How Soon We Forget...

Tim Tebow is awesome - let's just get that out of the way.

I really admire the guy.  Makes me wonder what the hell I was doing at 21 (most likely, spending too many nights playing Quarters in the washroom with my buds...).

But I just don't get it - there's been all this talk in the last 24 hours about Tebow being the Greatest College Football Player in History.  And not one time -  ONE TIME!  Did I hear anyone mention Vince Young.

Ok, so maybe I'm somewhat biased, but I just don't see how you can watch that 2006 Rose Bowl tape and tell me you've seen anyone better than VY was on that day.

And it's not just that one day of course (preaching to the choir here) - there's  2 1/2 years of evidence behind that!

Props to Tebow - hell of a player - fantastic leader - even better person - he just isn't better than Vince Young.

Funny how as time moves on, "the past" gets closer and closer each day - I used to think 15-20 years ago was "the past"...nowadays, I guess 3 years qualifies...

I think part of it is the recent Struggle of Vince in the NFL

People have forgotten what he did that night of Jan. 4th.

But I have to say I agree with you!

Let's also note here that everyone says Tebow 'wills' his team to victory...

The SEC championship game against Alabama was the first time in his career he has led a 4th quarter comeback…

VY is 10x the player Tebow is.

Mark May on ESPN

Today he was gushing about Tebow as the greatest college football player ever. We need to send him the DVDs of the 05 and 06 Rose Bowls and ask could Tebow ever have gotten close to this kind of performance? Let’s see, Tebow was demolished in last year’s bowl and this year he threw two picks and got bailed out by his defense, flat in the front play calling by OU in the red zone, and Percy Harvin.

I have to bail out May on this one

From what I saw, he DENIED that Tebow was the greatest ever, placing him probably in the Top 15. He said that IF Tebow won another Heisman or another MNC next season, then you can put him up there in the Top 5 and legitimately argue that he’s the greatest player, but now you can’t.

one thing

at least one article I read differentiated it by proclaiming him the “greatest” but far from the “best” – I still disagree but I find that to be a little less nauseating

Its difficult to blame Florida fans

for believing that Tebow is greater than VY, when a great number from our fanbase (OUR FANBASE!!) has already forgotten VInce’s excellence and proclaimed Colt McCoy the best Longhorn ever.

The “here/now” fallacy is seductive; people seem to need to believe that whatever is happing now is greater than anything that has happened before or will ever happen again.

Give it 10 years, and Vince will work his way back up the list.

Good Points

I would agree that once the excitement subsides, there may be more rational thought in this area…

It’s interesting to note that the 2006 Rose Bowl was BY FAR the most requested game out of about 30 that ESPN listed on it’s “12 Bowls of Christmas”…

Tebow will be a hell of a coach...

He will not be as successful in the NFL as he will be on the sideline with a clipboard…perhaps destined for college coaching like Major.

Vince's excellence?

Yes he did show brilliance at times, but in his three years he lost to OU twice and had to defeat them to get to the title game in his third. Colt is a more rounded and humble player than “look at me girls” Vince ever was.

Colt won his first year with a great team around him

But of course, Colt gets due respect. It should be noted, however, that Vince never lost to A&M. Or Tech.

We all love Colt, and you won’t find a bigger Colt supporter than me because he came from essentially my hometown. However, we who watched the both of them know who was the more special college player. Vince was something else.

Also love Colt...

but VY was like Earl – just a force of nature…

suffice it to say that if I had to choose up for a college football game and my life was at stake, and I could take anyone I’d ever seen at their college peak… my quarterback would be Vince Young, and my running back would be Earl Campbell… and I’d feel pretty comfortable no matter who was my opposition….

of course, my other RB would be OJ Simpson, so I don’t know where that would fit in…

oh, and I bet...

that in his heart of hearts, if you gave Colt the same scenario, I bet he’d pick Vince too… guy’s pretty smart. And if you asked Tebow, I bet God would tell him to take Vince as well… God’s honest that way.

I'm right there with you elusive....

I grew up 20 minutes from Colt and think he’s great and is definitely an overachiever, but VY is VY. However, if Colt wins an NC next year, we should look at this conversation again…

Interesting name...

Not the runningback that played at Abilene High, surely, who helped take the Eagles to the playoffs for the first time in 40 years? Haha.

VY

Single-handedly beat the “Greatest College Football team of all time”…
Took a great recruiter and made him a legend…
Made a mediocre OC look like a genius…

I love Colt and have respect for Tebow, but as Sneezy Beltran said…VY is VY.

I will give you one thing

VY is better than Tebow. Or at least I like him better. However, USC the “greatest of all time” Poo! Spoken like a true Longhorn. Mack a Legend. Maybe in your mind. Not outside of the state of Texas I can assure you. After he’s won a few more than 1 Big 12 titles, then maybe we’ll talk more about the legend stuff. I still contend that Colt McCoy is the real deal and Vince was more fluff. He just had longer legs. I have the utmost respect for CM and I can assure you that I am not a Longhorn fan. Actually I have a lot of respect for the Longhorn team as well, including their Coach. That’s more than I can possibly say for most of the fans on this blog. So forgive me if I take a well deserved shot at ya once in a while.;>)

He just had longer legs?

That is all you’ve got? Check the game film man. That is idiotic.

And Mack IS a legend in Austin and for BON’ers all over the place…. just like DKR….. and that is enough.

And don’t worry about the shots, when you are as good as we are, you get used to people doing that.

But as for the respect thing, I am not a blogging expert, but this sight in among the most respectful I have been on. There are idiots out there with computers wearing orange of course, but the guys who are posting here a lot….and who have been here a while… pretty upstanding and generally respectful people with very few exceptions. I don’t think expression of rivaalry are disrespectful. Expressions like…Its 9:33 CST and OU still sucks.

VY is way better than Tebow

Tebow is too dramatic. He is a great college QB. VY wouldn’t lose a bowl game to a crappy Michigan team…..EVER!

by Longhorns84 on Jan 10, 2009 11:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Tebow overrated

Tebow couldn’t carry VY’s jock. Everyone is giving Tebow credit for 2 natl championships when he didn’t even start 2 years ago. He also lost a buttload of games last year that everyone seems to forget. Also, why does he get to constantly talk about how great he is just because he is a religious, nice guy? I was rooting for Florida to win the MNC until the announcers had that suckfest for Tebow. They had me rooting for OU by the third quarter.

by cmull on Jan 11, 2009 6:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The goalposts keep moving when it comes to Tebow love. If he wills them to win, then why didn’t he do it a little more often as a sophomore, when they lost four games? He’s an Urban Meyer quarterback, which is one of the few things iffier than a Jeff Tedford quarterback.

It wasn't a crappy Michigan team last year..

Everyone was healthy in the bowl game last year. Michigan beat Florida on talent…in their own backyard. Did you even watch the game?
