Under Armour All-America Game Open Thread
It's finally here. The event you've waited your whole weekend for. An interesting chance to see Garrett Gilbert, Russell Shepard and Matt Barkley all on the same field (not likely at the same time though).
ESPN, 7 PM central. Rosters here. Cool story on the Horn commits is here. Future Longhorns are:
Garrett Gilbert -- QB
Thomas Ashcraft -- OL
Paden Kelly -- OL
Barrett Matthews -- TE
Mason Walters -- OL

Welllll….I’m sure by the end of the night they will know who the heck Garret Gilbert is… that’s just my opinion though!
i dont really think the end of the night is really the goal. Texas fans know that there is a storm coming in the likes of which likely havent been seen before.
if tonight were the apex of gilbert’s career, it would be a sad solstice upon us. Gilbert will encompass so much more than what the other athletes will show tonight. under the lights of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium there is about to be a knew era upon us and none will be able to deny the sovereignty that is approaching.

Looks like the play that USC was running in the Rose Bowl.

It will be interesting
to see when Gilbert plays if they go under center like they are with Barkley.. I can’t imagine that Gilbert was ever under center at LT.
don't think they will
I watched a little of the practices on ESPNU and everything I saw on the black team they were in shotgun…
SSSHHHHH!!!!!!!

walters
looks big and athletic. also based on some interviews I saw of him he seems like a pretty smart kid as well.
I saw that too, Walters really handled it well
You expect it from Gilbert with all the attention he has had

LB Jelani Jenkins
Wheaton (Md.) Good Counsel
At only 16, Jenkins has one of the best linebacker builds on either squad. He is already developed but stil sleek and athletic. He is not as quick on his reads as some of the White linebackers but once he finds the ball he is downhill and physical. At the point of contact, Jenkins is explosive and he has the athleticism and size to make plays on every level of the defense.

your prototype TE's
nowadays are at least 6’5. however, mack brown has a history of TE’s being successful dating back to alge crumpler… he, scaife, david thomas were all in that 6’3 range. j-mike was more of the prototypical pro prospect at TE

and trusts his legs WAY too much

I've been reading a lot about his on field prowess....
But what kind of person is he off the field? What I like most about Colt is that he is the penultimate college role model, a guy you hope your kids look up to.

From what I've seen he's rather withheld and quiet
But then again, all I have to go by is the same interviews everyone else can see. Anyones guess at this point
Plus he has that Colt-esque accent.
Well, a southern draw at least.

What better name and accent for a Texas Quarterback then Colt McCoy..
.Garret has a great Coach to mentor under
I dunno...
He could be named Augustus (Gus) McCray and speak like Boo Weekley – that’d make for high comedy
if were lucky
GG will finish this half AND start the next one.
In Dick Vitale speak:
This kid is the best b-ball player ever, baby! I would have his child if it was physically possible! There is no way this kid won’t be picked number one overall and I guarantee he will lead them to a championship!! I love this kid, he does everything baby!!!
What? oh, the lost?….nevermind…baby.

good for brewster
good to see he’s buildinga pretty strong class up at Minnesota. I wish him all the best
1 series?
did i fall asleep or did gilbert only get 1 series in the first half?
Rotation.
All 3 Black team QBs got one series. Then they started the rotation again, giving each QB 2 series in a row. GG is 3rd in the rotation and this last series of the half is Nunes’ second series in his second set. I may have said that confusing, but GG will start the 2nd half.
by HornPossessed on Jan 4, 2009 8:38 PM CST up reply actions
GG
Maybe i have a bias… shouldn’t Gilbert play a little more? Seems to be the only one who sparked the offense
RS
I dont think he will be a QB… hes too small, very Pat White (which is all legs no arm) actually Pat White was like 3 or 4 inches taller i think. i ahte to say it but Barkley looked like the next “golden boy” now we will have to hear about him and his missionary work like tebow for 3 years
I am kind of glad he didn't
commit to Texas. Seem’s very immature

the sooner boys look good, hopefully they can keep their grades up, learn their plays, and still find time to have a part time job at the car wash

barett should have come back, it wouldhhave been borken up
mouth piece
does it serve a function when wedged in the face mask?
I don't think there is any rotation on the O-Line...so it stays at 3/5 Texas players.
But Barrett Matthews was finally on the field!
by HornPossessed on Jan 4, 2009 9:13 PM CST up reply actions
A couple of nice 3rd down throws.
They better not stick with the damn rotation, or this will be his last drive.
they'll have a write up on him tomorrow I'm sure.
sucks that they ignored gilbert driving them down the field but eventually it will be noted
RS
hey lets no be to negative on the kid
hey is and amazing dual threat QB
He'll develop much like Pat White.
So he’ll be a 75% run, 25% pass kind of guy.
by HornPossessed on Jan 4, 2009 9:14 PM CST up reply actions
That wasn't the fault of GG.
In these types of games, receivers run simplistic routes making it very easy on the defenders and they can jump routes. It’s been happening this whole game.
by HornPossessed on Jan 4, 2009 9:16 PM CST up reply actions
Pick is..
not all his fault. No room to run and no open reciever. Should havce done something else though
he’s the only player who has lead an offensive series, just struggled a bit in the redzone.

big XII crew calling the game?
holy aggregious missed holding call, batman
Is the left tackle on white going to Tech?
That was a hell of a hold right there
HOLY COW
did that O-lineman sign with Texas Tech…that was an awesome hold
This is awful officiating
at least this series.
How are you going to let a false start play continue on? A player gets hurt on that play that should have never happened and that official will have questions to answer.
lmao
nice way to call the game 10 seconds late
wait what the fuck? i thought GG was going to get 2 offensive series? i mean i’m ok with a 1 play series for RS… as long as GG gets a real series.
by Displaced Longhorn on Jan 4, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions
To think all he wanted was a chance at QB at UT
GG would have made him transfer just like Colt did Jevan.
i would say
it’s either been better offense all around or worse defense. can’t really tell which. calibar of players equal
more shepard
at the moment it’s disappointing but really – all this means is gilbert probably won’t get injured
fuck this, and russell shephard is back out there. did i miss a series by GG?

Speaking of commitments..
what do yall think about the chances of Kennard and Kirkpatrick coming to the 40 acres?
wonder how much that Bama loss will affect Dre’s decision.
aaaand berry fumbles the ball and loses it, great.

I'm confused...Aren't they trying to rotate the game between 3 QBs evenly?
Matt Barkley and RS have both played half (maybe more) of the snaps their offenses have taken. That’s not fair to the players to give certain players more time because ESPN demanded it by making them their players to watch…
Take a guess which QB comes out for the black squad.
I say GG.
" Pain is weakness leaving the body." - U.S.M.C
nunes
as much as it feels like gg has been shorted i bet he’s gotten even fewer
true, but nunes hasn’t done shit at all. RS has some TDs he didnt do much for. GG has been the only QB to drive down the field.

nunes, even though GG deserves it.

ESPN's USC/SEC hard-on has never been clearly than in this game.
They never even watched the game unless there was Barkley or RS in at QB.
that was the least amount of water ever thrown on a winning coach

gatorade shower...
what if PSU had beaten USC, does a player sneak up to the booth and dump gatorade all over JoPa and potentially give him a heart attack? what is the proper course of action there?
i don’t know but it was a fantastic throw to end the game.

Final throughts:
ESPN’s USC/SEC chubby kept me from enjoying GG, the Under Armour game isn’t managed like a real game, and RS is like 6 years old.
i didn’t think it was so bad, the usc talk. barkley was great and i completly missed the usc commitment. as far as the SEC.. fuckin every commitment was comign from guys going to SEC schools, you gotta takl about ’em.

And more....
Serious man-crush on Barkley and nothing but a bash on one of our TE recruits:
Matthews was a player we were very excited to see coming into the week. We knew he lacked ideal height for the tight end position and he was about what we thought he would be when he arrived size wise. He did show good speed during the week and did a nice job of blocking when called upon. He did display some rawness though in his route running ability and despite some good speed had some trouble creating separation. The Texas commit also had some drops and the week did not feature any of the big plays we had hoped to see from him. The No. 2 ranked tight end tended to blend in this week while the No. 1 rated tight end Morrell Presley had an excellent week. We still believe Matthews is a fine tight end, but the gap between him and Presley is apparently wider.
Still a Blaine Irby fan
