OU Picks Up A Juco WR Why Can't UT Get A TE
The Longhorns have a desperate need at TE but will Mack bring in someone from the Juco ranks to fill this position untill our young players develop.Hell no.
Don't even start that stuff about jucos can't qualify at UT because they have on both the basketball and baseball teams.
Irby may never play football again but we will sit on our butt and try to make a chicken out of chicken shinola.
This is the one area where Mack wears blinders any of us who were in the business world know you need quality personnel to be successful so you get the best you can find.
Greg Davis there is a juco TE out there who could make a difference get off your butt and find him.

Question:
What’s the worst way to convince Longhorns to agree to something?
Answer:
Use the Sooners as an example of why it’s ok.

they have commitments from the #1 and #2 TE in Texas… what more do you want? the coaching staff can do whatever it damn well pleases if it can reel off a 12-1 season in a down year without a real TE. relax, the sky is not falling.

To be completely honest
There are tons of reasons. For one, Texas doesnt sign a bunch of JUCO players anyway. Also, players don’t grow on trees. It’s hard to find a player with a portion of his college career already gone that is ready to step up to Texas.

One year we had an unexpected TE leave early
Then we lost another TE for the year before the season began, then we lost another for the year in the third game.
What position can go more than three deep and be fine?
With Irby hopefully coming back, Grant probably sliding over to TE, and Marshall back, not to mention adding Trey Graham and Barrett Matthews, what more do you want?

Right Idea - Wrong Position
Get the largest, meanest, DT in the JUCO ranks.

Don't Get Me Wrong...........
I believe that it’s best to have the players here for four years.Mack has built up a feeling of family on the team and it serves us well.
That said it seems that for what ever reason we sometimes get real thin at one position. As mentioned above DT is an example.
After Irby went down we had no one step up at the position and as good as Graham and Matthews are they are not ready to help us much next year.
All I’m asking is that we fill a position of need from a readily avaiable source. There is a guy, like the ends from Iowa last year and Missouri this year, he is not your prototypical TE but he would sure be a valuable weapon for Colt to have.

But the fact you dont seem to get
is that there are plenty good TEs coming next year, we just happened to have two good TEs go down with season ending injuries, both of whom will be back next year.

Texas has fit its needs quite well in this recruiting class
2 TE
2 DT
4 DE (One or two may move inside)
The TE position this season was kind of weird. We had a sophomore leave to turn pro, then we had another stud go down with a season ending injury, it was almost like it was not meant to be.
We have DTs that will step up and expect Lamaar Houston to have a very good year. And the DE spot has a few good players with Eddie Jones and Sam Ocho.
We will be alright.

Who is this Sam Ocho you speak of?
Is he a distant cousin of Chad Ocho Cinco?
I’m excited about Acho, though. If he’s not one of PB’s “My Guys” for the ’09 season, color me surprised.

Don't give up on our TE's...
…We’ve recruited a couple of shitheads.
But, don’t give up on Marshall..he was doing very well until he got hurt, and another year in the weight room to add to his Redshirt Freshman year, and he’ll be much stronger. DJ Grant may prove to be effective in that role and Irby will be back if not this year, next year.

JUCOs are stopgaps, not solutions
if you can avoid going that route, I think you are better off

We has four TEs on te roster. We lost three pass catching TEs to injury. That left us with only Ullman who was primarily a blocker. Greg Smith was moved over from his O-line position. Look for Marshall and Harris at least to be healthy next season.
We have recruits Barrett Matthews and Trey Graham in this class. They are rated the #3 and #8 TEs in the country by ESPN and Matthews is on the top 150 list.
You want a stop gap solution when none is needed. If you are going to post on a blog at least attempt to have some knowledge of your subject.

We will be fine,
not only at the TE position but the defensive line positions as well. We still have kids that were behind the starters and kids that also red-shirted. Just remember that schools like Texas, tOSU and USC do not rebuild they reload. We have plenty of bullets in the clip to fill the holes. Let the coaching staff do what they do. Get a kid in evaluate and put the kid where he will help the team best. We will do what we do best. Come early, drink beer and party on 6ht street.

71 If you are going to critize at least back it up with something
We were not fine last yearand Irby may not play again. All our TEs that played after Irby went down contributed little or nothing.Thomas and Scaiffe were two of the best to come through the 40 acres and they contributed very little as freshmen. So we will be lucky to get any help from the two frosh.TEs.What were Marshall’s stats last year?
How many catches did the TEs have and for how many yards?Mack’s site doesn’t have that info and we will probably have to wait on the media guide to find out.
Greg Davis’ game plan for OU was brilliant as thier LBs couldn’t cover Shipley and Venebals couldn’t make the adjustments needed to stop him.
I hope I’m wrong but to expect the same guys who didn’t get the job done last year to do it this year may be wishful thinking.
Mack has done some great coaching by changeing some players from their natural position of need.He took a TE Tubbs and moved him into the defensive line and now he plays for the Seahawks. He moved Melton from RB to DE with good results and there have been others.Let’s hope he can do it at TE.

This is ridiculous.
You do know that Bo was the starter as a junoir while Dave was a youngin right? Do you see how its ridiculous to bring up his freshman stats? And when Bo was a Freshman? Mike Jones started as a Junior. Irby was supposed to follow the same route, with Jmike being a junior this past year.
We didn’t have a catching tight end this year, because we lost three unexpectedly. There are no stats, wait for it, because there were no players. Its like asking how many rushing yards our Fullback had this year. We didn’t have one, so guess what, there’s no stats. It doesn’t prove your point one bit. I don’t see you clamoring for us to go snag a JUCO Fullback, or fourth string QB, or backup punter. We don’t have one of any of those, and therefore none got any stats, but we were still just fine.
This is ridiculous. I know I already said that, but it bears repeating. Name one position, ANY position where theres a single starter that can survive two season ending injuries and an unexpected early graduation.
And we did do fine last year, if not for a terrible first half of football brought on by nearly succeeding the hardest stretch of football seen in 60 years, we would have been in the national championship game with a chance to go for a record only Utah could dream of. Hell we went 12-1 against a strong schedule, what constitutes as fine for you? Perfection? A championship? I hate to break it to you, but that’s a high expectation that you will fall short of far more than obtain, you know we only have 4 in well over 100 years right? In a year where we were picked as low as fourth in our own division, to finish in the top 5 in the nation is at the very least what I would call “doing fine.”
And to next year, that is also ridiculous. Or are you expecting Marshall and Irby to be injured again for an entire year? Is DJ Grant graduating early? Are Matthews and Graham going to refuse to burn their redshirts?
Calm down dude, there is no smoke, and there is no fire. Last year was an anomaly that would happen to ANY program, at nearly ANY position. How the staff handled it was amazing in my opinion. If at the beginning of the year you asked people how Texas would do without any threat at TE, what do you think the record guesses would have been? They were already projecting us to lose 3 games for crying out loud.
And the last thing in the world we need to to Stoop(s) down to taking Juco players.
Finally, you don’t have to wait for any media guide, you can look up stats instantly whenever you want. Its the age of the internet, and information waits for no man or publisher. Here is a stat for you to chew on. For as bad as the situation was at TE this year, we had more TE touchdowns this year than we did last year, and were only one short of how many we got in 2006 (Peter Ullman caught the one that made the difference in 2006 by the way).

Why don't you actuall y read my post
I didn’t say we were fine last year. Irby went down and Harris and Marshall were already hurt. Marshall missed the whole year and Harris was able to make only very occassional apperances lte in the season. The guys didn’t get the job done because they were injured and couldn’t play. You might want to at least give somebody a chance before you decide to throw them in the garbage.

Colt Brennan
Was a QB at CU before he drunkenly wandered into a co-ed’s room and started fondling her. Is this the kind of athlete you want at UT?
