It's Official John Chiles' Sole Position Will Be QB
Don't look for John Chiles to be playing any other position but quarterback in the future. His days as a WRs or RB are over.
"John is fully committed to being a quarterback, has really worked hard and is getting better every day," Brown said. "He will not be playing other positions and will focus solely on being a quarterback.
He's getting good reps in practice and putting in extra time afterwards". His coaches say they have seen rapid improvement since mid-season.He has been more accurate with his passes. It is obvious that Davis and Applewhite have been working with him during the bowl preparation.

if texas breaks away from osu tomorrow i hope he gets a couple good series in.. i mean really, the kid has 13 passes on the year. we need to see more. and i hope he comes into his own and becomes the QB he hopes he becomes, cause garrett gilbert is going to be riding his heels soon enough.

And don't forget Sherrod Harris
If he doesn’t transfer after this season, there’s more than enough depth to allow GG to redshirt.
Still a Blaine Irby fan

I don't think there's any doubt GG redshirts next year with this news

unless it’s clear that he’s far and away better than chiles, then there is no reason for him not to redshirt next year. colt will be the starter, chiles the backup, and gilbert we’ll save a year of his eligibility.

That's awesome
I think a lot of horn fans are a bit guilty of expecting too much too soon out of Chiles at the qb position considering he didn’t even play it full time. I think the kid is immensely talented and I know a lot of people are expecting Gilbert to step in as a freshman and immediately start winning heismans and national championships but I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts this means Chiles is going to be the starter the year after next and that’s exciting to me.

I’m looking forward to the 2010 pre-season battle for the QB job. I think I’ll be happy no matter who wins it. I’ll feel bad if neither Chiles nor Harris ever gets a chance to start at Texas, though.

The time for him to change roles was at the beginning of this season
And its a shame that he didn’t. Well, I mean based on his hype its a shame. I haven’t seen him run that impressively against second stringers to have me clamoring for what could have been, and thank goodness we abandoned the terrible Q package, lets hope that doesn’t resurface next year.
Watching GG play, and realizing he will get a full year under Greg and Major before he competes for the starting job, makes me think Chiles’ career at Texas is going to be largely unmemorable. Maybe Chiles gets the start in 2010, but even at that best case scenario, a one year starter?
Thanks for trying, I would have rather seen him working up a rapport with Colt all this year to help fill in for Quan next year, and Shipley in 2010. Oh well, its not the first time a highly hyped kid ends up doing basically nothing, I can’t get too broken up about it.

i think if he eventually does next to nothing at texas, it will be his own fault and not the staff’s. he wanted to play QB…. he insisted on playing QB…. and now he’s in a situation where he cannot change his mind because he doesn’t have the time.
i have a feeling russell shepard wasn’t lied to directly because of this kid, the staff think they fit a similar mold and don’t want him wasting his time, especially when they picked up such a great QB in GG.

I dont disagree
If it was his call, then he is the one to blame. And if he rides the pine all next year too, which hopefully he will in any and all meaningful minutes of the year, then that sounds like a waste of hype to me.

I really wish we had been able to see Sherrod play this year.
In the past few spring games, he has been very sharp and he was definitely a more polished passer than Chiles.

I do wonder about 2010. What are the odds Chiles transfers and redshirts in 2010 if he doesn’t like the way things are looking in the pre-season position battle?

Transferring with one year of elegibility left?

Yeah, he’d redshirt for a season, then play for a season. It’d be better than sitting for a season, no?

uh..
It’d be better than sitting for a season
I don’t know if you know how redshirting works..lol

I do. I redshirted myself. But I also know that he could play immediately at an FCS school.
Also, when I say “better than sitting for a season,” I mean “just” in the sense that it’s ALL he would do if he were to not win the starting QB job in the 2010 pre-season. He would just sit and watch Gilbert or Harris start, and then Chiles’ college career would be over. If he transferred to another FBS school, sure, he’d sit, but then he’d possibly get to play in 2011 after redshirting 2010. This is what Sam Keller did when he left ASU.

Look, if that was an attempt at a joke, it wasn’t a very good one. Neither was the other one supposedly slain at my hands. In either case, it appeared the guy didn’t understand what I was saying, so I clarified.

I think the "lol" at the end
is a clue that he is kidding
by Wells on Jan 6, 2009 12:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Often “lol” isn’t kidding. For example, it can be amusement if one thinks another person doesn’t understand how a redshirt works.

I guess I don't understand
how lol works.

I wouldn't......
…..expect to get any more recruits from Mansfield Summit HS.
Chiles could transfer and use his RS while he sits. He’d have 2 years of eligibility remaining. He’s been kidding himself.

Agree
Seems it would be in Chiles’ best interests to transfer. Texas wouldn’t be too hurt, as they’ve got a capable backup in Sherrod Harris for the next two years. And Chiles starts only if he can beat out a (possible) redshirted Garrett Gilbert, who is tailor made for the current Texas O.
I suppose there’s always the possibility that Chiles pulls off a DJ Shockley type year in 2010.
Also worth noting…amazing how Tressel can implement the 2 QB package in roughly 60 days, whereas Mack and GD have been unable to pull it off for about 2 years now.

The Q
Big difference here. The pocket passer is the second guy brought in, while the Dual Threat *TM guy went out to play WR.
Tressel never did anything as foolish as line Boeckman out as a WR.
Its also possible that Pryor is not only a better runner than Chiles, but a better receiver as well.
Lastly, I dont know about you, I was glad every time Boeckman came in for most of the game. His line through the first three quarters was 1 for 4 for 14 yards. Its not like the package was tearing it up, until they found some success at the end of the game.

what are you expecting out of him?
he doesn’t get to play in the critical moments because we have a heisman calibar quarterback in front of him. Occasionally he pulls clean up duty in blow outs and he is asked almost exclusively to run the ball or hand it off. When, exactly, is he supposed to show you something? he completed a long touchdown to buckner against mizzou and a nice td against rice to kirkendoll so if nothing else you could say maybe he has a nice rapport with some of the young receivers. I don’t get all of the negativity surrounding him.
would you prefer he start chucking the ball all over the field in the 4th quarter with UT up 30 points?
by andmyster on Jan 6, 2009 1:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ditto on the fumbles
Your assumption is that I am referencing his passing. i completely ignore the passing side since we haven’t seen it (maybe there’s a reason why). The real question is what have you seen that merits great anticipation? He hasn’t even shown an ability to run well or consistently against the 2nd or 3rd teams during blow outs. He cant make ANYONE miss or shed a tackle. He doesn’t look quick nor very elusive. I have no expectations of him since he has given me no reason to have any. I saw Shepard for 4 plays in the UA game and it is obvious that kid can at least run.
BTW, when will he play? If Gilbert isn’t playing as a redshirt freshman, that probably isn’t a good sign for UT. If i were Chiles, I would swallow my pride and get on the field someway….

Ive seen and talked to John Chiles around campus, he is always hanging out and joking with his friends, I dont think he is hoping to make it as a big time NFL star, but just enjoying UT life one day at a time. I think he realizes that with colt behind the reins, pro football is not an option for him.
So what im trying to get at is, hes just enjoying his time at UT, not expecting anything huge.
