I never thought I would be going to the BIG 12”, it gives me the feeling that he is seriously considering UT and we could be at the top. I guess we will see tomorrow and either way I wish the guy good luck on and off the field.

Yea, when he says

“I never thought I would be going to a Big 12 School”, It really makes you think.

We will know about 9 AM tomorrow. Press conference is at 7:45 MWT. I am hoping Texas but I really expect USC in this case.

Do we ever get the late announcements?

Not sure I’m even capable of getting my hopes up anymore.

Very True

I do expect that to change with Muschamp in the mix.

A lot of these late out of state recruits Mack loses out on because he did not recruit them to begin with. I think Muschamp will reach outside of Texas a lot more for some talent.

Muschamp is really the only reason we are even in the race for Kennard, Jones and Kirkpatrick if you ask me.

I'm with you

At this stage in the recruiting process I’m ready to move on to assessing the juniors that will be visiting (and possibly committing) next month. Don’t we usually get at least half of our next class class in February?

by BigTexBD on Jan 27, 2009 11:45 AM CST up reply actions

Not since....

….Tim Brewster left the coaching staff.

I do keep holding my breath, but I haven’t been very optimistic about landing any of the remaining top recruits.

Kennard has been a class act the whole way, so whatever his choice, I wish him the best.

I think McFarland himself acted pretty well, but allowed himself to be used by both his mother and Thayer Evans.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 27, 2009 6:38 AM CST reply actions

Disagree Completely

McFarland acted in a very classless manner. Writing untruths in a paper, then showing it to an “imbedded” reporter makes him a partner in libel. Then crying about the situation he created?

by realmccoy on Jan 27, 2009 7:22 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I saw that.

It sucks! Oh well. I wish him luck. I just wonder why it’s so hard for Mack Brown and Co. to get commitments from 5-star out-of-state prospects! I understand he wants kids that want to go to the Texas but still….we’re a top 5 program…we shouldn’t have this much trouble!

If he really dislike Texas, why would he come to our Junior day? Or is he just being an immature 17 year old who happens to have Lebron James syndrome?

Building a resume....

doesn’t require a lack of maturity. These young men all know of one another and they love to strut their stuff at various Jr. Days and summer camps. Jeffcoat almost certainly won’t be a Longhorn.
