Open Game Thread: Texas at Baylor
Texas Longhorns at Baylor Bears, Jan 27, 2009 8:00 PM CST
Steal a road win and Texas heads home with a chance to make a real charge at the Big 12 title. A loss wouldn't so much hurt as it would sting as a missed opportunity to make a move.

You don't see animals lifting weights and they are fucking strong... isometrics baby!
Knock, knock, knock on wood pre-game session.
The Craig Way intro to the game has dwelt at length on the Horns win streak. The interview with the Baylor assistant coach saw him bringing it up, too. Damn, that’s a lot of jinxing going on.
Baylor used to be a damn snake pit for the Horns. If anything, we’re just gettin’ even.
Everyone that comes on needs to knock on wood. We need it tonight.
Hook ’em.
Ha!
Turns out this game is on local TV here. Ch 51 KNWS here in Houston.

allergic to offense. Didn’t even look at the basket from eight feet.
Lots of clanked threes early.

LOL Hill completely misfires a jumper on the FT line
that might be why he’s not looking for his shot.

Hill gets the tip in
Let him just rebound and get tipins
by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:12 PM CST reply actions
is it me, or are more young post players mastering the hook shot?
I’m not seeing anything like Abdul Jabbar’s skyhook, but I do see a lot of post players out there these days with nice baby-hook shots.
6 all, under 16
Horns dominating glass but missing looks from three. Johnson on the bench with two early fouls the story so far.
Longhorns can’t just settle for jumpers; attack the rim and get rewarded at the line.

TRANSITION!
Dogus leads the mini fast break, leading to an open Abrams three. Terrible D by Baylor, allowing AJ to get open on the break.

Dang, Balbay travels
but I like that we’re running off of rebounds. Baylor won’t be able to stop that all day.

the color commentator has been demanding that James post-up since Dunn is guarding him.

can we get the ball to James please
by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:26 PM CST reply actions

that’s what’s going to kill us all game.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:27 PM CST reply actions
Connor nearly airballs a jumper
good god this is freaking ugly. Nobody wants to shoot. Mason not doing anything on offense. I wish he could drive.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:28 PM CST reply actions
Connor can't buy anything
and it’s starting to kill us because he keeps shooting.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:36 PM CST reply actions
Connor has sucked all year
It’s no longer surprising.
A stupid system that works exactly like it's supposed to is still a stupid system.
Connor is basically trying to impersonate Johnson with his jumper
and his failing.

but that’s not where I want him.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:39 PM CST reply actions

by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 8:40 PM CST up reply actions
His patience with Connor pretty much has to be infinite, because the next guy down is Clint.
And I’m not sure if Clint can even spell “basketball,” much less play it.
A stupid system that works exactly like it's supposed to is still a stupid system.
21 all, under 4
James finally hits a jumper but it was still a jumper and a contested one as well. Take the ball to the rim.
We will not win a jump shooting contest and that is what this game is turning into. Texas has yet to shoot a free throw. Those two early fouls on Gary loom large.

I don't get it
I just don’t get why Clint Chapman ever gets any court time. He’s fucking terrible.

James looks tired
He is shooting everything short and he has had a few shots blocked. Not like James

Ugly, Ugly Half by both teams
Horrible shooting and worse shot selection by Texas.
Texas is lucky to be leading at half. 27-24. If Baylor had shot halfway decently, we would be in trouble.
AJ only player to find the basket from the outside and Mason added two late buckets in the paint. I’m not sure why Texas settled for so many jumpers but it has to end. Get Gary back in the game, feed him and attack the Baylor D off the dribble is the second half game plan.
--AW--

34-30
Our D is too good for Baylor to blow us out. Only question is can we manufacture enough points to pull out a W?
by goingforthecorner on Jan 27, 2009 9:16 PM CST reply actions
I've had a bad feeling about this game since the start of the season
Baylor has some good scorers, I knew this would be a dog fight…
Still, its only a 4 point game… 34-30 16 minutes left.
34-30, under 16
We’re still fine. The D is still there. Baylor isn’t scoring at all in the halfcourt, only off turnovers or in run outs.
Texas needs to keep attacking the rim but actually finish as well. Sinking free throws would help too.

This is a conference road game against one of the tier one teams. This isn’t the Baylor we all remember from years ago. The Bears are good and will be in the NCAA tournament.
Texas is all tied with 12 minutes to go. I like our chances. Limit transition buckets and I think we can manufacture enough points to win.

Texas up 53-51, under 8
Horns starting to find a rhythm on offense. Connor and Ward with some makes from the line, AJ with a few jumpers, and even Balbay adding a nice drive.
Baylor is so streaky. They’re gonna keep jacking threes. If they make a few they’ll be up going into the final minutes. If not, Texas needs to take a little more time on offense a get a good shot.
